It’s Game Day! Miami @ Seattle – Game One

capture(Header from CBS Sports)

Game Day.  It’s about damn time!   To make matters worse, the football scheduling gods have determined that we have to wait an additional 3 hours 5 minutes to begin the season.   I don’t know about anyone else but I think this offseason has been the longest by far.  We have a new coaching staff, some new players, and a brand new season that’s going to go by way too fast.  Hopefully we are enjoying every minute of it.

LETS GO DOLPHINS!!!!

New England, minus Brady & Gronk, beats Arizona in Arizona! This certainly puts more pressure on Miami to beat the Cheats in Foxboro. Item #1 is for the O-Line to do a better job of protecting Tannehill, who was lucky to avoid a serious injury in Seattle. This would be the perfect time for this O-Line to “SHOW ME!”

    D,
I looked back to see which point you are talking about me not understanding. The last thing I replied to was a Cameron Wake tweet that Piggy posted.

We are gonna play hem tough like we always do

      Can’t miss opportunities like yesterday

I think we’re going to play better on offense, and I’m really hoping Parker is ready to play and make an impact. We need that

This hero was a part of the group I go away with. I never met him, he died a couple of years before I met these people. He has tons of family and friends in our group that are also firefighters and police, and this is the reason why I feel so strongly against any protests during 9/11

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

My brother is military, ex-police and my nephew is police. Not only do I hate 9-11 protests but I also think some of these protests are focusing on one aspect of a very complicated issue.

I wonder how much money stills cost himself with that drop. SMH. If you can’t catch that ball why are you in the NFL?

  7. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wasn’t Seattle in the same close low scoring defensive game as us? That’s the kind of game it was. It’s not a game to evaluate the offense moving forward.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

By the way the Pats defense looked pretty good last night and they won on the road against a good team. I’m not going to just mark it off as a win in NE because they don’t have Brady. It’s going to be another tough game.

  9. D's avatar D says:

SB7 I was directing it more at your 9:15 post. Again protesting the country isn’t my problem. Protesting the country, or as I feel it is, disrespecting the country because of racial issues with the police seems misplaced and disrespectful for sake of civil unrest not progress.

I think protesting the president is in some ways acceptable here since he has power to enact change. I think protesting state governments is in play, because again they have ability to enact change. Protesting the police targets the exact group who seem to be their targets. All those seem valid targets in this fight, but the country itself and those who have died for it. Way off base. That’s not helping this situation it’s making it worse.

  10. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

So, with time to reflect on that “come from behind loss”.

I’ve been conditioned to expect us to not play well against a good team. We’ve played some good games against really good teams in the last few years. BUT, my feeling last night was that we had a chance for a ‘signature’ win… A game very few non-Fin fans gave us.

I was disappointed that we played competitive… just one of those “damn it, we could have had a W in one of our toughest games on the schedule”.

  11. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Defense: looked really good. Tackling has been better than any time in the last several years.

    ST: mediocre

Offense: we just need to find ways to get more first downs. Time of Possession matters when it is 9 minutes difference. At halftime I told my family that this game was looking like a last minute drive for a win for Seattle (honestly). Fatigue matters. Controlling the ball matters.

Hopefully, Parker can help us in this area. I’ve about given up on our TE’s.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The OL still doesn’t get a lot of push in the running game. Our run plays always look like the backs are running a gauntlet. That has to improve to have more of a ball control offense.

  12. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

The game yesterday was very annoying. Old problems resurfaced but none the less
It was there for the taking by both teams and the home team won by the standard ~3 pts advantage odds makers give the home team for the home factor.
It’s hard to judge the team by 1 game but I expect better I guess with Gase.
It’s going to be hard to change bad habits but none the less I’m hopeful the team will adopt Gase personality as the season wears on.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The team has new coaches and a lot of new and young players. They still need to learn each other. I think they will in time. Just need to get a few wins along the way.

  13. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Carroo had a good outing for his first run against top notch competition.

  14. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

My top 6 most annoying plays yesterday:

6.How wide open Baldwin got on 4th and 4 with close to 2 minutes to go.
5.Franks FG blocked from <30yds out
4.Cam Wake personal foul on Wilson.
3.Grant running the ball out of the end zone on final kickoff given time at hand.
2.4th and inches run call instead of a QB sneak (IMO anything less than 1 foot = AUTO QB SNEAK CALL 100% of the time)
1.Kenny Stills wide open dropped pass

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Wake thought Wilson got rid of the ball. Just because Fouts said he did, I’m not sure he did. It was really just a second effort play which Wake is capable of making.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Those are mine as well. Add in Seattle had about a 10 minute advantage in TOP. Really frustrating to see NE win without Gronk and Brady against a top defense. I keep hoping every year something changes and maybe this time…getting tired of saying it though. A lot of mistakes you expect from game one but they added up to cost the game.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

the same type of stuff that caused us to lose games when philbin was here.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can’t predict a dropped long TD pass and a blocked FG which was really the plays that could have changed the game. It was a tough hard fought contest on the road against a good team and we left a couple of plays on the field that should have been made. I didn’t view this as a Philbin game. We probably would have lost by two TDs with the old regime.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You definitely caught the right low lights.

And right with you on no QB sneak. Lots of what ifs when you lose by two, but I think if Pouncey was playing yesterday we win.

  15. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The Defense had a heck of a day yesterday…..just ask Bob Condotta, a Seahawks beat reporter for the Seattle Times.
    —————————————————–
That the Seahawks’ offense had its struggles during Sunday’s 12-10 win over Miami is evident in the score alone.

The 12 points was the fewest the Seahawks had scored since a 12-7 win at Carolina to open the 2013 season, and tied for the second-lowest of the Russell Wilson era.

Before the Seahawks scored with 31 seconds left, they were in danger of being held without a touchdown for the first time since a 13-6 loss at San Francisco on Oct. 18, 2012, the seventh game of the Russell Wilson era….

Wilson’s stats are mitigated by the fact he was constantly under pressure and a few times had to throw the ball away.

Wilson’s passer rating of 77.5 was lower than any last season other than a 67.2 in a home loss to Arizona in which Wilson was 14-32 with an interception.

A key reason for the lower passer rating is that the Seahawks averaged just 5.2 yards per pass play. That was also lower than any game last season other than the loss at St. Louis (4.7)…..

Seattle’s 3.5 yards per rush was lower than all but two games last season….

Seattle’s longest run of 12 yards and longest pass of 22 yards each tied the lowest longest runs and and pass plays for one game last season…..

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

They were fantastic until the last drive, but then if the O held up their end that last drive never would have happened (in a time on the field way at least).

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Howard does not look like a rookie CB. He was active all day and showed his tackling prowess with 6. I kept seeing #25 making plays. I think we found a good one. The coaches think they have too.

  17. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    D,
I was referring to that post as well. It wasn’t directed at you. It was directed at the Cameron Wake quote.
As for the rest of your post I don’t agree that any of the players are disrespecting this country or people that died and I don’t understand how sitting down or kneeling quietly is anything BUT respectful. I also don’t see how people are ‘disgusted’ or how it’s ‘shameful’ other than just being overly dramatic. Most people don’t even pay attention to the National anthem, especially when they’re at home, but all of the sudden someone quietly doesn’t stand (which like 1 reporter noticed to begin with by the way) and they’re all fired up.
Players kneeling or sitting doesn’t affect my viewing or my personal moment of reflection. I think a lot of people are getting too caught up in everything else instead of paying attention to the message. The National anthem is a celebration of freedom, but if you look across this country, only certain people enjoy that freedom a disproportionate amount of the time. Black people as a whole don’t get to celebrate or feel that freedom. That’s a truth, no matter the shirt or socks someone wears or the millions of dollars they make to play a game. Kaep and other people aren’t doing this for them. They are doing it for the people who were killed by cops and the cops get a slap on the wrist. They’re doing it to bring to light the lack of justice in these cases, but because it takes away from the mental vacation that football provides, it’s upsetting to people.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The constitution gives them the right to do what they want and other people can have opinions about it. This isn’t north korea where we all have to stand up and clap hands in unison or get flogged.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s a good point and this is just another issue where obviously people do not all think the same.

  18. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    tim,
we’ll see if this team beats philbin’s first year team that went 7-9 with a rookie QB. I have them at 8-8 and they played like an 8-8 mediocre team. Mediocre teams leave plays that could help them win on the table. That’s why their mediocre year in year out. Good teams like seattle, and the pats, make those plays, even when things aren’t going their way, and go to the playoffs.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay, I thought we played toe to toe with a top team in their building and they beat us by 2. I saw a lot of good things in the game that we can build on.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I don’t disagree. I saw a lot of good things as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cool! The OL has to start becoming more physical. Our DL is. We’ve got to give our backs a chance to pick up 3-4 more often, not 0 and -2. That puts you in 3rd and long. We want more 3rd and short. It changes everything. Opens up your entire playbook.

  19. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not even our four guys who had to make a statement could come up with a single one. If you feel the need though…..like the kneel with hand on heart.

  21. drg's avatar drg says:

Another frustrating loss in a long line of them. Positives were secondary seemed to be better than expected. Pass rush was decent and run defense solid. If we get that type of performance from the defense on a regular basis we will be in every game. OL had some good moments, but they struggled with stunts and seemed like James had a rough day. That Stills drop will haunt me this week. Blocked 24 yard FG? Yeeesh…

Really disappointed our defense couldn’t finish that game. It was there for the taking. Tannehill was himself. Solid, gutsy performance without doing anything stupid, but also failing to do anything special. I’ve given up on him ever extending plays or making pass rushers miss. Give him time and he’ll usually make a great throw. He needs a great team around him to get us to the playoffs. If we stay really healthy there’s a chance of that.

I absolutely like the call to go for it on fourth down. Just execute it next time.

BIG game Sunday. Not expecting it, but an upset would be huge for this team. The players seem to believe in Gase and I like him so far. Need a few breakthrough wins to validate what Gase is trying to accomplish.

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kaepernick started the whole thing, and it’s pretty obvious to me and anyone else what he’s protesting against.

Now of course I don’t know for sure that all the other people who have now joined on feel the same way, but ALL cops aren’t bad, and it’s really a small percentage of these cops that have gone and done terrible things. If I was cop, and I saw these protests, especially if I were a cop in an area anywhere close to NYC or the tri state area, I would take major offense to this protest being done on 9/11, when many of these officers put their lives on the line to save people, black, white or otherwise. I think there’s a time and a place for everything.

I’ll admit he hasn’t been the best at getting the message across, but it still doesn’t change the message. I know it does for others, but I’m someone who tries to look past the outside and get to the heart of things.

  23. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I am more upset about losing a close game yesterday than I would have been if we lost by 20. I was expecting a loss. I had predicted a loss.

The reason I am more upset is they did it to me again. They got my hopes up by taking a lead in the 4th and only needing one stop after showing all game that they could shut down the Seattle Offense. Then they reverted to form. Same old dolphins.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Losing by 20 would mean nothing has changed. Many people aren’t sold on the defense but they were the best unit on the field. It was a defensive grudge match and we fell short late. It’s disappointing but nothing to hang your head about, it really isn’t.

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

It was just one game. It was frustrating to see what appeared to be status quo with our offense. I didn’t see anything encouraging other than better pass pro. I thought our safeties played really good. The CBs were just kinda okay. The lbers were very inconsistent. The DL played well, but they were going against a ragtag OL and frankly, I expected more.
    ***
Again, if we can see improvement week to week, I’ll feel better about where this club is going. If our offense can’t start putting more points on the board, all the other shit doesn’t matter. Too many missed opportunities by lots of players on offense.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Give props to Seattle’s defense, there one of the game’s best. It was a defensive game that I don’t think many here thought we could play. So that’s a good sign.

  25. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I almost got into a fight at the bar yesterday. I was sitting at the bar getting some lunch and not even paying attention to the early games and the national anthem came on at the beginning of the Philadelphia game. I had my hands full of BBQ ribs ( sorry piggy they were baby backs) and the guy sitting at the table behind me slapped my Dolphins hat off my head and said show some respect the national anthem is on

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

A few minutes later one of the other games started and they were showing the national anthem for that game the guy was sitting with his hat on so I turned around and got his face and said stand the fuck up and show some respect the national anthem is playing again

Fucknuts wanted to get into it but his three buddies all laughed and said you started it dude

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Many people aren’t sold on the defense but they were the best unit on the field.

I was pleasantly surprised by the play of our LB’s. Misi looked solid as ush, even made some big plays, Alonzo was all over the field and making tackles not whiffs and Jenkins played pretty well. (though I did see him get roasted twice)

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Misi played really well. Alonso does flow to the ball. If you’re expecting a big hitting LB like Harry Carson, that’s not him. He’s a more rangy LB. Jenkins is a solid LB, not special.

If we stay healthy and develop some young guys, our secondary could become a strength.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

In the big scheme of things, this is the least important loss of the season. Nobody expected us to win as we were 10.5 pt underdogs and it’s an NFC game. This game will not effect where we stand at the end of the year. Division and Conference games are key.

Losing by 20 would mean nothing has changed.
    ____________________________________
To me losing the way we did felt as if nothing has changed. This loss was like a microcosm of our team’s existence since 1999. The O fails to score enough points. Good scoring opportunities squandered in painful and obvious ways such as a drop sure fire TD or miss/block of a chip shot FG. The D plays lights out except when it mattered most. The QB was running for his life for half the game. The offensive game plan was full of 2 yard patterns. It was the same script different year.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I forgot. Inopportune time outs called by the coaching staff.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of it was because of Seattle’s defense. You can’t just focus on the Phins, the other team plays too and they happen to be very good and better than us the last 4 years or so. We lost a tough hard fought match against a top team in their building late. It’s not a microcosm of anything to me.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Sorry I can’t find the optimism. My bottom line is we should have won 17-12 or 20-12. Stills drop was inexcusable. The block FG should not happen on a 27 yarder. We find ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s not good enough that we were able to compete with Seattle. We were able to beat them but we gave it away again as usual.

  30. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Look on the bright side. Either the Jets or Bills will be 0-2 after Thursday and we can be in a 1-1 tie if we beat New England.

  31. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How many teams have won in Seattle last 5 years? If we had gotten thE Stills TD, they probably go right down the field and score. You can’t just say, if we had done this… The D looked great, we’ll see what happens next week. I was madder than hell couldn’t watch the end, now take the emotion away.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

And we played with maybe the best team in the NFL in their building, and had a chance to win late. Imagine what their fans were saying during the game, if it was anything like we’d be saying, if the roles were reversed…

  32. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Before the game, did anyone really think we were going to win? Enough to actually make a money line bet? Parker is our break in case of emergency player, we could’ve used him.

  33. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    LMAO Rock.
Luckily i wasnt there with you because I would have told him, “I’m going to show you an All American ass kicking”

  34. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    steve,
100% agree. Parker probably would have been a difference maker for sure. RT had his moments where he couldn’t find people open, especiall inside the 10, and I think late last year RT felt comfortable throwing in traffic to Parker knowing he could make plays in tight coverage.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

How many games do you watch and think, this team scored to quick, giving the other team time to come back and win? It’s really hard to stop any team on that final drive, the rules favor the O too much. Denver couldn’t do it against the Cheats in AFC Title game last year.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Denver couldnt stop Carolina this year at the end, neither could the cheats against the Cards, both got lucky with missed FGs.

  36. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
There were many positives as well out of this game including Vance Joseph’s coordinator debut, Gase HC debut, Carroo’s debut (showed very good technique pushing off the Seattle DB who get away with holding all the time), Howard fighting through contact, Kiko showing up near the top in total tackles (though low solo count). I thought both DE did great job containing Wilson, especially Mario a few times.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Isa coming up with a pick in his first game as a Fins player was nice too

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

VJ was working it, instead of the Coyle dick in his hand mode. I would’ve liked to have seen the D put more pressure on Wilson, once he got hurt. It was like they still expected him to scramble, even though he couldn’t move.

  37. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Steve,
Fins D had Seattle on a 4th and 4 with 2 min to go. That was the game basically; it was just unfortunate the Fins D couldn’t make one last stop and that Baldwin of all people got wide open in the scheme.

Just out of curiosity, do you know exactly WHAT the message is?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I can tell you I do not, but I would like to hear exactly what all these protesters are trying to accomplish, and also, how they think kneeling, or sitting for the national anthem is going to accomplish the goal they are trying to achieve

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

      Mike E,
I can’t speak for SB, but I was reading some of his posts and agree with much of what he says.
The kneel down or stance during the anthem serves to show that things aren’t as peachy as it seems when people partake in a ritual that involves praising the greatness of its society (country).

  39. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m surprised that people aren’t encouraged by the way we played the Seahawks in SEA yesterday. Just because we lost doesn’t mean it’s the same old team. We hung in that game against a very good team, with a star QB, and a great defense, and basically shut down their offense almost the entire day. This really is a different team, and I think it’s a better one. I think the O-line will improve both run blocking and pass protecting, and when the run game improves, the passing game will too. Devante Parker will be back, and we will have a lot of threats on the field for opposing defenses to worry about. I could be wrong, but I also expect Ajayi to really bounce back from his mistake last week.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I’m sure everyone is encouraged. But its disheartning that we lost because we couldn’t make a 26 yard FG. Or stills drops a perfect pass.

IF we’d lost by 20 I wouldn’t be as annoyed because I wasn’t expecting a win. But when we actually had a chance to win and lost because of dumb mistakes, it burns.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If we got blown out yesterday, which was certainly possible, would any of you have been shocked? If our LB’s didn’t tackle, and our CB’s couldn’t cover, would you have been shocked? I wouldn’t have, and I think the defense played a great game, despite the last drive. I think the offense will get better, despite “Tannehill”. He’s not nearly as bad as so many make him out to be. Give him a little time in this offense, and you will be rewarded.

  41. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I just hope we use more people across the board on offense. It seemed like we only tried to use the same 3 people for 3 straight quarters. When we finally got more guys involved then we were able to move the ball better. When the top guys are off their game you need to give others the chance to shine and make a play.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Our TE’s HAVE to start making an impact. The TE is such a great weapon in the NFL, and for some reason, we can’t find a way to use ours. That has to change

Must be the 1PM post. If that’s what they’re trying to do, I agree with that, because it’s unacceptable for that to have happened, but again, a time and a place and awareness makes a big difference. Understanding that the greater majority of policemen, firemen, military are GOOD people, and insulting them with a protest of what they feel symbolizes them is not the best way to do it.

    Watch this video . . .

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

It’s not an insult (only to those who think people should behave a certain way). The timing sucked that 9/11 landed on a Sunday, but the national anthem ritual is not exclusive to those who died on 9/11. The flag does not stand for only 1 thing but for all things American history including stuff that goes on at the police level regarding corruption (which is what the players are taking a stand on for people who don’t have a public voice but are part of the history that the players come from).

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stills dropping a big TD pass is not a knock on the entire team. That’s solely on him. The play was there which is also a good thing because I’m sure not many thought we could beat their secondary deep and we had them beat. Also we punked Earl Thomas quite a few times. It was a competitive game we lost late. It did not look like last year’s team to me at all. With the exception of the OL still not being where it needs to be in all phases. We did allow 5 sacks and did not get good push in the run game.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Al

While I agree with what that, again, as I’ve already said many times, there’s a time and a place. Next week is fine, but they could have skipped 9/11 due to the sensitivity.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

      Mike E,
That’s fine, but in the eyes of those who are taking a stance, they don’t feel they should wait for anything. Their kneeling is during the anthem, the anthem itself isn’t being sung for the purpose of 9/11. I think we tried but it just wasn’t there. SEA were better at it and have been for a long time. They’re a better team then we are and we almost took them down. I can live with that. Being beaten by 20 as some have suggested as making them feel better makes no sense to me. That would have been the same old same old. We lose by at least 2 TDs yesterday with last year’s team.

  47. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think once Gase and staff learn who they have confidence in, what they do well and what they don’t, they will revise what we do based on that. It may take some time. Just get a few wins along the way and don’t put yourself out of it too soon. Maybe it will take 5-6 games, but hang in there.

QB’s are the protected ones in this league, It was a stupid, obvious penalty. There’s no way that doesn’t get called.

      • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Yea I’m not arguing the penalty on Wake but rather the no call (well, what I felt was one) while he was rushing the QB. I thought Wake had his man beat and was pushed down from behind (tackle). Either way, i guess the personal foul call would have overruled a holding call.

  53. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    Tim,
It didn’t look like last years team. That game reminded me of the game we lost to GB 2 years ago. And we finished 7-9 that year.
And dumb mistakes were the drop by stills and missing the FG. It doesn’t matter if one person makes the mistake or the whole team. It still costs the whole team the game and and 1 in the loss column.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A dropped pass and blocked FG is not dumb, it’s part of playing the game. Dumb is taking your helmet off, getting ejected and a penalty. Dumb is grabbing a guys face mask because you can’t control yourself and taking the team out of FG range. That’s not what happened in this game. They beat us with a score after we scored. Good defensive game to the non-bias fan.

  54. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I wasn’t disappointed with the loss….well, I always hate losses…but I expected a loss. What I was hoping NOT to see were issues from last year fast forward to this year. That’s what was disappointing to me. I did not see a different offense. Same plays, same execution, same results. While I thought the defense had a good game and were the reason we even had a chance for a win late, I certainly can’t argue with the issues they continue to have allowing big plays…and at opportune times….including fading late.
    ***
Again, for me, the difference is that the defense played well enough to win. The offense wasn’t even close, and I don’t think it was because Seattle just played great defense. They didn’t. It always comes down to a few plays here and there….usually late in games. We rarely seem to make them. Missed block, dropped pass, bad throw, bad coaching….take your pick. I don’t even care anymore. I just want it to stop. Lol
    ***
But, again, it’s just one game. Let’s see where this team goes.

If you want to talk about complementary football the defense didn’t do it’s job up by 4 late 4th qtr. Need a stop there and the game is over. The offense scored the first TD of the game in crunch time. The defense gave it right back.

It was a tough game and a throwback game. It really doesn’t bother me and this won’t be the worst lost we could have.

it one thing to give Howie your wishful intentions

We were supposed to lose this one

I’m probably more upset by things like the Stills drop, the failure to defend the final drive, the failure to score more than 10 points, the final drive which looked like shit, the blocked kicked, the Wake penalty …the bonehead stuff

Do you think Seattle has a lot of the same sentiments on what they could have should have done? It’s not a one-way street. Two teams played the same tough game all day and they got us by 2. It’s not a horrible loss. It’s a frustrating one and it’s not a bad playoff race loss.

I can’t imagine what would be said if we lost 34-10. LOL

That would also be a knock on the roster that we can’t even compete. Let’s be realistic. Seattle was worried with 4 minutes to go.

  60. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The fact of the matter is we continue to hope that we win these types of games on a consistent basis, but other teams like the Seahawks, Packers, and Pats regularly do this, and that is why they are perennial playoff teams. EVERY loss is a bad loss. These are the types of games that continuously pile up over the course the last 8 years or so that bite us in the ass come playoff contention time. 67. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I don’t think it was a great defensive struggle and a gritty game by both teams that went down to the wire. I thought it was a pretty poorly played game by every unit except our defense….and yes, I understand they still gave up a TD late. It was an ugly game with lots of mistakes and bad plays. I didn’t come away feeling good about the team because they played great and simply lost to a team who played even better. It wasn’t that sort of game. It was a very sloppy game where each offense made a big play late. That’s about it.

    —————————————————-
Pretty much my list as well though i think the Wake thing was bad circumstance. I think he had just been tackle and he tried to get up and make an explosive play and he landed his tackle a bit late. It was a penalty, no doubt about it, but the right tackle dragging him to the grounfrom the side also was a penalty. Im more mad at the missed call on their side, the penalties should have offset.

Grant i think is just engrained from PS where he was returning everything i think thats a rookie mistake that will be fixed. He had some pretty returns to offset that one but yeah it cost us.

The Baldwin catch was also a rookie mistake. Howard missed his assignment and it left Baldwin wide open.

Gase did have a couple miscues too, again, first time HC and he blew a couple calls, he also went very conservative in the first 3 quarter. It was almost like he got on his set up play list and just forgot to call the plays that he had spent so much tinme setting up. Then he finally gets to it and it was a little too late.

Still just has no excuse for that drop. That was ione of Tanny's best deep passes and it should have been a score. We kinda came ungluesd offensively for a while after. It got into the mind of Tanny and he was second guessing his trows after that point.

  72. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    D,
The thing about the 4th and inches that killed me was that the Fins lined up and were set before Seattle D was even set and they didn’t even run the play immediately. These are things the Pats do repeatedly and are always ready for it…They line up fast in those situations and Brady just snaps the ball and shoots a gap without even thinking about it when the D is not set.

  73. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I think I can tell the differed between a well played game and a not so well played game. You’re making it sound like we played well and just lost to a better team. We didn’t. Dropped passes, missed reads, bad throws, missed blocking assignments. Our offense did not execute well yesterday. That has to start changing if we ever want to get back into the playoffs.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I never said it was a perfectly played game, I said tough and it was. Seattle played the same game. I enjoy these types of grudge matches where teams play defense instead of 39-35.

Didn’t you have us losing by like 10? We almost pulled off the upset. Not all football games are played with excellent play in all phases.

The next game has way more significance.

  74. D's avatar D says:

Im still in complete disagreement with you guys on the standing vs kneeling thing, and im not just upset about it being 9/11. It is disresepctful and it is aimed at this country, and no Al this country isnt the reason for the issues we are having, this country does not promote police violence against people of any race. This country should not therefore be the target. If you disagree it is, then why chose the singing of our national anthem and the generally accepted method for honoring it, to make your alterations and your “stand” this bullshit started because Kaepernick wanted to make his point, and i think its quite obviousl what his point is. The rest of these guys are said to be emulating his statement, by copying it, so it is about what we think it is and this bullshit has to stop. There were other demonstrations with a raised fist was held up at the singing of the anthem on 9/11, again i dont care if its next sunday or the next or the next, its disrespectful and it promotes divisiveness.

SB7 you say you try to look deeper. What do you think im doing? Do you think i just dont like protest or the “cause” they are “fighting” for? I call things as they are and i look for real solutions, and this is not a solution. Im not so sure there arent alterior motives as well. Jelani Jenkins posted a tweet before the game that Kaepernick’s jersey sales have skyrocketed since he started his protest. Why retweet that? Why does jersey sales mean anything if your motivation is making a social statement?

Wires are all crossed right now and i think a lot of people are being manipulated. You fight the issue with the police, unified as a society against an injustice. You go in unified, you come out victor. Whats more unified, a group of men from different background and races standing together, or seeing people sit during the national anthem which just makes people like me who love this country more angry. Trust me nothing about what Kaepernick or any of the other have done kneeling has moved me nearly as much as Seattle statement. They got the same point across and without the divisiveness that comes from copying someone and his personal statement.

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I know. Our OL wasn’t good yesterday. But, I did see improvement over the last few years. It most definitely wasn’t good enough. But, I saw Tannehill with plenty of time to go to alternate receivers a number of times yesterday because the pocket was there. I also think we saw what a true professional RB can do to help his OL. The running game wasn’t consistent enough, but I thought it looked better yesterday than it has in awhile. Again, not nearly consistent enough…but I thought I saw improvement overall. Now it’s up to them to build on this and continue to get better each week.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I said earlier I expect it to get better. These guys are all learning each other. This isn’t the same team exactly as last year in a lot of ways. I think they need a few games but we need a couple of wins along the way so we don’t fall too far behind.

      Go Phins!!!

    • D's avatar D says:

Our OL was pretty solid. There were a couple misses but one sack was coverage sack, one was just perfect blitz call, we had no one to pick him up. RB was on a route, and all linemen had other players. Thats the beauty of the double A blitz, its hard to stop, you have to dump off as soon as you see it, or audible out.

Tunsil got blown up on one delayed blitz for sure. He didnt have an assignmnet guy so he was supposed to pick up blitz in his gap. He looked inside and when he did Wagner blew by him. He didnt have enough time to pick him up. Mistake for not being use to OG, LT’s always look inside when they dont have a guy, he did that same thing and thats when he got exploited.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

5 sacks, multiple hits after passes and 20-64 rushing. D, seriously? Every big down 2nd and 7 or 3rd and 6 or whatever, a LB or safety along with DL blew up the backfield before the play ever got off.

I understand it though. No Pouncey who may never be the same with the hip issues, a young new center in Steen, a rookie LG in Tunsil and a vet Bushrod playing G and on the right side for the first time. I’m also guilty of naming James as a core guy when he’s still going through a learning curve. He got his lunch handed to him a few times. Albert is our best OL and rarely is RT getting blind-sided. The interior is still the main issue.

  81. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Who gave Tannehill the time to throw that deep pass to Stills that he dropped? Who gave Tannehill the time to throw that pass to Stills in the end zone that should have been an easy TD but he missed the throw? Who blocked the way for Tannehill to run it in for the TD? It wasn’t all bad with the OL yesterday. There was improvement.

I thought our OL was improved. However, I can’t call their performance yesterday a good one. There were too many missed assignments and the movement they were getting in the running game wasn’t great. I give them a little bit of a pass…very little…because we had 2 new starters(one a rookie) and a backup at center, which is crucial. But, 5 sacks and about 3 yards a carry isn’t gonna get it done. So, as I said, improvement but still a work in progress.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think that was an easy throw

but watching the throw that Wilson made to take the lead, you can see what was lacking in that throw

  90. D's avatar D says:

First sack was a delayed twist and there was no one in the middle to pick him up. Tunisl had his guy, Alberts guy ran back around through the A gap and came up between Steen who had a guy and Tunsil who had a guy. Second one was on Tunisl, the one i mentioned above with Wagner blitzing on a delay and he was looking inside and missed the pickup. Third was on Albert, who just missed his guy on an inside move.4th and 5th were both from Tanny scrambling, one where he went out of bounds behind the line which counts as a sack, but it was a rollout where he just kept running and instead of getting rid of it got pushed out of bounds. 5th of course was the next to last play where he got stripped but was able to get it down before the ball went out of bounds.

Two of those were really on the OL guys. First was a coverage sack, Tanny probably should have escaped or fired that shit into the stands in the direction of one of the receivers. Last two were Tanny trying to make something happen when he didnt have anything, again, he should have thrown those away. I really think on that last one he forgot the down they were on because he acted like it was 3rd down and he needed to get some yards. Next to last one it was 3rd down and we did need a TD, he was just trying to get it and got pushed out.

There was one QB hit that was rough, and it was on an A gap blitz and no one was there to pick him up. I first remembered that as a sack but it was a hit, Tanny did get rid of it.

  91. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Or maybe the throw he missed late in the game to a wide open WR. That play, if completed, could have changed the whole complexion of the game and given us a shot to set up a FG. OL did their job. WR did his. Tannehill didn’t, and it cost us a shot to win the game.

Why is it we hear absolutely nothing about these plays around here today? Yeah, Tannehill fairness. Lol

Stiop looking at stats Tim. They arent your friend. See above. 3 of the 5 sacks were not on the OL. The rushing game looked like poor design, we ran right at their strengths. They show you why wide 9 is so effective if you have good LB’s. Its hard to run against. The rushing attack was decent, wasnt bad, we could have exploited it more if we had a more complex game plan. Very very vanilla. Steen was actually one of the better guys. Bushrod was the one gettign beat most the time but Albert and Tunsil had some break downs, and a couple times, even though James rode him way behind the pocket, he was getting tested on that side as well.

    Piggy,
It’s a throw that should be made…and a miss that cost us points. And I said “relatively easy”. He is a professional QB. That wasn’t a difficult throw. The guy was open. The pass was not accurate.

Randy they werent getting it done with the up the gut runs, but damn they have the best MLB in the game, abnd he was killing us. They should have tried more outside runs, Steen, James and Tunsil were getting to the second level with their blocks when we did it, we hade opportunity there but we went ruight back to 0 and 1 Dive.

  95. D's avatar D says:

Tim seriously, if you dont believe me go back and watch it again. I promise you if you are objective you will see that there were 2 OL breakdowns for sacks, 2. Not 5.

Our best OL was probably James overall, but was really close between he and Steen. Albert and Tunsil both had ok games but not great. Bushrod was the weakest link and was not great.

    D,
I thought Foster bailed the OL out a handful of times by making something out of nothing. I do agree we didn’t attack the edges often enough, but the OL still wasn’t getting a lot of movement when it mattered. Sometimes getting to the second level is at the cost of not blocking the first level well enough. I’d like to see better combination blocks that lead to the second level. Again, I’m not down on them, but I can’t say it was a good performance. They weren’t the reason we lost, but there’s plenty of room for improvement.

No they didnt move people out off the line but agian, Seattle showed no respect for our passing game, they blitzed so much we should have made adjustments and burned them

  97. D's avatar D says:

Big deal is Seattles D blitzed LB’ers over and over and over creating odd man out scenarios, we could block everyone. We never compensated with TE across the LB zone, or slipping a Rb behind the line. They had a better defensive gameplan to match our offense and the vanilla setup we ran.

    D,
Teams have been playing us this way for 5 years. I said this is what they’d do to us earlier in the week because everyone does. Teams know. Press the LOS. Force Tannehill to make quick reads, give up the short stuff and they know we can’t sustain drives well enough to score. Lots of times our OL has no shot just because they’re playing 5 on 6 or worse.
