The official start day of NFL Free Agency starts today, and yet there were about 1000 players who were already gobbled up, and much to my surprise, the cap poor Dolphins were wheeling and dealing like nobody’s business. I’m not sure I’ll ever understand what the plan is, I was pretty sure we were going to be quiet in FA, and we were out there banging like we had the same amount of cash available as the Jets and Browns. One thing I do know, any thoughts the Dolphins were tearing this thing down and starting a 2-5 year rebuild has been quashed. There’s no question now that we’re in it to win it, but have the moves we’ve made made us better?
We replaced a 25 year old fan favorite WR (Jarvis Landry) with another 25 year old WR (Albert Wilson) who has basically 1/4 of the amount of receptions Landry has. We didn’t want to pay Landry near $16M per year, so we get a good deal on Wilson at $8M per. Hold on, because then we sign 32 year old veteran slot WR Danny Amendola. Huh? He gets a 2 year contract for about $12M, with $8.25M guaranteed. I think this signing pushed the Landry fans over the edge. I get it, we couldn’t spend $15-16M on our own stud, so we replace him with Wilson and Amendola? I can’t get inside information, but obviously Gase was not happy with our WR corps. Forget Landry, I think he’s seriously worried about Parker and Carroo. I think rightfully so, because Parker has yet to give us an elite season. Why did Landry routinely have 100 receptions, and what should be our best WR (Parker) about half that? Then you look at the guy we had to have in the 2016 draft and used 3 picks to get Leonte Carroo, who has given us 10 receptions in 2 seasons. If this doesn’t explain why we now have 2 WR’s instead of one, nothing will. Just so you all understand, i thought maybe we would address this in the draft, but I guess Gase wanted more proven commodities, and I get that. We’ll have to wrap Amendola in the same bubble wrap we used for Pouncey in the preseason.
OK, now onto the big boys, the defensive tackles, because it sure seems like we’re gonna need one with the departure of Ndamukong Suh. Here’s the 5 I think may help us, that is, if we have any money left to spend . . .
Dontari Poe 6’3 346 27YO
How do you replace a big man? With an even bigger man! Poe is huge at 346 lbs, and no, he’s not at the same level of Suh. No one we sign in FA will be, but that’s not the point. Not to insult anyone here, but say we bring in Poe at about $7M per year, he’s going to give us more than a 1/3 of the production of Suh, for a 1/3 of the price. Poe was the 11th pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and played 5 seasons with the Chiefs. He went to ATL last season on a 1YR deal, and is now a free agent. He’s a big DT that clogs the middle, and in his best season in 2014 brought down opposing QB’s 6 times. He;s not a real pass rush threat, more of a run stopper, and that works for me. I think Poe would be ideal, but there’s a lot of other teams out there flush with cash, so we’ll see what happens.

Bennie Logan 6’2 309 28YO
I actually had Logan as one of guys I thought we should target last season, and now, like Poe, he’s also available because he only signed a 1 YR deal with the Chiefs. Logan played the first 4 years of his career in Philadelphia, and he’s a guy that makes an awful lot of tackles. Like Poe, he’s not a real pass rush threat, but he’s steady and can wrap up well, which makes him valuable to me. Like Poe, he signed an $8M contract last year, and I expect he would be in the same neighborhood as Poe, and if Spotrac is accurate, they have Poe at $5.7M, which I inflated to $7M, and figure the same for Logan.

Clinton McDonald 6’1 290 31YO
McDonald played in 14 games last season , starting 3 for the Tampa Bay Bucs, and managed to tally 5 sacks as part of the DL rotation. At this stage of his career, he wouldn’t be a starter, but what we really need is either a starter, or a solid rotational guy, and I think McDonald would give us the latter. McDonald has played the last 4 years with the Bucs, and in 2016, started 12 games, so he’s capable.

Nick Fairley 6’5 291
Fairley missed the entire 2017 season with a heart condition. He was released by the Saints with an NFI designation due to that condition. Apparently, Fairley feels he’s ready to return to the NFL, and would obviously need to pass a physical in order to be eligible to play. The former 1st RD pick in 2011 (13th overall), Fairley actually had his best season in 2016, logging 6.5 sacks for the Saints. Always a pass rushing threat, he played 4 seasons for Detroit before signing with the Rams, and then the Saints. Obviously, it’s an odd situation with him having the heart issue, but if he’s cleared, he would be a pass rushing threat from the interior we could certainly use.

Tom Johnson 6’3 295 33YO
Johnson has obviously been around, but Johnson played in all 16 games last season for the Vikes starting 15. He was fairly productive notching 32 tackles and 2 sacks. It would be nice to put another stud in the lineup, but a solid guy in the rotation would suffice too. I would think he would be a 1 year contract, and that’s fine, because we have some young guys that are up and coming, Godchaux especially, but Vincent Taylor also flashed, so this is just a stop gap.

Kyle Williams, Chris Baker and Star Lotuleilei all signed contracts already, so this is what’s left. It’s not especially pretty once you get past Poe, but some of these guys are certainly serviceable. We may also dragft a DT early if the draft falls that way, like Da’Ron Payne or Vita Vea. Second RD option for me at least could be Harrison Phillips. If there are any DT’s you feel I should have mentioned, gimme a shout.

drg – I hope Sitton will be a positive influence. We need someone in the locker room that holds the others accountable. Hard to find a guy like that. First off he has to have the personality, but more importantly, he has to be a very good player that is respected.
Look Mayfield isnt ideal, but for the plans that Gase has for our offense he should fit well. I like Allen because he is prototypical for almost any pro-style offense, his has short game and deep ball skills, he’s a natural under center, pocket passing QB. There is just a lot more concepts you cant play in his offense where as Mayfield is more a system QB. Lucky for us i believe our system is one that he fits in and thats why i wouldnt at all be upset with him as our selection and i wouldt care if we had to trade up some to get him. The top 4 this year are solid, and if i had a beef with any of them it would be Darnold, i wouldn’t trade up for him. I also think that Rudolph wouldn’t be a bad selection but i dotn think he has the upper tier kind of potential to make him worth a top 11 pick so if we were selecting him id wish it were at a better value position.
Ive got my QB’s ordered liek this right now. Allen, and mostly because of the ceiling he has, i dont care that he isnt the most polished and pedestrian comp percentages, those are coach-able things but the other things he has arent. Rosen and Mayfield i have at about a tie for 2nd, Mayfield because i think he is a good system fit for us, nearly perfect system fit, and he has intangible that i think give him great on-field leadership potential. Rosen is the kinda of middle ground between a good system fit and being a more protypical QB with a blend of top tier ability, though not a spectacular as maybe Allen is physically or Mayfield is as a on-field leader. Darnold to me kinda of is Rosen-lite, though i have heard he probably has a better on-field leadership type personality. He is too erratic to me, and i feel more comfortable with Rosen, Allen and Mayfield than him. Im probably pretty alone in that evaluation though/

I completely agree, but it has to be a on a team with some sort of identity of its own already, so that the person isnt your entire team. If we had good contributions across the board, and the team solidly played well, and they were consistently disciplined then that played take the team to a whole other level. Thats what Gronk is, he is that next level player that integrated with a very solid team, coached well and playing with consistency, becomes almost God like. Even Gronk on our team last year doesn’t do shit and its why Suh, even though disrupting on every play overall didnt change the run stoppage of our defense in any significant way. I do know that we would have been even worse without Landry and Suh and all that, so the statements of “oh how did having those guys really work out for us” is silly, but it does have a somewhat fair point about paying like a team that is one player away from perennial playoffs when we obviously aren’t.
DRG, they are absolutely difference makers, they just didnt make any difference on a team as far away from being competitive as we were last year.

And keep an eye on Dion Sims; the Dolphins are believed to have interest in bringing him back if Chicago cuts him after signing Trey Burton. Sims is due to make $6 million next season, and $4 million of that becomes guaranteed if he’s on the Bears’ roster after Friday.
Branch was playing really well before he got hurt. Our defense played well early in the season while the offense was trying to figure out how to score a point. LOL
Branch’s contract is 3 years $24M at $8M per, it just happens to be at the high point this year. It’s the same deal we just signed Wilson too.
Alonso’s contract is 4 years $29M which is $7.25M per. These are not crazy contracts. Do you see what FAs are getting this year?

It’s time we start building through the Draft, rather than overpaying for FAs (the Tannenbaum way of doing things).
Disagree. He’s a quality starting DE. Just because he’s not all-pro or pro bowl doesn’t mean these guys make peanuts. He played hurt for quite a few games last year before it started taking its toll and he had to shut it down. He was on pace before that to probably have his best sack season. His deal isn’t long-term or a burden. Not sure why you guys harp on his and Alonso’s middle of the road contracts.
Lou, I said we need to add a QB. I used “backup” because that is what he’ll be early on. Then let it play out from there.

M13, do you ever look at the roster and see how many draft picks and UDFAs are on the team? Since the Suh contract, we have not signed an outside FA to a deal worth $30M or more. We are doing what you’re suggesting. Every team uses FA to add some pieces. We have not been one of the biggest players in FA for 3 years now (since Grier became GM). We have made some trades, but so what. It’s about adding talent to improve your team. Building through the draft doesn’t mean exclusively. It’s a blend.

I have to say, with how the whole Pouncey thing went down, to somehow pull off the deal for a starting center in Kilgore was pretty impressive. That was good work.
I have to admit, this offseason is starting to grow on me. Of course it may be I’m so oline starved that any moves to improve it are like water to a man dying of thirst.
I have to say, I didn’t think they would do it and didn’t think they COULD do it but I’m pleasantly surprised to see they let Landry, Pouncey and Suh go and were able to do what they did with the offensive line.

Agreed. We need to continue to add to the oline. Both Sitton and Kilgore are nearing their dotage football-wise so we get a few years at best. Add more oline, a playmaking TE, maybe another LB, a mid to late round RB or FA RB, and I’ll be happy.

FYI, we’ll have 8 players on the roster 30 years of age or more this season. That counts Denney, Wake, Jones and Tannehill in July. Most of the roster is made up of 22-26.

After my initial emotional response to losing Suh and Landry, I took a step back and really only asked myself two questions.
Would I have been happy if we kept Landry at 15 mil per season?
Would I be happier to have Suh on the roster at 26 mil?
For me, both answers are a resounding NO. Then to land a top 5 G, and flip Pouncey to Kilgore in the blink of an eye.
I’m getting excited again. It’ll probably last right up to the 2nd or 3rd preseason game when we lose some key cogs, everything turns to sh*t, and it turns to same ol same ol, lol.
They at least sure have something in mind. And it is not a blow up….more like FF stuff. They are trying to compete next year.

The question you should ask yourself is THIS: how many reps will Branch see with all of the DEs we have? What’s more, how are we to develop young Charles Harris what with our DEEP DE roster?
I’m not dissin’, just trying to give ya food for thought… nothing more.
1st of all, Branch is a DE. Harris is a pass rush specialist at this point. If you want Harris to develop, that’s up to him doing what’s necessary to get on the field. I’m not worried about how many snaps Branch has at DE. We’ve got 5 guys right now in Wake, Hayes, Quinn, Branch and Harris and the only thing I care about is how they play as a GROUP to get the job done during the season.

I agree that Suh and Landry aren’t good enough to cover for a bad team, but that’s the point, right? And what’s a difference maker? If a guy doesn’t significantly increase your win share % then why devote a ton of money to him? If the middle of your roster is soft then you need to focus on that through the draft and bargain FAs.
That’s why I get so annoyed with trades like the Philly deals, Carroo, etc. There’s going to be plenty of misses in the draft, especially in the later rounds. You have to hoard those picks so that the numbers play out in your favor.

Who knows if any of these moves will pay off, but I like the strategy we seem to be following. Other than the Philly trade, we’ve kept our picks or accumulated them. Most of the deals we’ve made are reasonable salary, short term deals with an out. Seems like several are lunch pail type personalities. We’ll see how the draft plays out and the other moves they make. Long ways to go.

There’s been a lot of letting go this week. Losing Landry and Suh was tough. But in the grand scheme of things it’s no big deal at all. This place was a great outlet for me this past week or so. I was able to yell and vent without even speaking a word out loud.
My family had a much more devastating loss this week when my sister in law, but really sister, lost her war and I do mean war, against cancer. We lost her on Monday. She fought it so hard my brother with her every step of the way. We put her to rest tomorrow.

I see him in some mocks at #14 to #24. But I kind of think after the QBs and the top 5 prospects that it kind of evens out and it’s a broader pool that could go anywhere. He’s considered to be a day one starter talent with upside. That’s usually what I look for when looking at the 1st round.
Once you get past the first 15 picks or so this draft kind of opens up (at least it seems that way)

I just posted the same thing. Larsen said he prefers RG so he and Davis can compete there. Then add a guy like Hernandez and finally be strong at the position. Even he doesn’t start right away that’s blue chip depth.

After my initial emotional response to losing Suh and Landry, I took a step back and really only asked myself two questions.
Would I have been happy if we kept Landry at 15 mil per season?
Would I be happier to have Suh on the roster at 26 mil?
For me, both answers are a resounding NO. Then to land a top 5 G, and flip Pouncey to Kilgore in the blink of an eye.
I’m getting excited again. It’ll probably last right up to the 2nd or 3rd preseason game when we lose some key cogs, everything turns to sh*t, and it turns to same ol same ol, lol.

The question i always ask is can we replace the person effectively with the money we save. If the answer is yes then the move is a good one, and thats even if its a break even situation.
With Landry it was 16mil we saved, and we replaced them with two guys who total 14mil, so we have a 2 mil advantage already and the two guys we picked up, plus what we could get for another 2 mil likely comes close/matches those production numbers. Thats why i didnt have a problem with us pay Landry 13-14mil per on a contract, because i think his production and the market value had him right there. There is no arguing those points, its economics and supply an demand, anything this else is a personal judgment about the quality of the player which im leaving out of my assessment. Still since we have effectively replaced him at or slightly below what he would have cost us, dilly dilly.
Suh it the one i have a big problem with because ultimately we are taking a loss. It might be deferred until next year, and we might recomp some money after June 1st but the here and now help he was is not replaced by that move. We still have a good bit of time to make up for some of it, especially if we get a stud in the draft and/or a good late FA, or pre-season cut/pickup that helps fill the gap. Its hard to say you had a break even move when you have a -1mil yield on the cut, and still no replacement to push the move into the positives. So the Suh move to me is a wait and see.
Pouncey was a 7mil cap savings and we picked a guy up via trade that cost us almost nothing in draft capital and at 5mil approx in cap hit, we still are 2mil in advantage from where we were with Pouncey. Whether he can fill Pouncey’s roles as effectively is to be seen, but im going to say the move was even on the player for player part so we are ahead on this deal.
I still dont like losing our top guys, i think the idea that those guy weren’t that talented or important is pretty rude, and seems a lot more like blow it up fever than rational though. The other side of it though, like i mentioned above is that our team just really isnt that good right now, so they werent netting us anything in the long run. If our entire defense was solid, i would be kicking and screaming about the Suh move and most of you would too because he would be terror that took our defense from good to nightmare.
Same thing with Landry, were we to have a potent offense, Landry is a guy who elevates that, he goes from being the guy who picked up a lot of completions on shorter route to a guy who probably could have had his role expanded to open up the offense more.
Pouncey was out the door though, his health is bad, i really think he owes it to himself to retire, but some people can accept that fate. We had to make a move at least by 2019, but he helped us out by taking himself out of the equation so we could make the move now. Im just glad we had a plan in place to do it so well so quickly, because i really felt like we might have to throw a rookie to the wolves at some point this year when Pouncey went down again.
I like our moves, and ill miss our players, but unlike mike ill just appreciate them from afar without flipping the switch to hating them. Our offseason has been surprisingly good and without having to make moves to bring in a flashy name to feel good about it.

I’d better enjoy this one weekend off because next Thursday I fly out with a co-worker to Baltimore for one of the three conventions I do each year at the Inner Harbor. Forecast is for highs near 50, lows in the 30’s, 2 days of rain but no snow or ice (probably). I’ll take that after the 3 Nor’easters they’ve had recently. Yes, it’s a brief return to the land of high taxes and low temperatures.
After looking at prospects that could be there for us at #11, I’d say there are at least a dozen I’d be cool with. I could also see us trading down. It depends if we’re all about adding a top QB which I’m not against either. But I think we’d have to trade up to do that. Unless we have a QB we like that we think we can get in the 2nd rd. It’s really wide open at this point.
So just back from the hospital. Turns out I had an infection at a suture site in my nose (where the NG tube was). I had to have it lanced. Back to the pain meds for a day or 2 at least.
I alternate my pain meds. Cabernet on even number days; Coors Light on odd numbered days.

Besides Tony Lippett coming back to compete at corner, him being a former WR having good long stride speed, he might be able to play a little deep safety in sub packages for us. He knows how to track the ball.
Maybe Tankersley could do that as well depending on who we’re matching up against. We have a lot of length in the secondary.
These options have nothing to do with replacing Jones and McDonald. It allows them to play closer to the LOS. Because of our personnel on defense – Jones and McDonald being S and nickel LB type guys, I see us playing a lot of what would look like dime 4-1-6 against spreads.

I think Alonso is our #1 LB. Last year if you go back and look at it, the transition on defense happened. When people talk about rebuilding, retooling or revamping, that really started two years ago when Gase became HC – usually how it works. Now look at this offseason so far, more significant coaching and personnel changes. Gase is not going to keep rolling with the status quo, he didn’t like it. Right or wrong he’s the HC with his vision and career on the line.
This team is pretty new. How many games have most of the players on this team played together, a handful maybe, most 1-4 years. There will be a lot more no experience playing together in 2018. That will fall on Gase and his staff. The team didn’t blow it up or rebuild this year, it’s been a 2-3 year process under him since 2016.

He was a good pickup and is very much in the Landry mold. May not have the amount of catches, but I don’t think that’s the plan either. He adds more speed to the WR core. We are really fast at WR.
I know many of us are not fans of the WR screens, but we will continue to run them, every team does. Both Wilson and Amendola know how they work even when not getting the ball. Not saying Landry didn’t, just that these two are going to be involved in what we do on offense with that quick short stuff in the passing game. The RBs too lead by Drake.
Lots of speed and quickness on this offense. Add that TE and another RB and… 🙂

I really like the speed and versatility potential so far. I think the moves so far have provided the ability to be pretty open with the draft. TE, RB, LB, OL,QB, and of course K..lol. If we target anything, even as a move up in Rounds 2 or 3, I pray it is s TE. (Although Fuuuuumigali, from Wisconsin can be had in the 4th or so, and he would seem to be a Gase type of guy.

I get your posts on the economics of football….and I agree with them, for the most part. The problem is you can’t monetize heart or leadership or making guys around you better….and it varies from situation to situation, team to team and player to player. How much is it “worth it” to a team to keep a guy for intangibles? How much is it worth to a team to get rid of a guy they feel is a cancer? When dealing with humans, there will always be some gray area. There are tons of variables…just looking at the raw monetary transaction doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story. “Better” is subjective.
I understand that. Wake to me is that guy where I’d keep him just for leadership. Denney is probably one of those guys to as evidenced by his long tenure with us. I don’t think these moves were all about money. The Suh one can’t be explained that way because it just doesn’t match up logically. The leadership aspect I think is at the heart of most those moves, there wasn’t enough of of those variables for us to feel like we were getting what we were paying for. Sometimes what they say isn’t as bullshit coach speak as we think. This 100% smells of a culture change, but I think the culture change is with the FO. They are learning to value intangibles along with the talent.

When you compare Jordan Chunn’s #’s at his pro day to Le’Veon Bell they are pretty close. And he’s a little heavier than Bell was at the time. If Chunn gets himself down a bit, like to around 229lbs, he could be a force to reckon with at the next level. Not saying he’s a day 1 guy, but you develop him for a year and he could be lights out from then on.
He’s a tremendous value if he goes day 3. Some day 2 guys who can’t play on his level.
