The Wedge Scouting Report: Deion Jones, LB

a boo boo booo boo bah

a weee weee weee wah

Oh hey there…just ignore the baby talk its not for you…Its for this little cutie

WedewithB abyAlien

Adorable isn’t he!

These little Corozar Bay Moon Babies are the cuties things in the universe

a boo boo boo bah…(Wedge shakes a rattle)

Mine?  No no.  I picked this little guy up and about 3000 more as my latest weapon.

You see, the idea is you land on an unsuspecting planet you want to destroy and you give them the “please take my baby” bit.  Who can resist?  Look how adorable he is with his big sad eyes.  Then you fly off and leave the baby behind.

Then after dark…

BabySpaceAlien in Space

Its a whole different baby

On average A Corozar Bay Moon Baby can eat about 60 square miles, inhabited or not, in a 48 hour period.  Pretty impressive!  These little guys have a rabid appetite.

So you have to make a few landings on the planet of you want it devoured within a week.

These babies and there appetite remind me of the attacking linebacker I want the Dolphins to draft.

DionJones6

Deion Jones is one of those linebackers.

The LSU Linebacker was a force for the Tigers in 2015.

Its easy to miss talent like Jones on a talented team like LSU.

LSU puts so much talent in the NFL you should not overlook anyone on their roster.

DionJones5

The 6’1 222 pund linebacker might seem small to some, but that did not stop him from racking up 100 tackles, 13.5 for a loss.

That was his only year starting for LSU.  Jones didn’t start until Kwon Alexander left for the NFL in 2015.  Hey Kown Alexander?  Didn’t I do a scouting report on him last year?

Yep!  And ironically many scouts compare Jones to Alexander.

NCAA Football: Louisiana State at Mississippi State

At the combine Jones caught the attention of the NFL by running a 4.59 40 yard dash.

He also had a 33 inch vertical jump and a 120 inch broad jump at the combine.

But it was his pro day that really set him apart and has him moving up[ the boards.

Deion Jones ran a blazing 4.38 40 yard dash at his pro day.  WOW!

He also upped his vertical jump by 2 1/2 inches and did 18 reps on the bench press.

DionJones2

I know some Dolfans are looking forward to drafting Jones on day 3 of the draft.

But the secret is out.

I’m expecting Deion Jones to be drafted by the time round 3 is over.

So if the Dolphins want this attacking linebacker – they will have to make that move early.

DionJones4

Just like the people who adopt this adorable baby should get the fuck off their planet before it gets dark!

If Deion Jones was an alien weapon of destruction…

he would be the deadly Corozar Bay Moon Baby!

Lookout NFL!

but talking like it’s a forgone conclusion that we are a better team because we have those two guys is something that just boggles the mind.

What boggles my mind is how someone can assume the polar opposite (we “still” suck) for the EXACT same reason. We haven’t seen them on the field together, this year. So yeah you are right, those fans on here who prefer to go into the season with a positive outlook don’t know any more than you what is going to happen this season, but you are ASS U Ming as well.

Maxwell fits the press scheme Gase and VJ want to play on defense and Alonzo is our best LB if he’s 100%.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So let me ask y’all this? If RT makes great strides this season, we should be okay with Thomas, Turner, Douglas and whomever at guard because they’re fine because it’s all on RT. So we don’t need to draft OL, just focus on defense and more skill players. Fair enough?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We don’t need anyone on defense either, we have Suh. I don’t even know why we bother putting 10 other guys out there. lol

Douglas was a rookie and Turner a first year starter. I see guys all around the league get better every year why can’t they? Plus we got Bushrod too.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That is all our hopes as well. We are one of the youngest teams in the league, the YOUNGEST in the AFCE some of our guys WILL develop into good players. Like they always do. I just hope they are on OUR team when they do…..

Not true and I don’t have hate. I like Tannehill but he makes me fucking crazy, mad and incensed.

    son,
ok, sorry my bad for saying hate but you still said what i meant. he makes you so crazy, mad and incensed sometimes you lost reality. you go off blaming him to no end and sometimes just not rationale about it. i dont see anyone going off defending him to the extent the haters go off blaming him.

He had a 91.1 rating in the last 2 mins of a half last year.

Maybe the fact that Miller only ran for 31 attempts in the fourth quarter all YEAR (less than two per game!) and we had goofball “I’m smarter than the other coaches, “I will call a reverse followed by a bubble screen again, they won’t expect that!” Lazor calling plays might have had something to do with it?

well hell. i didnt know that. maybe you are right. he sucks. how dare him and him alone not score more 4th qtr td’s. i mean you see brady do it all the time. amazing how he can block the d line, snap the ball to himself then throw it down field and run and catch it and score. sometimes it is just unfair how he alone can beat 11 guys

Who else had to lead an NFL team with no coaching staff above a raw green position coach?

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, we all saw the jail breaks too many times in our blocking schemes. That has to end for anything to move forward. It happened to the RBs too. You can’t run everything out of shogun. Almost all the moves they made sort of scream 2017. But 2016 is a valuable season to evaluate the coaches and build

You can’t make a contender in one offseason
the moves we make this offseason matter – even if we are able to make bigger bolder moves in 2017

We can’t afford to say – its 2017, now lets makeover the team again
we have to make moves now
and build on them in 2017
and in 2018 and so on and so on

    2 def ends
    2 lbs
    2 d backs
    2 o linemen
    2 qb’s
    2 wr’s

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I see since I left the conversation went south in Tannehill debate again……lol

What happened to debate about quality Linebackers to play behind Suh and our new Wide 9

Sorry guys but I completely agree with what Prof Lou said – if we don’t improve our LB group we are going to get killed in the Wide 9

We need guys who are going to fill the gaps our DL leaves open

And for the record I do think CB, OL, DE and RB are needs as well

but if our LBs come up short next year, everything is lost
so that group needs a dramatic makeover from 2015

I don’t think adding Kiko Alonso is enough by itself

    get me some attacking LBs

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      SOLB – Misi/Hewitt
      MLB – Alonso/Vigil
      WOLB – Jenkins/Hull

Draft a LB to join the mix. I bet Alonso and Jenkins/Hewitt are the two nickel LBs most of the time. 🙂

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I can’t imagine building g a dominant defense with that depth chart at LB

We need at least 1 LB to push to start

      • we really need to find 2 LB’s. Even if Alonso is the answer at one of the positions, Misi has been on life support forever and pretty much everything else we’ve got there is rotational guys with Vigil, Hull and Hewitt. We need to get some really good players at the linebacker position.

      • we played with our DE’s in the 9 a good portion of the time on run downs last season and it’s one of the reasons why teams like the Jets gashed us. Our LB was horrible against the run in those situations and it’s the usual suspects. How do you get better at a position if you’re just going to run with the same people all the time? You can’t. When you’re getting killed in the run game and a good part of the reason is because of the play of your LB’s you need to upgrade. Our LB’s have been shit for a LONG time.

  26. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Naples

Are you not a fan of Ajayi
I tend to think we need 1 RB to split carries with Ajayi
    not 2

if we drafted Elliot, I tend to think Ajayi plays a really reduced role
but other than that – I see the RB we draft (hopefully we draft 1) splitting carries with Ajayi and probably starting the season as the #2 behind Ajayi

2 RBs is a little too much for me
especially since I want to draft a buch of defensive players too…..lol

    • I prefer Dixon but I’d also be very happy with either Booker or Collins. I would hope we’d be able to do a deal w/Philly that would net us Matthews relatively cheap; especially if they end up drafting Elliot with their (our) #8 pick.

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we trade up for Elliot it is pure BPA.

    • If we trade up for Elliot it’s pure stupidity. If the team were a few players away from being extremely competitive and one of those players happened to be a running back then it’s a different story. But, just like signing Suh did shit for the success of the team, drafting Elliot isn’t going to make a huge difference either.
The big thing was we got Maxwell and Alonso in the trade from Philly and it didn’t cost us anything. It did cost us something because it cost us draft position. We probably don’t even have a shot at Lawson now because he may even go top ten. Then, to trade back up and lose draft picks just to get a rb is complete and total stupidity. Unlike Miller, Elliot can’t create anything on his own. The run Miller had against the Giants is a perfect example. Elliot can run with some power but most of his best runs came because he had huge holes in the line where they needed to be.
No way I trade up to get him. If anything, I trade up to get Lawson or Jack before Elliot

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay. You are one person with one view point. Like the rest of us.

        We’re a week a way. 🙂

      • defense win championships. you don’t pass up the opportunity to draft a top defensive player to draft a running back when you can get a rb later in the draft who can split carries with Ajayi and give you a very effective running game. Offensive line still needs to execute it’s blocks and when OSU’s blew holes you drive a Mack truck thru for Elliot he took advantage of it but he still had plenty of runs for little or no gain.

  29. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m gonna slap Tannenbaum in the face with the slimy, smelly old rubber dildo under ffr’s couch if we trade back up in this draft to take a RB. That right there would be enough for me to fire his ass on the spot after trading with Philly and taking two questionable players they were gonna dump anyway AND giving them our top 10 pick….especially in a draft where all the value is in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. And, if it’s no big deal to drop from 8 to 13 in the first place(yeah right)…why the hell would you give up picks to move back up again? Please God let them not be that stupid.

Well, Randy, GET READY because T-Baum and the rest of “THE DOOFUS BRIGADE” are, indeed, THAT STUPID!!!! STEVE ROSS’s tenure as owner has been marked by one poor decision after another!! – – And T-Baum’s last 3 seasons as an NFL executive have been among the worst in recent NFL history!! – – While some on this board think Miami’s current leadership is capable of making excellent choices, my opinion is that the 2016 season likely will be YET ANOTHER FAILED SEASON IN A LONG LIST OF FAILED SEASONS!! Will there be a couple of nice draft picks by Miami? Probably “yes.” Will there be ENOUGH nice draft picks to lift the Dolphins into the playoffs and make them legitimate Super Bowl contenders?? – – – NOT A CHANCE!!!!!!!
    ——————
THIS FRANCHISE IS DOOMED TO FAILURE until Ross, T-Baum, and the rest of the front office is replaced by an entirely new regime with new people from top to bottom. And please, NO MORE NEW YORK REAL ESTATE GUYS at the top of this franchise!! Yes, I know, Ross is coming up on 76 and looks 90. Heard a funny story yesterday from my cousin. Her brother was a brilliant guy (1580 on this SATS) who made a buttload by pretty much reinventing the reinsurance industry. Sadly he passed away about ten years ago from AIDs. Yeah he was gay but he was one that took no shiiiiot.

He’s president of the board of the highest end charity in Telluride (as much a ski playground for the rich as Aspen). Trump wants to get on the board to build his position in the community.

He calls up my cousin and says, “How much do I have to pay to get on the board.” (Keep in mind even if that happens you don’t do it that way).

They went back and forth with Trump pressing for a price, and finally my cous goes, “$250,000.”

Trump asks why the price is so much higher than what he used to paying for such.

The answer: “Well that’s the price for someone as obnoxious as you.”

IMO its the slow and inevitable realization he will get the nomination. There have been staunch republicans you have really opposed Trump as things have gone along that are coming around and endorsing him because its better to unify the party than divide it. Ross may have always supported him or he may have just now flipped over. I really dont know. Still its outside the scrutiny of him as an owner or that his political affiliations actually affect his business judgement.

My personal feelings is i just cant find it in myself to support someone that on my wn principals i do not agree with, so for this reason i will not support him as the nominee in general election. It may be that i will find a independent i actually like and will vote that way, but it may also be just as likely i will abstain from voting since this year offers no one i can feel good about supporting. Its by far the worst selection of presidential candidates i have ever seen.

Round 2 (No. 42): Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Round 3 (No. 73): Kenneth Dixon, RB, Louisiana Tech

  44. D's avatar D says:

I cant see Eagles, with Bradford on their roster, feeling motivated to give up that much to move up and draft a QB. This has to be pre-draft bullshit to drive the demand to move up higher. It would be more likely the 49’ers would make a all out pitch to move to two than the Eagles, and even they arent so desperate to make that move they should give up their future to get Goff. It makes a little more sense but its all pretty damn stupid. To me, despite the MASSIVE distance between the picks, Denver is probably a better candidate, because they can afford to, with their lack of strong team needs, sacrifice a bunch of picks to move up and they would stand the most to gain from it since they are a more complete team and just needing an adequate QB to let them win by way of a strong defense again this year.

Lawson is probably my fav option at #13 even though Elliot is my fav player in the +7 range. I think we all are too focused on a few certain players. Having good coaching and the right scheme seems so much more important. Only one of the Legion of Boom was a high pick(M13 boy). So, somehow, they were able to build their backfield with late talent. In fact, Seattle’s drafts the past 6-7 years have been pretty awful outside the Wilson one.

Great points. I have been harping on coaching, scheme, game planning, play design, & play calling for some time.

It’s amazing how ‘poorly’ Seattle has drafted to be so good. If you get the right guys, it really doesn’t matter from where you get them. Some of the best players for Seattle the past few years have been FAs. It’s not and never has been all about the draft. It can’t be. The draft is a luckfest.

Yep, too much evidence to think otherwise. I see teams like Seattle and NE get the most out of later picks. I see them screw up the draft a lot. You need a better system than the other guy. You need to hit on a few top players from somewhere. That’s it. The blueprint is there. We just need our guys to stay healthy, or have better backups this year. The gameplan has to be better than the other team.

GD i doubt it as well, but if they are looking for a guy with franchise potential, if they are looking for getting that guy THIS year, then they need to shoot for 1 or 2, the rest are just too far off right now and thats including Lynch, who may well develop into the best of the bunch, but right now he is no where near as NFL ready.

yeah but with a guy who MAY be healthy, whether or not you can expect it to last. Having an understudy who can get you through would be better than sacrificing that much with a new coach. It has to be that the GM is on a last leg and he had to go bold or go home, only way to explain that because thats a horrible deal especially for second place. Think how much thats going to handicap the Eagles this year. no second round pick and now no third round pick, go from 1st to 4th round, and next year you give up your first, and the next year your second. Thats some serious handicapping on a first year coach with 3 years to produce.

And you want to have depth. I love the guys in the room … I’m excited about the room we have and if we add somebody else, I’ll be open arms and welcome him in. We’re just there to push each other. Goff 6.51
    Tannehill 84.00

    LOL
Don’t get carried away with that though
    obviously the grading system changed

Tannehill at the time was deemed an immediate starter with pro bowl potential
and the 6 grades I read also indicate pro bowl potential but I don’t think they said immediate starter

    I don’t think it matters
If you see your guys and you like your guy – YOU STRIKE

QBs have to be treated differently than any other position
some people thought 12 was early for Tanny – but who cares
if that’s your guy, then that’s your guy
You know your guy won’t be in the 2nd round or possibly after a trade down

So if you like a QB you have to strike

It also particularly easy for scouts to miss on QBs
    easier than most positions IMO

Andrew Luck and John Elway were uniquely embraced by all

but think about guys like Tom Brady or Ryan Leif
that position is full of misses
you got to almost flat out ignore grades

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Randy,

I think given our position, our coaches, and the FO, the Tanny pick made total sense. Came from our OC’s college system….no brainer. He was easily the 3rd best (by just about anyones evaluation AT THAT TIME) QB that draft the other two already selected. Could we have traded back got him later, probably but not definitely. Could we have picked a different position/player gone with a guy like Cousins later, yes (i actually had plenty of mocks i did with us doing just that) but would that have surely panned out better….who knows. I mean these arent arguments you can have because its 1 ) hard to remember exactly what the situation was then, removing what you know now, and its impossible to know if you change variables what the output comes out to be since so many other variables also change when you adjust one.

The pick did make sense, but ask me if i think it would have made sense for us to have given up two thrids, a next years first and a year afters 2nd and my answer would have been hell fucking no we are retards if we make that choice. Taking Tanny at 8 where we already were is not comparable to that trade. If the Eagls had stayed put and selected Lynch at 8 that would be an almost identical comparison since Lynch is rougly the same level of ram with the same upsides that Tanny seemed to have at the point we drafted him

His deal is 2 years but most of it is up front this year. They could move on next year. But they also paid their backup Chase Daniels 3 years $21M to not play so their investment in the position is very high and a bit bizarre.

Pretty sure doesnt take much rummaging to find something that stinks in his stools. Might not even have to get very close at all to find it.

Yeah the strategy of it makes 0 sense. The strategy of it said 2nd round QB to me, maybe Lynch at 8…in no way did it seem to say we are planning on fucking our new coach for 3 years so he will get replaced by then….as it does to me now.

years and years and years from now. some time in 2076 the rule of thumb will be

‘son, there are three things now you dont discuss with family, religion, politics and tannehill. it is just sure to end up in a fight”

    D,
I think Daniels ends up being their backup long term and Bradford will be gone. I don’t think any of the moves the Eagles have made means they won’t draft a QB. I have a hard time believing they’d give up those picks for anything but a QB. Nobody in this draft is worth all those picks, but teams are willing to do it for QBs. Do you have thoughts on who they may value that highly to give up all those picks if it’s not a QB?

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Only other choices are Ramsey since they lost Maxwell, Zeke since they seem so high on him, or Tunsil to protect chicken legs.

The Eagles GM was just on the radio and he said it will be one of the QBs, they like both, like chocolate and strawberry. LOL

    • D's avatar D says:

The only person id come close to valuing as high would be Ramsey, and i would just as likely to be just as dumbfounded if i heard they traded for him.

There are several QB’s coming up in Chip Kelly, Kayaa, Watson, Barrett, Fauk that all look pretty decent and by this time next year i think a couple of them will be as highly touted as those guys this year. I just dont think you trade away that much with a new coach, on a team thats got a lot of holes. I dont care how much you like the guy and how much you think of him, there is a too much for that guy thing. Teams have severly crippled themselves making moves like that, and i would bet if i went back and evaluated the number of times its been done, that the percentage that it instantly paid dividends is going to be really low.
