Real Games that Count

It all begins on Sunday, we finally get to see Ndamukong Suh play in a real game for the Dolphins. We finally get to see the starters play a full game and tell for ourselves if the improvements we’ve heard about are real. I have two categories of players at the moment – Impressed and Almost Impressed.

Impressed

Ndamukong Suh – surprise surprise. The glimpses we have seen look awesome and he hasn’t even had his “real” game day face on. His leadership appears to be a guiding force for our team and he says things like, “I don’t want us to be good in spurts, we need to be great all the time” (paraphrased).

Ryan Tannehill – You look more in control, the ball is coming out quick and the best part of the season starting is that you don’t have to run away from our own front four anymore. Big year expected.

Cam Wake – poised to have perhaps his best season due to some new guy lined up next to him, Wake looks in incredible shape and should be a lethal force this year.

Jarvis Landry – love his approach, he looks faster. He’s a budding star in the NFL. Have a big year Juice.

Rashad Jones – Will feast in this D, looked great in the pre-season. Pro Bowl year?

Jamil Douglas – he said he was coming in to win a starting job – and he did! I don’t recall Thomas or Turner saying as much when they got here.

Brent Grimes – licking his chops, waiting for rushed and errant throws as the front four pressure makes QB’s make bad decisions.

Dion Sims – took the next step it would appear, the coaches are very pleased with where he is and its time for this young player to go out and make a name for himself.

Earl Mitchell – He looks so powerful and quick, playing next to that new guy he will make our D very stout up front.

Lamar Miller –  I would expect at least another thousand yards, he should be a lot of fun to watch this year as he’s used more in the passing game but getting more carries than a year ago.

These are the guys I saw a lot from in the brief amount of time they have played thus far, they are essentially the core of the team as they go so go the Dolphins.

A number of others are close and given the opportunity they have now should be the difference between us being a decent team and a really good team.

Almost Impressed

Olivier Vernon –  he really belongs on the Impressed list but coming from the blindside I need to see the sack numbers increase. He plays active, violent football.

Ja’Wuan James –  another one who really belongs above but this second year man has another gear, we’re fixin’ to see it. James and Douglas on the right might be a couple of bulldozers.

Jordan Phillips – moved Guards and Centers backwards like they were on skates in the pre- season. As the mentee of the new guy, expectations are high for this big, powerful man.

Mike Pouncey – back in the saddle although he had an injury scare. Lead this line and win games, Tannehill can’t be on the ground as much as he has been in previous seasons. Drive the truck.

Walt Aikens – stepped in and never relinquished the job after Delmas went down. Keep it up young man, you play on a stellar D there should be balls to pick.

Greg Jennings – everything you hear is positive. He’s working with our young receivers, he looks good  himself and his winning attitude is rubbing off.

Jelani Jenkins – perhaps a Pro Bowl year for this tackling machine. Would like to see more turnovers and negative plays from him.

Damien Williams – looks even better this year as a second year man. Expected to be a large contributor to the O this year and that’s a good thing.

Terrence Fede – Is Davie the Frankenstein laboratory? Are we building a beast? He should be a regular rotational player and a big part of what we do on Defense.

Dallas Thomas – won a starting job and has received outstanding reviews from the coaches. Hold down the LG spot and help this O go.

Obviously I didn’t list everyone, those are the guys that have earned a spot on the team and we hope to see big things from all of them.

A big “way to go kid” goes out to Matt Darr and Andrew Franks taking spots away from vets. No small feet (lol) out-kicking Fields that’s for sure. Thanks for the deep kickoffs Franks.

Now go pound the Redskins

Howie wants to do a weekly piece centered around your predictions, he likes when people give a preview of what they expect to happen, he’ll then use those to put together an article that we will likely run on Saturday.

Good read son – I was already licking my chops (like our D Line) but that’s got me salivating even more! Can’t wait for Sunday. Shame about the stinking Pats last night.
I’m thinking the first game won’t be a HUGE scoring game due to rust on both teams.

      27-16 Miami

PS Been on my hols and getting caught up with news – hope the op went well Lee – thinking of Tim, Try and everyone else who’s going through tough times. Let’s hope Tanny and the rest of the Dolphins bring a smile to all our faces by playing a complete complimentary game. Go Fins.

I thought of this comparison. The current Patsies are = to the Dolphins in the Shula years and this current Dolphin team(although site unseen) is comparable to the Bills teams of the 90’s. Loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and looking to take away what you have.

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Revised preview for Howie on my 24-23 prediction
Dolphins go up 24-0 int he first 6 minutes of the game an 2 Tanny TD passes, a R. Jones In return.
They control the game from the inception
Miller has 100 yards on the ground before the half which helps set up a FG for the Dolphins

Suh and Wake eat Kirk Cousins before the half is over – the refs make up rule and award Redskins 10 points for QB eating

Dolphins starters are benched in 2nd half
Philbin challenges a Dolphins TD and the officials give the TD to the Redskins b/c why not and they don;t like the look of Philbin with his smug red flag

    Oh no, its 24-17 now
Colt McCoy is sacked 13 more times in 2nd half
on final sack, with .06 to go he is sacked int he endzone
official with vision disability thinks its the redskins endzone and awards TF to redskins
    Now its 24-23
    Fede blocks extra point

Tanny does a back flip to QB kneel to run out final .06

    Dolphins win!!!

Steelers have some good young talent, Tuitt, Shazier, Jones, but not a dominant NT, though I like their DE’s (Tuitt, Heyward). Dupree should be a real good player in time too, but he has to earn his time and learn the game. Problem is, that’s it for the D, secondary isn’t very good, although I like Shamarko Thomas, he’s got a lot to learn.

They certainly employed a style of D that has largely gone out of fashion in today’s NFL

  29. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

BTW I thought the pats cheated on that 2nd down on the 1 yard line lastnight. They all moved together while screaming the snap. The steelers jumped and called for false start and ended up kicking the FG. That should have been a penalty on the pats and probably a TD. cheaters cheat. that’s what they do.

‘Life is good when you own an NFL team.’

thus the reason the nfl will do nothing about the pats cheating. they are making so much money they dont care. i dont blame them, if i put out a shitty product and people still paid a hell of a lot of money for it why would i bother changing it.

    Never forget indeed.
It’s been 14 years but this morning when i looked at my phone around 9am and i got chills.

  35. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    From the Yahoo Sports article:

In the immediate aftermath of the false start penalty, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger could be seen vehemently arguing the call with officials. Here’s what he told reporters in the game’s aftermath.

“In my years of playing, a defensive guy can’t bark stuff or move in the middle of a cadence. The ref said, ‘We didn’t go in the neutral zone,’ and I agree with him. I wasn’t arguing that part. I was arguing the fact that he shifted in the middle of a cadence, and I thought that there was a rule against it. Maybe there’s not — maybe it’s an unwritten rule — I don’t really know.

“So, that’s what I was more upset about. They do that. We saw it on film that the Patriots do that. They shift and slide and do stuff on the goal line, knowing that it’s an itchy trigger-finger-type down.”

As it turns out, there’s no rule against disrupting a team’s cadence with a defensive line shift, so long as it doesn’t involve “words or signals.” To recap, the Steelers knew the Patriots used this tactic from watching film, committed a false start penalty on the sequence anyhow, and then complained about it afterwards.

  36. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

My biggest problem watching the game last night was the Steelers D. BOY DO THEY MISS DICK LEBEAU. Without him they look vanilla (lack of creativity). All 4 TD from NE went to TE on TE routes (1 on an Hback route to Chandler on a cross moving pick type move). There’s no way Dick would have defended Gronk’s routes the way Pitt DC Keith Butler did…just 1 on 1 with no type of umbrella cover over the top. The pass rush kind of sucked for Pitt overall which is why I’m not surprised to see the Pats’ offense go nuts with that kind of pocket (no up the gut pressure often). NO WAY the Pats OL can be that effective vs Miami (i can’t fathom it).

  37. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP,
Amen on the NFL revenue sharing making all the owners not give a crap.
I thought about that last night when I saw Kraft walking on the field hosting that Lombardi trophy.

  38. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I hate to use the boxing analogy because tim knows how its my go to for things sports related but the one thing I always liked about a boxer such as Bernard Hopkins is that while he was percieved to be dirty, he had alot of good boxing skills. Later on in his career he didn’t need to fight dirty and won on his skills BUT if he encountered an opponent who got dirty with him, he’d take it there and bring the dirty moves back. I’m tired of these opposing coaches of NE not taking it to the Pats when they see shit like what happened with the Steelers last night. IF NE wasn’t getting flagged for their defensive alightment movement stuff; I’d order the same shit on the next defensive play and then REEM the ref if i were to get flagged. Also if my head sets weren’t working i’d walk over and start a fight with the Pats sideline coaches.

Oddshark’s computer model is predicting a 24-22 Dolphins win. Judging by how they analyze the Fins D numbers, they are not accounting for the Suh factor (using just historical analysis). None the less I respect the work that goes into handicapping.

Pats D way underimpressed last night, even with Pouncey out.

But — much as it pains me to say — Brady was his normal capable self.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I thought the secondary scheme was positive for the Pats but of course their front 4 were not as effective as I thought considering the OL of Pitt missing pouncey and also LeVeon Bell (though DeAngelo has always had his moments in the NFL where he explodes).

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah — there back 4/5 made up for it a bit, but the front two lines were underwhelming. And actually think our O scheme will match up to their personnel a lot better than Pitt’s did…..but then we are talking the evil genius here. What we saw last night might not be what we get.

With normal Redskins slot CB Bashaud Breeland suspended, Rogers is expected to get the call in nickel packages between outside CBs Chris Culliver and DeAngelo Hall. Rogers has bounced between five different organizations since entering the league in 2013.

  49. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“In the first quarter of tonight’s game, the Pittsburgh coaches experienced interference in their headsets caused by a stadium power infrastructure issue, which was exacerbated by the inclement weather.”

I agree. As long as one team can cheat and get away with it the NFL will be same ole same ole. Its not even fun to watch because it seems rigged

  78. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    boulder,

i agree. i even turned it off last night especially with that headset radio bs. it is like the pats are just laughing at the nfl. they could careless, they will just do whatever they feel like it knowing they are still going to make a bunch of money and get the wins no matter what bs they pull. they were saying on the radio today there is like 5 teams complaining about that bs with the pats.

i will still watch the fins games, it is a 40+ years habit. not like i will stop, but the nfl holds no value anymore with me. i might as well watch the nba

  79. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim,

it was like waiting for some big movie sequel to come out and when it does you just say, this is just like the first one. there is nothing different. what a waste of time

  80. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

I may be misremembering but didn’t we get penalized a few years ago for advancing the ball during a fumble recovery? Which I don’t think that’s the rule but it’s what I thought of when they scored or nearly did last night.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes and that still pisses me off. Instead of 3rd and long for the Pats after a strip we got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty and they got a new set of downs. All Vernon was trying to do was recover the ball. Total BS!

  81. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

well in the good news department. at least we dont have to hear about serena williams all weekend long

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Herd

That was infuriating that penalty against MIA > Vernon was trying recover the fumble, and he inadvertantly knocked it forward (towards our endzone), and thy called that bullshit penalty. I was driving home from CT when that happened, I couldn’t see it until I got home on replay.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW – Only Andy Pettitte “misremembers”. lol

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

It was a judgement call for sure but given down and distance and field position, there is NO LOGICAL REASON why Vernon would want to advance the ball so the refs basically took an extreme interpretation of the rule and did whatever he wanted with it.

  83. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It was actually that Vernon pushed the ball back after a sack
He was trying to recover it
and the refs said he swatted it backwards – which is illegal
    but not if its incidental

So its not technically advancing the ball
its pushes it back, in case you don;t recover the fumble to hut the offenses field position

I thought he was trying to recover the ball
and it was a bad call for that reason

but if there is a fumble on the filed
the defensive player cannot swat it further back to gain an advantage

    Its the Holy Roller play

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Simple, just put the ball back to where the player allegedly pushed it and that’s the spot. You don’t reward the other team that got rushed and stripped. That makes no fucking sense!

Herd thanks for bringing this up and pissing me off again. LOL

  85. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

At this point, I’m glad the Pats and their fan base are riding a blind high. The Fins just need to take care of their own and then Suh & Wake will feast. Against the Pats I reckon Fede will be a better matchup at RDE to CLUB down those cheating holds the Pats OL like to do.

The Dolphins’ other incentive with cutting McClendon was to avoid guaranteeing salary for full season, which is required if on team 4pm Sat.

SON-OF-A-SON: NICE JOB on “Real Games That Count!”
    ———————
And speaking of “REAL GAMES,” tonight’s game featuring the U.of Miami at Florida Atlantic is the ultimate REAL GAME if you are a fan of the 3-touchdown underdog FAU Owls!! –They have sold STANDING ROOM ONLY TICKETS for tonight’s game at Schnellenberger Field!! –And the namesake, himself, Howard Schnellenberger, will be present along with his beautiful wife, Beverly. Howard, who coached MIAMI to their first National Championship when they defeated Nebraska 31-30 in the Jan. 1, 1984, Orange Bowl, has made his feelings known for this contest. –He will be rooting for FLORIDA ATLANTIC, WHOSE PROGRAM HE DEVELOPED beginning 15 years ago. Look for the HUGE STATUE OF HOWARD inside the stadium!!
    ——————–
Boca Raton police and the highway patrol have warned of major traffic jams on I-95 two hours before kickoff – – a first in the history of the program. Logic, and the opinions of south Florida football pundits, dictate that this game WILL NOT BE CLOSE AND SHOULD BE OVER BY HALFTIME!! But this old FAU alum (Class of ’69) hopes that the experts are wrong. ONE PLAYER, FAU’s senior quarterback, Jaquez Johnson, can keep this game competitive if he equals or improves on last week’s performance (over 250 yards passing and almost 100 yards rushing). IF that happens, FAU will be in this game!! –FFR-I know your son is going to FAU. –I sure hope he, and all other fans of FAU’s young program, have something to cheer about tonight!
    ——————–
    GOOOO-O-O-O OWLS!!

Hi OD, big demand for the game (lots of UM fans wanted in). My dad (UM alum)tried to get tix through his UM connections but they were swamped with too many requests. He looked on stub hub and saw tix going for 100+ at low end so he opted to not go to Boca tonight lol.
