Davon Godchaux #56 – RD 5 Pick #178

22705414-mmmain

The Dolphins went back to defense, after selecting 3 defensive players in a row to start the draft with Harris, McMillan and Tankersley, then going offense with OG Isaac Asiata, it was DT Davon Godchaux who was chosen by Miami at pick #178.

Godchaux was a 3 YR starter at LSU, playing in 35 games.  Godchaux finished up an impressive Junior season with 62 tackles (24 solo), 8.5 TFL, 1 PD, 6.5 sacks, and 2 FR’s.

Zierlein from NFL.com projected Godchaux to go between RD 2-3, but that obviously didn’t happen.  Godchuax has good explosion, but at the moment, that’s his best quality.  He’s a little undersized, underpowered, and not very instinctive.  He’s going to have a lot of learning to do to be anything but a guy who is part of the rotation, and he’s also going to have to be dedicated in the gym.  Short arms and 18 reps for an NFL DT isn’t gonna cut it.  Still, Davon has potential, so it’s on our coaches to bring that out.  Godchaux did improve his bench press to 22 reps at the LSU pro day, so there’s hope.

Good news for Godchaux is right now, we don’t have that much depth behind Suh and Phillips, so his competition at the moment is Lawrence Okoye, and fellow draft mate Vincent Taylor.  Okoye, BTW hasn’t played a game in the NFL, but brings some interesting measurables to the table.  At the 2013 Central Florida Pro Day Okoye at 6’6″ 304 ran a 4.78 40, (10 YD split of 1.67), 36″ vertical, 10.7″ broad jump, along with putting up 30 reps on the bench press.  Maybe even more impressive, a seemingly impossible 3 cone of 6.68.  At 6’6″ 304 lbs?  That’s insanity!  Oops, this article is about Godchaux!

The Dolphins need Godchaux to grow into a good NFL player, they really can’t spend anymore $$$ on the DT position, with Suh, and Phillips eventually due for a payday or his release after 2018, depending on which way his arrow is pointing.  Hopefully, Godchaux can live up to his potential, and be a contributor in our defense, and not someone to just give Suh or Phillips a breather.

GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!

Nada. Just sitting at the smoker, smoking some shrimp. Figured I would see what’s shakin’.

    • stangerx says:

Sounds like you and Chef Warren have a talk about smokers coming up at the Fest. He just explained to me how he turned from a fired one to an electric one that you throw a few chips into that can just walk away till he gets back from work. Also some kinda trade offs involved that were way above my head but guessing not yours.

      • pheloniusphish says:

I look forward to exchanging notes with him.

I still like my fired one. More work and not as consistent as an electric, but I am a glutton for punishment. I would like to build a no shit smokehousesome day. I still need to finish my curing box, too. Have all the pieces but haven’t put it together. Come hunting season I’m going to want to cure some game pastrami and sausage.

    • Tim Knight says:

      Nice!

  2. Mike E. says:

    Smoked shrimp, eh?

  3. pheloniusphish says:

Yep…and I just overcooked them. Still tasty, but hard to peel. Oh well, it was an experimental batch so now I know.

  4. Tim Knight says:

Cool article about the potential of our top 3 WRs. These 3 along with Ajayi and Thomas could be the makings of a juggernaut offense. 🙂

let’s hope J.Landry never ever has to play cornerback for us. He was at charity function with a optimist 12-13 yr olds and he was burned badly by a wr faking a down and out and up and the kid beat him by 5-7 yards. It showed his expression and it looked liked he was really embarrassed. It’s was on tv cbs4 local station sports yesterday.

    GDP and Son,

    This one’s for y’all! I think you’ll dig it!

If you’d like to hear where A. Doulos and I came from (Mr. Ill and I were both born in Western Philly)… pretty dark music, yet TIGHT.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…

      • Tim Knight says:

There’s another one. I posted that because after some really gloomy weather in May into early June it finally broke into some beautiful 70-80 degree days and now we’re in the low 90s with a beautiful breeze. 🙂

      • stangerx says:

Well you have hotter weather than we do down here……and sort of glad we are just in the 80’s. Liked that vid though. All the guys in suits and girls dancing together…..different times. And one real hot blond in the days before gyms.

  7. The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

Are you going to jersey shore again this summer ?

    • Tim Knight says:

No for the most part. Our house is gone. It’s not the same anymore. Next year we will regroup, but right now none of us are feeling it. 😦

Did anybody see Aaron Judge’s 496-foot HR today? DAMN!!!!!!!!!! Talk about a ‘MOON SHOT’!!! I haven’t seen a ball hit like that since Canseco/McGwire (*BASH BROTHERS*)!!!

So i watch “Notorious” over the weekend and i think once before that, but i was in the mood driving in for some B.I.G so oi loaded in the soundtrack and i heard a line from his rap “Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade” and i was like wtf, B.I.G died in like 97, 9/11 didnt happen until 2001. Kinda freaked me out. Apparently they also sensor out this line from radio play making it the only case of retroactive censorship ever. Again, i know thats probably out of the context of what B.I.G’s lyrics meant, but still its kind of spooky.

  10. D says:

While looking things up about that line, i found that Busta Ryhmes also had a predictive lyric, his might be even spookier.

“None of you n—-s really wanna war / The type to fly a plane into your building in the name of Allah.”

    That was release in 98

  11. naplesfan2010 says:

So do we carry only 3 TEs this year on the 53? It’s ok by me. Gray proved he can be trusted and he can sub for either the blocking or receiving TE. Put the 2 kids on the PS.

Let’s say Gray will be better than last year, Sims replaced by Fasano is a wash, Thomas is a huge upgrade over Cameron if he plays the whole year, just because Cameron didn’t.

Sooo … TE 2017 > 2016. And this is a very important position for the 3 weak spots on offense: 3rd down conversions, passing (esp. Red Zone) TDs, and overall total points.

  12. Tim Knight says:

D, the WTC had a bombing in 1993.

    • D says:

Yeah, that seems to maybe be the inspirtation for what BIG was talking about, i forgot about that. Still the lyrics by Busta… i just dunno i can see how conspiracy theorist can jump on things like that and really run with them, im not a believe in all of that but its spooky regardless.

  13. D says:

Mike what i like about the article is that his success or failures wont be from lack of trying. I harp on this a lot with my team at work, dont let you be what makes you fail. Dont let lack of effort be why you didn’t reach your goal, and don’t tell yourself you shouldn’t do something in effort to be the best unless someone comes along and give you better method for reaching the same goal. Finally, no is the worst thing that you can be told, and even that isnt final, it may just mean you have to go back, work harder and approach that situation from both a different angle and with more ammunition to make the case for what you are asking for.

Looks to me Harris at least get a good portion of things like that and those guys usually make it, combine that with his athletic gifts and its hard to even judge what kind of ceiling this kid has, because he is still moving it at the moment.

    • Mike E. says:

Absolutely. Desire is a huge part of success. The best really want to do as best as they can. They hunger for it.

  14. Tim Knight says:

When we drafted Harris I felt like that was the type of player the Steelers would draft in the later 1st rd as a playoff team. No reaching or trading up, just let the BPA fall to you. Maybe our fortunes really are changing. 🙂

  15. D says:

Man the Jets are racking up the publicity this off-seasons arent they. Starts out with cutting all yourplayers in what seems to be an obvious move to tank the season, and now you got a guy who just beat the crap out of a guy for spilling champagne on him, busted the guy up so bad he is having to have numerous plates put into his face to re-construct the damages.

  16. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Definitely a Steelers or Ravens type of player, but he’s ours!

    • Tim Knight says:

      Yep! 🙂

    • D says:

He seems like an old school Dolphins player to me. Back when we had the Killer B defense, or the no name defense, these were guys who dominated through high levels of effort, and not a lot of stature that they were given, even though they did eventually earn a lot.

      • D says:

Our defense was never known for the players on it, its was known for how those players played outside their worth on paper. Harris seems a lot like one of those guys, i dont think he will get anything given to him, but hopefully in the end we will have him on that top players all time list. He seems like he is off to the right start for that.

  17. The Flying Pig says:

If you think you are having a bad day, think about this guy

  18. Tim Knight says:

I’m a bit late on this, but for those of you who remember, this would have been Sam’s 18th birthday today. Happy Birthday Sam!!!! Fly buddy!!!

    Happy Birthday Sam!

That dude from piggies post was literally full of shit, and that doctor was holding on to a lot of shit from his past.

  23. Mike E. says:

Speaking of skeletons in their closet, where the hell is FFR?

    • D says:

FFR doesn’t just have a closet for his skeletons, he up-sized to a walk in changing room to accommodate all of them..

  24. Tim Knight says:

Charles Harris was once again impressive today. Really liking what I’m hearing about him.

    • stangerx says:

Dude has some moves and a quick burst at least. Really looking forward to see what happens with him and Wake on each side on 3rd and 5.

      • Tim Knight says:

His all business attitude and work ethic wanting to be great is also very impressive.

But yes, can’t wait to see him in games opposite Wake. I could also see us using him like we did with an OLB standing up on the weak side in a 5-2 or 4-2 nickel.

    • D says:

Not trying to rain on the parade, but DE’s generally do look pretty good in shorts and shirts. Its nice to see he is putting forth the effort though, and im sure when the pads come on, since his game is based around speed he will still be showing out, but it will be more fair once Tunsil is able to hit back.

      • Tim Knight says:

I’m going by what everyone is saying about him – reporters, coaches and teammates. He’s impressing everyone. But yes what he does in games will be the real evaluation.

      • stangerx says:

Some DE’s look better in shorts than others though….all about styling it.

  25. stangerx says:

Guess not a surprise at all, but Beasley confirms.

“It’s looking all but certain now that center Mike Pouncey and linebacker Koa Misi won’t practice until training camp.”

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah and Pouncey’s practice time will be limited even then. Gase made it pretty clear months ago that not only will Pouncey have a limited workload in practice, but also said he doesn’t need a lot of reps to get ready.

Not sure where they stand with Misi in that regard, but he’s also a vet that seems to know what he’s suppose to do when it’s time to play.

      • D says:

I dont think it will take Misi much time to get ready either. They did change DC’s but the scheme is still very close to the same as under VJ, so i doubt it would be a lot of prep needed to get Misi back to where he needs to be. I also think its just as likely that another player would beat Misi out of a starting position in TC even if he was 100% healthy, so i think what we are depending on is Misi being on the team to be a strong backup/rotational option, maybe even a package player that brings vet leadership to the team, he doesnt have to “ready to roll” if used in that capacity,

      • Tim Knight says:

That might be the role for Misi now.

  26. D says:

Owusu apparently still hasnt joined the team because Stanfords’ quarters system. So i guess thats why i haven’t heard anything about him recently. Thats gotta suck for UDFA’s missing realy really valuable time.

  27. getterdone says:

Happy Birthday Sam Jackenthal….keep on soaring high!

Stanger, I’m sorry to do this after confirming already, but I am not going to make the Fest this year. I have been trying to schedule a vacation with my brother for a while now and we have picked October 21st through the 28th 4 Hour all-inclusive trip to Mexico. The 22nd is his birthday and it was the only week he could get off of work to take vacation. I’m going to miss you guys this year

  29. stangerx says:

Not sure if Albert is saying he enjoyed his time with us or not. Pretty clear from other comments he wanted to be an FA though.

“My body is pretty beat up after the last three years being in Miami — mentally, spiritually and physically. The last three years took a toll on me. I found myself as a man, a man of the Lord”.

4 whole hours? You guys really know how to party.

LOL herd — you and Rock are such buds. Worst thing is the guarantee that will not see the face to face with him at the Fest……still hoping to see just yours though.

Sounds like we’re working Aikens at corner, not safety.

Walt Aikens says he’s been playing all cornerback but is responsible for knowing safety too.

    • stangerx says:

It is early yet and nothing wrong with cross training. Same time for whatever reason…..they signed safeties and played them over him. Maybe they are trying to figure if they have something other than a ST ace.

      • Tim Knight says:

He played both in college and he started as a corner for us before being moved to safety. Looks like the coaches view his as depth on game day because he’s a core STs guy. So whatever position they need him at he’ll play.

      • stangerx says:

Yep — maybe they figure Michael Thomas at safety and Aikens at CB is the smart way to go with the two DBs on STs. Not like we don’t have a lot of DBs looking to be in front of them in the line when it comes to passing downs.

LOL, speech recognition! FOR OUR not FOUR HOUR.

  35. D says:

After reading those snippets from the ESPN article, im not 100% sure how Albert meant it, my guess is there is context there that might be contained if you listened to the whole presser. Still you could say that his time in Miami was hard on him, hard on everyone who was on the team during those times. 3 OC’s, 3 DC’s 2 HC’s, lots of bad press surrounding the status of the OL, never having an OG (until last year) that he could expect support from, or one that he didnt have to constantly lend support to. That also could have been a lot of what opened him up or some of those injuries. Never being able to make it through an full year without injury had to be frustrating, and having a lot of pressure put on him because of that. Our team atmosphere was also a really toxic environment most of the time he was there, so its possible he did mean it just like it was stated and if he did, there is strong support for him being right.

Also our fucking sports writers and the stupid shit they kept asking him, i watched a few of his interviews and you could see the disgust he had when all they had to ask him wasn’t about him (outside of questions about his heath and if he was considering retirement) the questions were always about Thomas or Turner or Tunsil, etc. Im pretty sure he just got fed up with a lot of things hovering around the Dolphins, including those biting flies called our reporters. I really feel we have some of the most football-tarded people covering our team that i have ever seen with other teams. NO is my “market area” team and their reporters arent dumbasses like ours are.

    • D says:

I do think that with some of the latter comments he made, part of his motivations to say that were to make him not look as bad for holding out. His holding out was absolutely to make sure he could get more money if at all possible by using free agent contracts as a way to show what he might be able to demand if he held out and got cut, in order to leverage the Jags to re-do his contract and pay him more. That didnt work out for him, so not to be seen as a totally greedy fucker, he played the Miami took a lot out of me” card so that he could save some face. Like i said though, im sure being here did take something out of him, but as a pro that decision was a business one.

    • Tim Knight says:

The reporters who cover the Dolphins tend to hone in on the negative and even made fun of the team at times. That seems to be changing though because the culture of the team is changing.

      • D says:

Kinda, they still try to bring it down, its just not as effective as it has been in the past.

  36. D says:

Actually Rock i kinda thought she was right, i mean if you can get in your partying in 4 hours, enough to justify a trip to Mexico, then im thinking damn these guys really must know how to party if they are efficient enough to squeeze that much fun into such a small time frame.

  37. D says:

Its likely that they feel like Aikens time being a S previously means he has more to learn at CB, and that’s why he has been playing there predominately this off season. Maybe its more the fact they feel like there is not much left for him to learn at S. Maybe is also the statement that Gase made about never having enough CB’s, so they feel they have DB’s more so that S or CB’s when it comes to the backup players. Either way, what times they are spending right now with players playing wherever they are, doesn’t mean anything to what they see them as, as much as i think it speaks to what they are curious they might be able to also see them as.

    • Tim Knight says:

I think it has a lot to do with what you said about Gase saying can’t have enough corners. Our secondary was riddled with injuries last year. If you suffer a few injuries in a game you need guys to be able to step in and if guys are only a corner or safety that may not be the option you need.

Reminds me of Las Vegas where you can get IV’s after drinking all night and 3 hrs later you can be straight as arrow. I guess when people say life is short, Make every minute count. Mexico is famous for the access to drugs when taking a weekend vacation and now they are into the opium farming. Thank you, Obama for making mary-jane almost legal in all states and forcing these other countries to make better drugs for us.
