Jordan’s Back

It’s been such a long time, so much has happened, so many things have changed since we last saw the no. 3 overall pick from the 2013 Draft. But alas, Dion Jordan has been reinstated on a conditional basis to begin his comeback with the Miami Dolphins.

Jeff Ireland, the guy who drafted him, thankfully is long gone. Joe Philbin, his first NFL head coach is gone. 151622700-0Dennis Hickey the GM who managed to add enough talent to almost make him forgotten is also gone. However, one guy who wasn’t here is now here and it may make all the difference in the world. Kiko Alonzo his former team mate and room mate in college at Oregon. Alonzo has proclaimed Jordan to be healthy and focused. Time will tell, and tell quickly as Jordan must prove during this training camp that he is ready to continue his NFL career without incident.

New Dolphin head coach Adam Gase has said Jordan will be evaluated by his performance and that Gase has no prior familiarity with the player. For Jordan’s sake that’s a good thing. The only thing Dolphin fans can hope for is that Jordan passes his upcoming tests with flying colors and becomes a force on a defense everyone feels has made some improvements as we head into the 2016 season.

Best of luck Dion Jordan

Just throwing numbers out there doesn’t cut it, as the same could be said for RT. Parker had numbers against SD, but not until the game was out of reach, but against the Cheats he made big plays when it mattered. I give Parker a pass on last year, because of the coaching mess. We still need to see big plays on 3rd down in the 4th.

I googled it, and it means if it isn’t hard why bother doing it. Make practice hard so games will seem fun, not as hard as practice. From Navy Seal training.
    —————————————

At first i scan read it and had already moved on to steves reply before Rock’s statement sunk in and my mind combined it into if it isnt hard, we aint sucking it…. just goes to show you two things can mean the same thing but if you combine them…..big time different meaning.

  35. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Steve, even if the team is only as relevant as last year it will be appreciably louder down on the field. I read that they hired an acoustic engineer when they were designing the roof structure and that it is designed to fucus the noise that in the past went up into the sky back towards the field and that each successive panel in the roof is angled a little more than the last one to focus the noise to the field like a big parabolic lens.

  36. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I like seeing McPain showing some flash again in camp….but this time I think he has a chance as a legit reserve DE in rotation with the Wide-9 DL schemes. It’s well suited for his speed & quickness to drive around the slower RT’s in the game as well as pulling the lone back outside to block, freeing up the middle for LB’s etc.
This also is a great scheme for Dion FF for the same reasons. VJ’s unit will be able to attack from different angles along the line getting the OT’s out of position into uncomfortable territory, & same with the backs that stay in to pick up the blitzes. This will allow for someone else to exploit free runs at the QB’s.

Tom Lady better be glad he doesn’t have to face us at least one game this year!

You better believe it. I actually have 2 separate dishes I keep it in. One for Sativa strain and the other Indica. Indica is for going to sleep. Sativa is for going out.

Neither is good for playing football on 🙂

  56. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Steve

I think if the Dolphins are placing faith in undrafted free agents from a year ago, you take a serious risk. If their is a weak place on our roster right now it’s LB (although some would argue its CB)

a LB in the first couple days of the draft probably would have helped
I guess we will have to see how much Howard and Drake contribute
The Tunsil pick was a nobrainer IMO, so no matter what happens I don’t fault the FO for not taking a LB in the 1st

but if the dat 2 guys they contributing in 2016, which is possible, I think drafting a LB might have made a bigger difference to us now

    We will never know

On the other hand drafting Phillips instead of a LB in 2015 seems to have worked well for us

but I have to admit, as much as I like Phillips, seeing a player like Perryman on our roster might change how I feel about our Lbs going into the season

I don’t get why we are ignoring the LB position especially given the investment on Suh

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We had bigger needs than LB, and Tunsil pushed things back a round. We had to go CB in the 2nd, but LB could’ve gone in the 3rd. I don’t think we needed another LB unless it was in the first. Only 2 play most of the time anyways.

  57. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

We needed a starter at CB, so that was necessity. The Tunsil pick probably would have been a CB if he didn’t fall to us. The 3rd RD was really the first opportunity to take a LB

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It wasn’t a deep draft for LBs. A lot of guys talked about went pretty late.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

and what if Howard doesn’t start?

the needs of the team are a result of all the moves
One of the reasons we got the point where we needed CBs was bc we decided to go in a direction looking for big CBs

      its not just the draft
its the other moves that created the need at CB

at the end of the day we find ourselves with question marks in both units
but LB is one that was neglected

based on the LB play last year – I’m not sure we can say that CB was a greater need than LB.

I guess neither was good last year

I don’t want to talk about offseason moves anymore
I know how defensive people are

It was a benign statement about drafting LBs after neglecting to do so with a need for a couple of years and I responded to Steve

Its not intended to be taken as doomsday

I’m no going to paint a dark cloud over the team before we have a single snap

Lets leave it at me being upset that we haven’t drafted a LB early in some time
I don’t understand why the FO doesn’t value that position a little more
I spent years arguing the same thing about WRs before we changed that recently

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m just taking about what we needed to do in the draft. We do have 3 starters at LB, not that I think they’re great. At CB we had nothing but Maxwell, McCain in the slot, and hopefully Lippett. I think CB was clearly a bigger need going into the draft.

  58. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

if you factor in the trade up for Carroo
and the trade up to get Howard
the Dolphins had a lot of opportunities to address both LB and CB before day 3 was over

There was room to address both
even room to address LB. CB and RB

and I’m under the impression Howard would have been available a little later in the draft
I think the move was made when it was made was bc Howard was a big CB and that was our new direction. He fit need and style for the Dolphins, which is a good thing, but if need was the only issue I’m not sure we focus on Howard and instead wait to see the talent of who falls

    I certainly wanted a CB
But I did not fathom that would have costed us a LB in the draft
and I’m not sure it should have

I’m not sure that we don’t end up leaving day 2 with Drake, Howard and a LB with different moves
maybe even Drake, Howard, a LB and Carroo

    but we will never know
I do think we know that when the team made those moves they were giving up the chance to draft a LB early though

So I see that the team made a choice and didn’t necessarily have to make the moves they made based on need

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You really only need one great to very good LB, the rest can be average or slightly above. I believe they intended to take one early, when the top 2 had injury concerns it, along, with Tunsil changed things. I think we have that in Alonso, if not LB for sure is the top priority next year.

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Carrooooooo!!!!! Will make you forget about LB’s!

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s not forget that a healthy Jenkins and the addition of Alonso makes a big difference at LB.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I like Hewitt, but not really enough of a sample size on him. Alonso so far seems to be the right guy in the middle, he gets to the play quicker than anyone else we have. Then there’s the wildcard with Jordan, but I’m thinking he’s not playing LB at 275, but it might make sense. Vance might just get creative owith him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I can see Jordan being used as a wide 9 DE but also as a LB at times though not exclusively. We may want to pressure opposing O-lines with 5 up front with say Jenkins and Alonso as two ILBs with Jordan as a hybrid rush/drop guy.

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tim you should create a clothing line called let’s not forget…😉

  62. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With Spikes coming in for a visit it sure seems like the FO isn’t taking any chances this year with depth issues that have plagued us in the past. I expect a vet CB to be looked at next.

  63. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Let’s not forget Carroooooooooo!

  64. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What we might be hearing and the media probably makes it out to be more than it should be – is not that the coaches aren’t happy with Alonso, Jenkins and Misi as starters and maybe not even Hewitt, Vigil (back issue) and Hull as depth, but maybe the other 5 or so guys are not really showing enough so they want to make sure throughout camp they have as much depth as they can find. Though I did hear James Burgess blew up Williams on one play that was impressive.

What I’m saying is this could be more about that 5-7 roster spot at LB on the 53 not the top 4.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think you can take it to the bank, that it’s about the 5-7 roster spot. Now if one of our starters falters all bets are off, but at this stage yes I agree.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s all going to hinge on Alonso. We know what we have with the other LB’s- average talent and production. Hopefully Jenkins can stay healthy and take the next step. If he and Alonso can get back to where they were, then we may have something. I always worry about the “what if” scenario’s because the seldomly work out.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They seldom work, because we look at the team success to determine them, unless the situation turns into what Grimes gave us his first 2 years.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Health is always important. The Cowboys can never replace Sean Lee because he’s really good and teams are not loaded with guys like that. We’re no different than other teams. If we get back a 2014 Jenkins (who was really good) and a healthy Alonso then we’re better at LB than in previous years regardless of what Misi does. As long as Misi is healthy he always gives you a hard days work. Let’s see who settles in that first guy off the bench, role player or hybrid etc.

Remember most times only two LBs will be on the field with all the sub packages being played these days due to the spread. That’s why DB was more important to this staff than adding multiple high commodity LBs.

VJ said he believes the key to good defense is pass rush and outside coverage. Not that nothing else is important but if you don’t that, you’re toast.

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

True Tim, but LB killed us last year, we must get good LB play from at least one of them. Spikes was brought in for a look, as insurance.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Sheppard at MLB was a big part of the problem. That and Jenkins playing less than at full strength and then Misi getting banged up. Injuries to your starters always hurts. We were too green in the depth dept. last year. Now we have some guys with some experience under their belts.

The defense is going to be very different regardless of whether they are good or not, but it won’t be the same with the exception of a handful of players – the core rotations will be very different. Let’s hope they got it right! 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you’re going to play the wide 9 you better be able to tackle, and the LB are a big part of that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree and I don’t see that being a problem as Sheppard was a big reason for missed tackles in the middle of the field. He let too many plays come to him rather than sniff it out and blow it up. He got ran over multiple times much like Ellerbe did. Our DL also struggled to not contain the run so if that improves the LB play should as well.

The wide 9 creates free gaps for the LBs to exploit. If they don’t react quick enough we’ll struggle against the run again. However I do feel Alonso and Jenkins will do that. Not to leave Misi out of it but I can see him being used as a 2-down LB/blitzer which he’s pretty good at – he’s physical and better at the POA than in space.

I don’t know how, but it keeps slipping my mind that we are @Seattle week one. That’s a very tough draw. I guess the postive is we go cross country Week One. which will probably cut down on the normal fatigue of a long flight.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seattle week 1 is actually a good thing. They lost week 1 to the Rams last year, not sure where it was played, but as I posted this morning they’re geared towards finishing strong not starting strong, so they’re beatable week 1. Not saying we will or it will be easy, just that they may not be at their best

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We won’t be at our best, but Seattle won’t have tape on us, so we may not have to be.

  67. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Seattle seems like they have a weak OL, but put Wilson behind any line and he can make enough plays with his feet to negate that weakness.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

It’s a legitimate concern Steve. We usually have trouble with those types of QB’s. Hopefully Vance will remedy that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What’s worse is, going to the press coverage the CBs will not be looking at the QB most of the time, so more susceptible to him running.

Spikes left Miami without a contract; instead, the ‘Fins signed linebacker Danny Lansanah, a five-year veteran who mostly recently spent three years in Tampa Bay, Ben Volin of The Boston Globe reported.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Spikes was cut from his last 2 stops for a reason, I thought he might have had something left, but whatever let the young 2015 UDFAs play.

SMH, you guys go on and on about shoulda coulda woulda with our draft & offseason. I get the reasons to analyze it. But let’s face it. Every sub .500 team has 1-2 units/positions that get neglected or not able to address in the draft or offseason.
When you’re sub .500, and one of the youngest teams in the league, there’s only so many moves at your disposal in 1 offseason.
Bear in mind that some of these young guys will develop too. Why hold them back just to keep drafting rookies ahead of them early & then being forced to put those also developing rooks on the field too soon???

Let’s see where this new coaching staff & new systems, schemes, & play calling takes us first.
I have confidence that will be heads & tails above what we were exposed to under the Bazooka Joe and his staff’s era.

Gase recently said Parker doesn’t run great routes, because he rounds them off. WTF is that, and NFL WR rounding off routes. Just watched Ajayi planting his foot and making a hard cut on a route. How FN hard is it to run a route without rounding it off? Lazy.

He said he wouldn’t be surprised. I see his point, but there would be so much backlash from this, that I don’t think they want to start the Gase Era this way. I don’t think the light has come on for Dallas, he looked good last year in camp too.

  80. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

He basically said Dallas Thomas’ experience makes him better equipped to handle the job. I disagree. I haven’t seen Dallas Thomas show he can handle anything yet.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not true, Dallas plays good for most of the game, then has those screw ups at the most inopportune times. You think Tunsil’s experience makes him better equipped to handle the job? Its all BS any ways, because you play a rookie with the hope he does well, but know he’s going to have rookie moments. I think Tunsil is the better option.

  81. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Would be different if Tunsil was drafted as the tackle of the future and we had a vet guard who had been starting and playing at least average for a while.

Even then it would be a longshot. How many non-QB overall 13 picks do you think haven’t line-ed up on opening day for reasons other than injury? My guess is very few…..and you can find the word “bust” included in their NFL internet bios.

Some of O and Perkins’ comments on practice today.

Starting to sound like Gase is a Forster fan.

    ———————————————–

    — Top performers of Day 6: 1. Branden Albert (solid work) 2. Brandon Doughty (2 TDs in limited work) 3. K Marshall Koehn (6-for-6).

    — Adam Gase described Shawn Jefferson’s coaching style as “psychotic.” “He is constantly pushing his guys to not take one second off.”

    — “He is not falling behind mentally. The sooner we can get him back the better. But it’s so day-to-day,” Gase on Jay Ajayi.

    — “His ability to feel holes in the run game, and how smooth he is in the pass game,” Gase on Foster, whom he compared to Matt Forte.

    — “Everyday is a new day for him. We see how he feels that morning….whatever we suggested he’s been on board,” Gase on Arian Foster.

    — “I feel great with where he is at right now. He’s really trying to expand what he can do at the line of scrimmage,” Gase on Tannehill.

    — Dolphins practicing in shorts and shoulder pads today.

    — 1st team OL unchanged in drills: C Pouncey, LG Thomas, RG Turner, LT Albert, RT James

    — CB Tony Lippett with starters in DB-only drill. We’ll see if that translates to 11 on 11.

    — Three receivers are working with Jakeem Grant, trying to get him to catch contested passes better.

    — Starting weakside linebacker Jelani Jenkins is getting his right hamstring looked at by a trainer.

    — WR DeVante Parker (hamstring), RB jay Ajayi (knee), RB Isaiah Pead (hamstring) not practicing.

    — Watching DeVante Parker run his sprints and that hamstring injury doesn’t look good. Might take some time.

    — Jay Ajayi looks like he might be back in the next few practices. He’s running well.

  87. D's avatar D says:

Spikes if healthy is a beast of a run stopper at LB, he is however a liability in coverage so he would be a two down thumper/situational rotation guy.

    • D's avatar D says:

TBH if our defense is successful in funneling their game plan to the middle, Spikes would then be a better option on run downs than Kiko. Could give Kiko a break on run downs. If they start moving back to bouncing it outside on a consistent basis, Kiko stays in on runs downs as well. Spikes is a better LB for up the middle rushes.

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase seems to really like Damien, and O says he blocks like a man, so I’ll give him another shot, but I still don’t like him running the ball or on KO returns. He’s good catching the ball though, and good after the catch.

  89. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

He had that wrist injury last year that caused him to drop returns and some deep passes. Hopefully that is passed him.

  90. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

The LB unit like the CB unit is a bit banged up at the moment.
The team needs active LB out there performing against the O so they had to sign a warm body I guess. Hopefully the guys heal up fast and start to make an impact closer to when the season is about to begin.

It’s definitely a drill for Grant to partake in but in reality, most DB probably won’t get much of a chance to contest a pass on him if it’s thrown right. He is going to smoke the field.
