The Porcine Oddyssey #102: The Saga of The Mediocre White

During the summer, when we wait for the football season to begin and swim in the ocean

We fear what might be beneath the surface of the ocean…

Sharks scare all of us.

And there is no shark more fearsome than:

THE GREAT WHITE SHARK

GreatWhiteShark2

But not all sharks are so great.

There is at least one who is

well…kind of mediocre…

MediocreShark Whatevs

Meet The Mediocre White

slightly less accomplished than some of the other white sharks

and like you…a fan of the Miami Dolphins

MediocreChairDolphin

On an August afternoon the Mediocre White was hunting seals with a two of his shark buddies

They found the perfect spot and were ready to feast.

The first Great White turned to the other Great White barely noticing the Mediocre White lagging behind both of them.

“What’s your plan?”

The Second Great White responded “I’m gonna go deep, get a big push and leap out of the water with the biggest seal in my jaws”

“Nice!”, the first Great White responded

“You’ll get in National Geographic…I plan something a little more dubious…I’m gonna bite a baby by the back of its’ tail, drag it a little father out to the ocean, wait for its’ mother to swim out to the baby, then eat her.  Then I’ll eat the baby for dessert”

Impressed, the Second Great White turned to the Mediocre White “How about you?”

SharksCheckingoutSeals

“Oh me?”  The Mediocre Shark was barely paying attention

“Um…you know dude…I’m gonna like, put my fin above the water and like circle the seals and then eat one”

“lame” interrupted the First Great White

“What happened to you man? ”  The Second Great White disappointedly said, “You used to be great.  Now you are so…Mediocre…”

The two Great Whites swan away leaving The Mediocre White.

That day The Mediocre White didn’t eat any seals.  Instead he thought to himself

WHAT HAPPENED…

In the 70’s he was Great.

One year, in 1972, he was perfect, never missing a seal or a human he hunted.

Those were the days, The Mediocre White was the envy of all the other sharks.  He ate whatever he liked, he spawned with whatever shark he liked, he even roomed with Steven Spielberg in college.  Some say he was the inspiration for Jaws.

SharkSpielberg

Though he never achieved perfection again.  He had some great moments after the 70’s.

In the early 80’s The Mediocre White continued to be a fearsome hunter in the ocean.  At the same time he enjoyed watching the Dolphins make Super Bowl runs.

Despite a chum strike in ’82, he finished second among all sharks in surfer limbs eaten.  Only a shark named Riggins ate more arms that year.

In ’83, he grew his greatest rookie tooth.  By the tooth’s second year he was setting records for flesh eaten.

The Mediocre White almost enjoyed the new tooth as much as he enjoyed watching Dan Marino throw the ball.

MARIPHU008006_zoom_IMAGE1_222337.jpg

By 1985 The Mediocre Shark was making great memories by eating Bears on prime time.

But as great as the tooth was, the Mediocre White failed to surround his tooth with quality other teeth.

Defensively, everything got through his mouth, and he found himself forced to digest entire scuba divers, tanks and all.

Unbelievably, during the tooth’s entire career, the shark failed to hunt down a 1000 yard swimmer.

Eventually when that special tooth fell out, the Mediocre Shark wondered if he was ever achieve what he did in the 70’s again.

Meanwhile the Dolphins moved from Don Shula to Jimmy Johnson to Dave Wannstedt

The Dolphins had a few great players in that time:  Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas…Ricky Williams lead the league in rushing one year.  And like the Dolphins the Mediocre White enjoyed eating an occasional swimmer.

But it was not what it used to be.  He wasn’t really Great anymore…

Now it seemed these up and coming New England Sharks were eaten all the best humans

By the end of Wannstedts tenure it became obvious…he was just mediocre now…

So he left hunting and went in a different direction.

The Mediocre Shark took up engineering.

He wanted to build something.  Just like he believed Nick Saban wanted to build something with the Dolphins.

In his first building project he built the Daunte Culpepper Bridge:

SharkBridgeFail

Saban would not accept failure and either would Mediocre White.

He really insisted on Building something!

Like Saban,  his next building project made people cry.

staircasefailshark

So Saban would leave the Dolphins and The Mediocre White would leave engineering.

Now he was ready for a new direction.

The Dolphins hired Cam Cameron and The Mediocre White took up work as a Park Ranger.

At a county meeting he attend determine to make a difference

“Broh’s” he pleaded to the County Council,

“We need to stop the deer deaths on the highway”

The Mediocre White raised his fin, “I propose we move the deer crossing signs away from the highway to a place less dangerous for the deer to cross, we should move the signs to the middle of the forrest”.

Deer crossing sign in Idaho.

That year deer deaths on the highway increased by 800%

As the Dolphins moved on from Cam Cameron The Mediocre White also moved on from being a Park Ranger.

The Big Tuna was ready to turn things around for the Dolphins and the Mediocre White was ready to turn things around for himself as well.  He took a job with the City.

Everyone assumed given his prior history of greatness, like the Tuna, he would excel.

They gave him a simple task.  The streets need to be painted to make them safer.

Any shark can do that right?

stopsignshark

Well…maybe not this shark…

He failed at first

rightturnonlyshark

and failed again.

eventually…the Dolphins found themselves in the Ireland era

And the Mediocre White found himself operating a draw bridge

He was a colossal fuck up…like Jeff Ireland

shark drawbridgefail

So the Dolphins found themselves in the Philbin era

and The Mediocre Shark found himself bouncing around from odd job to odd job

he tried parking cars as a valet

valetshark

That didn’t last long

So he got a job as a custodian

but he often found himself late at performing his duties…

African American businessman falling on wet floor in office

He really wasn’t very good at anything anymore…

But we all know what he is:

He is a hunter!

The 2016 football season has not started yet…

The Mediocre White wants to be Great again

Is this the year?

tanny and the rest of the team need to play better in 4th quarter when game is on the line. That’s the main thing I hope happens this year.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

drg, “Not saying he isn’t a great player, but an average team shouldn’t target him and pay him the biggest FA contract in history thinking it will take them to the next level.”

Mike E and I have had this discussion. We were not a Suh away like the Packers were when they signed Reggie White. Last year blew up in our face, no doubt. That doesn’t mean Suh in his prime doesn’t have a monster season this year which I think he’s going to have. Just a rosy colored glasses homer feeling. LOL

I can’t really disagree with what you said. I’m pretty sure I’ve said almost everything you said about Suh, about the way Tannenbaum just loves to jump around in the draft, although I was happy with the draft for the most part. I do think he gets caught up more with wheeling and dealing rather than just picking great players for the roster.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Do you really know it was him and not Grier or is that just perception?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No way of me ever knowing for sure, but it follows the same pattern he’s always operated under, so assuming it was him seems fair to me.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think TBaum is that entrenched in prospect evaluation at this time. He’s not the personnel guy, he oversees the direction of the team because Ross hired him to do just that. I feel this idea that Grier is a mere puppet is unfair and inaccurate.

He and Gase can say Grier did a great job putting the draft board together and working the draft, but as long as some people say wink wink that makes it true? I don’t think that is how this FO works.

Passing thoughts from Punta Cana. Yes Hulk working on his tan. He needs to be darker shade of green.

There is a reason why Matt Moore is not a starting Quarterback in the NFL.

Tannehill’s contract is not that onerous when looked at in comparison with other starting QBs.

You don’t build around a DT. They are great and important pieces to have but rarely is a team built around one.

Hulk off to get another pina colada

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If you’re starting over building a team and you don’t see a QB available where do you start?

Most sports teams build from the inside out. DT/Edge rusher/C, P/C/SS/CF in baseball, D/G in hockey. It’s always how you win. Barry Sanders was amazing, but…?

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

        Tim:

Is it possible Grier said I like Howard and Carroo, and T-Baum took the reins and did what he thought he had to do to get them?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think TBaum was more like… okay. Grier is a grizzled vet personnel guy. We didn’t just hire him off the street. He’s cut his teeth in an NFL personnel family with NHL connections which is hi-level sports his whole life. Sometimes fans and media put themselves on the same level with no accomplishment whatsoever! I have to admit it irritates me. When you’re not in the biz, don’t act like you have more intricate opinions because you don’t.

Go with the flow and hope for the best. What… our sports teams owe us something? LMAO!!!!

    Tim

While Grier is a grizzled veteran personnel guy, Mikey T is a grizzled wheeler dealer, and Grier has never actually made a deal in a draft before, so maybe it was Grier with a guiding hand of Mr. T, but I can’t get myself to believe that Grier happens to deal like a madman just like T-bomb does. I can’t.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think anyone was a madman. Tunsil falling to us, trading up with that lethal 4th to land a corner who was top 40 on a lot teams’ boards? Forget the pre-draft mock BS – we all targeted prospects we had high values on and some of them went 5th rd on. Check yourself at the door. You’re not really that qualified just because you can read and hear. LOL

If we do get the 3rd, 4th and 7th we expect in the 2017 compensatory draft why does anyone care?

Now if that doesn’t happen but Howard and Carroo ball, do you care? 🙂

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, this is an exercise in futility. I don’t care anymore, I’m happy with the players we got, but I still think T-Bomb had his hand in it. I like our draft, so really, that’s all that matters.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Did you say TBaum had his “hand” in it? LOL

Of course, he replaces Parcells as the Czar of football operations. I just don’t believe the draft trades were the work of TBaum. I really don’t.

    Tim

I could see Collins getting fired. They need a shakeup. I don’t think it’s his fault, but the team is underachieving for sure. Try to comprehend this. Granderson had about 15 HR’s and 28 RBI’s in June, and now he has 18 HR’s and 31 RBI’s. That’s outrageous. We’re in August!!

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

397 AB’s, most on the team, and 31 RBI’s. Granted, he did bat leadoff the majority of the time, but still, there are plenty of AB’s when he’s up w/ men on base.

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, the Mets are a patchwork lineup. Unless we go on a run which isn’t happening as we know, it is what it is. A mediocre team. I loved last year. I’ll take that from the Dolphins in 16/17. LOL

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

DRG, you can’t worry about a QBs cap hit if he has the potential RT does. You lose him or her doesn’t work out and it could set you back for years. You get rid of him when you’re convinced he can’t be that franchise QB.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can’t win a lot of games when you score 0-3 runs and the only reason you score a few is due to a HR. They don’t have rallies. They waste so many good starting pitching performances.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

All true, but I’m more concerned with the lack of hitting and defense from the catching position. I could argue that Lucroy would have been the much better target for us as compared to Jay Bruce. I’m tired of teams running at will. Every single or walk leads to a run.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s a safety. He has been playing at 205/210 since he was drafted. He’s listed at 6-1 but looks taller. You need good depth at safety and he’s a very good STs player. Jones, Isa, Thomas and Aikens are our safeties. Thomas also works as a nickel back with McCain.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Where did you get that from? Have you heard of this from practice? Talk of Sua Cravens before the draft, they were saying teams would use him in this type of role, but I haven’t heard of us using it. I could see Jones, Quddus, or maybe even Aikens playing that role, and maybe why Aikens weighs 220 now.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You answered it at the end. They all have good size, are physical and they can run – all legit 4.5 guys. But it was my opinion not something I read or heard. I was thinking about matchups.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I like it, why put an LB into coverage when you have a safety like Jones that can do a better job of covering, and probably tackles better too, then replace Jones’ S spot with another cover DB. If you can’t stop the run its all moot.

  47. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Aikens is listed at 6-1 218 on the official roster now. He looks more like 6-3 to me but whatever. We need this 2014 4th rd pick to take his game to another level. I remember Gil Brandt thinking he could be a sleeper safety.

  50. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, if you’re playing a team with bigger receivers in nickel:
    LDE Wake
    LDT Suh
    RDT Mitchell/Phillips
    RDE Williams
    LB Alonso
    LB Jenkins
    CB Maxwell
    CB Lippett/Howard/Culliver
    SS R. Jones
    FS IAQ
    NB Aikens

If you’re playing a team with smaller receivers in nickel:
    LDE Wake
    LDT Suh
    RDT Mitchell/Phillips
    RDE Williams
    LB Alonso
    LB Jenkins
    CB Maxwell
    CB Lippett/Howard/Culliver
    SS R. Jones
    FS IAQ
    NB B. McCain/Thomas

Not a huge difference but it is different.

Damon Harrison beats Dallas Thomas and hits Ryan Tannehill on a throw. Three plays two QB cream pies. YIKES!

  67. New Age's avatar New Age says:

D Thomas is the world record holder for fastest man…running backwards. Runs almost faster than a highly paid DE can keep up with him.

  85. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

ok. So the offense is a work in progress. I’m glad we hired an offensive guru as coach. Think how bad it’d be if we’d hire a defensive coach. 🙂

At least the wide 9 is causing some issues for the Gmen. Clean up the penalties and the D isn’t doing to bad.
