Participation Trophy

He didn’t even have to ask, it was obvious something happened between them in the Ladies room (hair out of place, smeared lipstick, tossed clothes), after all he was the one who introduced Brenda to Erika.

“Ok we can leave now, take us back to your place”, Brenda said to him as they approached.

Being the gentleman he is he politely opened the door for them and escorted them to his car.

“You’ll get a participation trophy tonight”, Brenda whispered to him as he opened the car door.

Whoa hold-on, wait a minute-wrong blog!

A Sonny Postmortem

Excuse me, that  wasn’t supposed to be on here, that was for something else…

But now that you mention it – Should the Dolphins get a participation trophy for making the playoffs this year?nhhahwq

How about a proverbial trophy, or is it just an atta-boy.

Don’t make me list all of the accomplishments of this season, I know we started 1-4 and then a firecracker went off in the teams ass, they were pumping out wins so fast no one had time to notice the injuries piling up, the young players maturing but also struggling, a coaching staff taking hold with a clear direction, followed by consequences when someone tries their own direction. We just kept winning, it was glorious.

So what are we left with?forrest-gump17

Are good or are we lucky?

I don’t know if we each have a destiny, or if we’re all just floatin’ around accidental-like on a breeze. But I, I think maybe it’s both. – Forrest Gump

Are we better because we made the playoffs or are we better and made the playoffs?

I think a solid core is emerging that will lead this team to become a perennial playoff contender no matter how bitter yesterday’s loss was. I think in large part it starts with Jarvis Landry, it starts there and spreads through guys like Wake and Suh, Albert and Pouncey followed by a host of 1-3 yr players. We’ve had some decent success in the draft recently and we’re beginning to see it evolve. Injuries took their toll on a fragile roster and clearly defined the cracks that need to be addressed and that will be discussed profoundly over the next several months.

092616 Dolphins wi 20

So we enter at least this post season with a bit of a hop in our step for at least participating in the playoffs. Equal growth into next season would make the 2017 Dolphins pretty formiddable.

If you want to crown ’em – crown ’em

They’re who we thought they were…

Adam Gase

Thanks Coach Gase. You gave us hope what more could we ask for.

Tim, i think we will get a 6th at least for Matthews, but lets say you are right and its a seventh (not that the difference in a 6th and 7th would be that big a deal in grand scheme of things). Then that means we would have:

    1P22 Derek Barnett DE Tenn
    2P22 Ethan Pocic OC/OG LSU
(3P22 was traded in the Caroo trade)
    3P35ish Kendell Beckwith ILB LSU
    4P22 Cole Hikutini TE Lousiville
(4P35ish was traded in the Caroo trade)
    5P22 Channing Stribling CB Michigan
    6P22 Tyrus Bowser DE Houston
7P22 Weston Steelhammer S Air Force
    7P35ish Eric Wilson LB Cincy

Wake and Barnett could rotate on LDE, with Barnett and flipping to RDE when Wake and they go to pure pass rush packages. RDE would be Branch and Fede, except when they rotate out and Barnett comes in. Bowser would develop at RDE, hopefully getting some rotational snaps in.

Pocic could play LG, if it looks like Albert may not be back, otherwise he could play RG and give us an upgrade at that position, and he could be backup/starting caliber insurance at OC for Pouncey. We retain Steen to back up at OG and OC. We keep Bushrod to back up at OG or OT. This gives an OL that not only is more solid at the top level, but also at the second level. This should also allow ofr any combination of injuries without losing continuity. Also if its the case we think we may transition away from Albert at LT and move Tunsil there, then i would also look to get a OG in FA, someone like Kevin Zeitler.

Beckwith comes in and gives us a true MLB, kick Alonzo out to WLB, if we get an LB in FA, someone like Collins or Kevin Minter, to man the SLB, we have a really solid LB corp, retaining Jelani to be a backup passing downs LB, would give us solid depth to go with players like Paysinger, and Hewitt who are also ST contributors.

Cole Hikutini would be a nice upgrade over Cameron as a receiving option, as well as a good compliment to Sims in double TE packages. He would be an instant plug into the offense to give Tanny another weapon.

Stribling could compete with Howard, Lippett and Maxwell for the 2 outside CB spots, 3rd man gets the slot, leaving the 4th to backup along with Bobby Mccain and Lucas.

Weston Steelhammer would be a backup safety prospect, of course but i think he would be better than the backups we have there. I think we would wind up keeping he, Isa, Jones, Thomas, Aikens mostly because of his ST play, and possibly Rambo if they decided to keep 6. If not i believe he would be good enough to make the team on the PS.

Obviously Wilson would be a long shot to make the team, but its possible he could make it as one of the backups, kicking Hull, Hewitt or Paysinger off the team, or himself going to the PS.

I think that would be address most the holes and at the very least id feel like this team would have a better chance to keep playing at a winning level with injuries, and likely be able to have the depth needed and potential studs to elevate our game play, and maybe have another year to test ourselves against the best in the playoffs.

Good stuff. What you think of Taco Charlton? He looks the part but needs polishing.
    —————————————-
Im warming up to him. His technique isnt great, but he has power and speed to get to the QB, definitely needs some polish, but has a lot to work with. I think he benefited a lot by playing next to some good players and didn’t get double-teams a lot. Im liking him a lot more than Carl Lawson though, because Lawson looks to take plays off, he does put full effort every snap and for the most part Charlton does. Barnett is superior to both though. I didnt realize, this until i was going back and reviewing him, but Barnett broke Reggie Whites team record for sacks in a career at UTenn. 33 sacks, pretty impressive.

    • D's avatar D says:

Initially i had Barnett/Charlton in that DE spot, again id prefer Barnett, but Charlton is pretty good. Bryan Cox Jr is also a really good prospect, he is a really high motor guy, solid athletic traits, maybe not as good as Charltons, but his motor is relentless.

  31. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    son,
I think when you ignore the playoff appearance and start looking at how this team performed week-to-week….I have my doubts. We struggled to be really good at just about anything. We had an average offense and a below average defense. We were one of the most penalized teams(coaching). We struggled on 3rd down on both sides of the ball…particularly bad on offense. We had very few big plays on offense and gave up a ton on defense on big downs. We were a middle of the pack scoring offense and defense. I know nobody wants to hear it, but I still think our record is a reflection of wins against a bunch of terrible teams. While a win’s a win in getting to the playoffs, I think it does matter when evaluating the team’s overall performance.
    ***
So, just how good were we? I don’t think we were above average if you start pulling apart the numbers and evaluating our performances objectively. I hope our coaches/players don’t let a playoff apppearance go to their heads because I believe there is still a LOT of work to be done for us to be a legitimate playoff contender. I like how Gase goes about his business, so I’m hopeful we’ll continue to grow.

I think you’re right on just about everything Randy. We ran the ball extremely well when we had our starting 5, and then just eh to well when we didn’t. That’s really what we did best. We were opportunistic and made plays on defense in some games to get us a win, or ST’s saved our ass, but there wasn’t really any category that we were much better than average in except rushing.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We made plays over and over with the game on the line. To most people that’s more important than yards and point differential.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

There were plenty of games where we struggled to not only score but also move the ball. We have to get more consistent on offense and of course we have to get healthy and reinforced on defense. A winning attitude ipays dividends but I agree there is work still to be done.

Great job tonight on this article! I do think making the playoffs means something, even if we got clobbered in the actual game. It was unfair of any of us to expect much more from what we had going into that game.

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Steve,
Sorry, I usually just make up my own stats. It’s easier that way. I think the only thing we were good at was running the ball, but if you look at it on a game-to-game basis and not just the final yardage…we were very inconsistent doing that too.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The passing game was really good at important times. I heard a stat in one of our last games that our 3rd down D was beat in the league.

  39. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    MikeE,
I agree. Gase is the first coach I have felt good about in, well, decades, really. The penalty thing bugs me. It always suggests an undisciplined team to me, but I think Gase will get that straightened out too once the roster settles in. My posts may not make it seem like it, but I do have hope moving forward.

*No 7th rd picks, we traded both (one comp) to move up in the 5th and 6th. We had to trade some picks away. LOL

Something like this. We also use FA to bolster the roster. I think the team will sign a couple of big players in FA (DE and LB – I think that’s going to happen), but mostly look for some FAs without breaking the bank who have some NFL experience to be role players. The same types of players you draft in the mid and late rounds, but with more NFL experience. We have a lot of young players like that already learning as they go. We don’t need more green, we need more game ready.

Now that Gase and his staff along with the personnel dept. have a season and some tape on the team, I expect a major charge at eliminating weaknesses. We’re going to see a very competitive TC in 2017.

As I was writing this he makes a big hit

This was set from the start. Let bama win if you can. It is the best for ratings. At least make the calls equal so we don’t see how fake it is

Hilarious moment leaving the stadium. Walking down the street. Some steeler fan is being obnoxious. Getting in my face. So I flipped him off. Then he’s trying to say he’s sorry but not in a genuine tone. And that’s when he walked into a lamppost. I saw it coming. Could have warned him. But I didn’t. Lol

    So did Moore!
Shame our season ended like that. The only plus about getting knocked out is it wasn’t the Pats who did it.
Well done for making the trip Herd. Tip of the cap to you.

GREATEST FINISH to a college championship game EVER!! Congrats to Dabo Swinney and his Tigers for beating Darth Vader!! –Winning TD pass with 1 second left was EPIC!!!

DID OLD FART FFR wimp out and miss the ending?? Well I hope he at least got a good night’s sleep!! I’d say he “got his beauty rest” but, believe me, FFR’s no beauty no matter HOW much sleep he gets!!

Good article, SON! But no trophies for getting blown out in the wild card round!! –Ross is STILL the only owner in Fins history to have NEVER WON A PLAYOFF GAME. Maybe next season.

It’s never ALL about stats, but stats do mean something, they show you strengths and weaknesses in certain areas, but of course, they have to be taken in context along with everything else. I don’t consider points scored and points allowed as stats, but we were -17 on the year, and if you add in the playoff game, -35. We won a lot of games even when we didn’t play well, and that’s a very good sign going forward. Finding ways to win is often a reflection of the HC, rather than finding ways to lose. That’s where the future is brightest.

  90. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Randy the prophet calls it as game ends on a pick play.

  91. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

    Here’s some stats:
    Dolphins in the playoffs
    Alabama losing the national championship

It’s been a pretty good year

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Year after year, almost all of the playoff teams are either top 10 in offense or defense, and the ones that that make it to the SB are almost certainly in on one or the other. Very rarely does it not happen that way, so statistics mean something, along with other intangibles.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve never said stats don’t mean anything, I’ve said you can’t just take some random stat and base your opinion off of it. As Lou pointed out Moore had pretty good stats on Sunday, but if you watched him play, it was less than stellar.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Moore played pretty well. The fumbles were rough, but he earned my respect getting up and getting back in there after that vicious hit. He made a few very good throws, and a couple not so good ones. Heck, Ben got 2 TD’s and a ton of yardage on 1 screen, and 1 short pass to AB.

NFLDraftscout (CBS) has the Saints taking Reuben Foster #11. I guess that means they’re keeping Anthony at the SAM, although maybe rang doesn’t care either way.

  95. D's avatar D says:

    Just having some fun.🙂

    1. DE Taco Charlton 6-5 270, Michigan
    2. LB Jordan Davis 6-1 240, Florida
    3. (comp) TE Jordan Leggett 6-5 260, Clemson
    4. (comp) OG Isaac Asiata 6-3 325, Utah
    5. OG Danny Isidora 6-4 310, Miami
    6. SS/LB Xavier Woods 5-11 220, Louisiana Tech

*No 7th rd picks, we traded both (one comp) to move up in the 5th and 6th. We had to trade some picks away. LOL

Tim, 4 is a regular pick, our trade was conditional on us getting a 4th supplemental pick. If we get the supplemental pick, we traded that pick, if not they get our real 4th. So under the scenario oyu have, we have

1, 2, 3comp, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7comp….. which i see what you are saying maybe a small move up in the 5th and 6th trading our 5th and our 6th along with those 7ths. Id keep the 7th personally, give a guy with potential a shot, vs a small upgrade in talent in those previous rounds. If it mean i got a guy i really wanted, sure, but i doubt the 7th would be enough to move up significantly.

    • D's avatar D says:

      Also its Jarrad Davis lol….

You picks are all solid picks, i like the target for positions and the round you selected them in. Leggett moved up BIG in my book as far as a TE prospect, and im pretty sure he will in others, him in the 3rd would be very good.

  96. D's avatar D says:

Reuben Foster could be an OLB in the pros. He was a 3-4 ILB in college, but he has the speed and size to rush the passer. I think he is a MLB in a 4-3, but he easily could play OLB in a 4-3 as well. If i were Saints id keep anthony, move him back to MLB and use Foster as a flex OLB, and just position him on whichever side of the ball was the wide side of the field.

    • D's avatar D says:

Foster has a TON of flexibility for systems in the pros, 3-4 OLB or ILB and 4-3 SLB, WLB, or MLB. Due is just really instinctual, fast and powerful.

Ryan anderson really showed up well too. I know how good this guy is and i was hoping he would slide in a little under the radar going into the combine. IMO, he and Tim Williams are damn near equal in ability.

      • D's avatar D says:

Mika Fitpatrick showed up like he normally does, either on fire or really off…. too bad for Bama it wa an off night. I think Humphreys hurt his draft stock too, Mike Williams had him owned on some plays. The Nickle back they had out there, and their safeties just couldnt hold up the Leggett, Williams or Renfrow.

Ben Boulware may not be ideal for a 3 down LB but that due plays with fire. Id be ok with selecting him in the draft too as a mid round guy. He could anchor the MLB spot and we could rotate someone like Jenkins in on passing downs.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

According to the article Lou posted, the Saints don’t think he has the smarts to play MLB (Anthony)

      • D's avatar D says:

I read the article, im not sure though any of that came directly from the Saints, it seemed to be an opinion piece. Im sure Gase knows, through Vitt what the deal with him is.

      • D's avatar D says:

Kiko isnt all that football smart imo either. He does not get his pre or initial post snap reads very fast. It takes him just a little bit and thats why he is usually not meeting the guy in the gap he is meeting his blocker, or trying to tackle him after a decent gain.

      • It wasn’t MLB. It was SOLB. He did extremely well at MLB in his first season as a rookie but when they moved him to SOLB that’s where his struggles began. Anthony was actually making the defensive calls in his rookie season.

  97. D's avatar D says:

IMO this is what happened with the draft guys out there.

Watson ++, he showed up like Wilson 2.0, with better size and athletic traits. He hasnt done that all year this year but with what he is showing, and the lack of other talent i think he is a lock in the first, and probably early.

Jordan Leggett +++ huge game for him, dude was almost unstoppable, he did some really smart pro like things too. He is definitely a lower first, to early second rounder now.

Hunter Renfrow +++, he could come out this year, i dont think he will, and dont think he should but NE is going to be all over this guy. They may be all over Leggett too. I could see them using a 1st on him.

  98. D's avatar D says:

I cant see Jabril Peppers lasting that long, i could see us taking him but i would bet it would be as a pur S prospect, or IF we shifted to a package with a nickle LB, he might play that role.

  99. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL @ D on Jarrad not Jordan. I think it was Jordan Leggett that had me repeating the name.

  100. D's avatar D says:

Players like were out on that field last night are guys you want on your team. They go all out, every play. They never count themselves out of anything. They ramp up the intensity despite the game turning down around them. I can say there are a bunch of players i saw last night id welcome having even if the position they play is a position we have a surplus in. Thats good footballers.
