One example: Mike Gesicki
The Positives: This is one athletic tight end! First of all this guy can soar. Want to have some fun – google “Mike Gesicki catch” and check out the images of this jumping sky high above defenders.
We’ve seen the NFL make good NFL players out of basketball players. In this case, Gesicki is a volleyball player. Every time he goes up for a catch, it looks like he is going to spike it. But his 10 1/8 inch hands pull the ball in softly.
Oh and he’s fast. Gesicki ran a 4.54 40 yard dash at the combine. That speed had him light up opposing defenses that just could not find a way to stop him. Over the last two years Gesicki had 105 catches, 1242 yards, and 15 touchdowns.
The Negatives: This is not your classic tight end. He’s not going to be much of an asset when it comes to run blocking. Gesicki is certainly strong, he had 22 reps in the bench press at the combine which was second among tight ends – but I would not call his build prototypical tight end size. Sure he is 6’5 but he has a bit of a lean lanky build. He’s not that physical. Think of Gesicki as more Jimmy Graham than Anthony Fasano.
The Alien Dust: I wonder if there was a player who helped himself more at the combine. He wowed everyone. It wasn’t just a fast 40 yard dash. He was 1st among tight ends in every category except for bench press…where he fell to 2nd place…lol
This is a special athlete. He may not be a huge asset in the blocking game – but this a guy who changes an offense. I believe Gesicki will be a pro bowl receiver in the NFL.
His impressive combine might be enough to vault him into the 1st round. But I think there is a good chance Gesicki is a 2nd or even a 3rd round pick. If he lasts to the 4th round – consider every NFL scout a moron.

The offense sucks, but how many games did we watch the opponent immediately just wreck them and score? I don’t know, but sure seemed liked more often than not. 3rd and 20 and you knew they would convert….
This defense needs playmakers. So maybe drafting DT @ 11 isn’t the way to go. But getting a stud CB or LB would help more than another WR. Unless it’s Julio Jones I don’t want one that early.

Armando’s opinion piece has a couple of (at least) false assumptions. The first is that a team needs an “elite” QB to make the Super Bowl. The second is that a $13M cap hit keeps them from moving on.
If you dont have an elite QB you defiantly have to have a very well balance and disciplined team. Top QB have been at the center of most championship teams, but it can be done without it. Usually the defense on teams who dont have it are at the center of why they won it, too, so its important to stack a defense out.
Truthfully the best way to have a good shot at a championship is to have every thing within your control be the best it can be, so that means if you can improve the QB position, you try to. If you can improve your OL you try to, if you can improve your defense, you try to. With salary caps and whatnot, it means you have to be selective and get the best bang for your buck, but again, it doesn’t mean that if you have a decent QB you should be complacent about not trying to improve the position.
You need to have affordable people at any position and there is a premium on QB being one of them if at all possible since its the most expensive position on the team. You also need a good next man up scenario (see Eagles this past year) and you need competition to push the starters. To me all that adds up to adding talent at QB if we get the right person to either fall to us, or make a move to get that person if we feel the cost is worth it.
To me it looks like Gase is trying to make a team that can win with most any QB, as his moves seem to be at normalizing the salaries and getting the right character and professionalism in the locker room. Still, with that philosophy he is going to constantly turn over the roster when players wind up getting to the point they want to be paid and no longer value the success of the team over their own individual gain. Thats going to happen, and we as fans cant be pissed at a player trying to do that. Thats their lives and their livelihood so c’est la vie.
We are going to have to have depth at all positions for next man up(including QB), we are going to have to have affordable people at all positions, to run this team that way. Its a good way to run it, dont get me wrong but its a much more difficult thing to accomplish. The Patriot have been doing it for a while, but look at all the other teams in the NFL, many of which have attempted it and failed.

I agree, and thats what im saying. The team has to have next player up at all positions to be in that mode. If you dont have a guy behind them that can step up, you have to make a different decision than whats best for the team simply because you now have to hold on to that guy. IMO even if you dont think we NEED a first round QB, because we have little to nothing behind Tanny, we need to have that as a consideration as a need, and not just a, oh we can wait and get a guy in the 4th or 6th.
Id say if we had a solid guy behind Tanny, or Tanny was a more “elite” level QB id be in the mode of, sure always adding a guy with potential in the latter rounds is fine, given what we have, but without that and with Tanny on a year and a third off from football, two knee injuries in that time frame and never playing with real consistency before hand, we owe it to ourselves to prioritize that position. I consider it the most important position to have a next man up scenario at.
I’m all for a 1st round QB this year, not necessarily because of any one prospect, but just in general to stack out some talent at the position and the later round guys aren’t going to cut it for how badly we need it this year. I cant see us selecting a different position if any of the top 4 QB’s are still there. I could see a couple of 2nd round guys being in the mix as well, but i actually would rather them not select a QB at all if they aren’t doing it day 1 or 2.

I dunno, i think developed well, yes. Part of Tanny’s problem was he needed development and got almost none. Rudolph given the same attention will likely turn out the same, but i think with Gase as the coach and his focus on that position, he like could get Rudolph to a higher playing level than Tanny. I know you could say well lets see what he can do with Tanny but i think Tanny is too far behind the curve at this point, the development stage has past him by and by the time he would possible catch up, he’s Jay Cutler and needing to retire. I just think Tanny is too much of damage good to ever reacht he ceiling that i think he likely had at the time he was drafted.

Id have a few guy capable of exceeding Tanny’s current ceiling, but on par with what his ceiling was coming out of college.
Dont know if you guys realized this or not but that 4th we got for Jarvis from the Browns, isnt even the first one of the 4th round. When the deal was announced i assumed it was but it appears its one they had a good bit later in the round instead.
That hurts the trade value if we were wanting to leverage a trade because some top play fell to day 3 or if we wanted to use it on a top guy who fell.
No, we knew that day, because the Browns made a trade and used that pick that same day, so we got the #23 pick instead, a pick they acquired from a different trade. That #1 pick in the 4th would have been worth a lot more, there are always teams who want that first pick day 3
I knew they had traded the 3rd to Buffalo, but i didnt know they also had given us the 2nd 4th they had instead of the first. They swapped 4ths with GB i think, to go along with the player, but i thought it was the later 4th that they swapped with them.

I don’t think we’re building around Tanny at all. Teams don’t build a team around a 10-16th ranked QB coming off injuries and not having played in almost a year and a half. I think it has more to do with the idea that he is what they have right now and there’s really no good reason to just kick him to the curb. He represents their best chance to win now…which is what they need to do to keep their jobs. They could still draft a QB this year or next and move on from him. If they are going to stick with him long term, there is a lot of work to be done because no aspect of our team is close to being high end or top 5ish….which is what you will need to succeed with an average to slightly above average QB. They better focus on upgrading this defense…a lot…if we’re sticking with what we got at QB because we’re gonna need a top 3-5 defense to win anything.

Sadly, my projections for this team and my evaluation of their talent pool has been right for the past decade. I’m hoping for that to turn around one of these days. Plus, we’re not bad enough to get a top 5 pick to get a QB. We’re mired in mediocrity, so we constantly get picks in the middle of the round and can’t get a high end QB. Wash and repeat.
If we’re going to unseat Brady and win our division, we need to produce more pressure. We’re not going to match their scoring. We need to be able to impact their offense like Philly did…with consistent pressure.

I don’t think it’s a knee-jerk reaction at all; Suh was our best Defensive player and that hole will need to be filled. That’s not to say that we MUST take a DT @ R1P11, but we just worse on Defense but cutting him.
I just think that Vita Vea or Da’Ron Payne cannot be ruled out @ R1P11… they are both VERY good players.
But for the record, I hope we go with a playmaker @ R1P11 instead of a DT, too (I’m with ya on that!). And I hope that our current cats Phillips, Godchaux, and Taylor continue to emerge.
Have to be considering Vea and maybe Payne at #11. What position wouldn’t we take at #11 if the talent/slot value was there and could not draft down? Can’t come up with a single one….and with Phillips in a contract year, DT is about the last one you could exclude.

One timely sack/fumble and an unstoppable offense won the game for Philly, not consistent pressure. The Pets were in a position to score on literally every drive of the game except the last two where they fumbled, then ran out of time.
With recent talk of Derwin James to us @ R1P11, I’m taking another look at him. Man… I just don’t know. As your resident DB enthusiast, I can tell y’all that his ceiling is VERY high(!)… hence the hype. But I can also tell y’all that as freak an athlete as he is, I would have liked to see more production out of him.
Sure, his highlight reels are stacked with some BIG hits and some stellar plays… but I just don’t see consistency when looking at his tape, so as to warrant R1P11 consideration.
IF he’s properly coached, I see a potentially VERY HIGH reward there. IF he’s not properly coached, I see a potential BUST there. What’s more… IF what I hear is true, he doesn’t have it together from above the neck (brains/maturity)… at least not yet.
I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to pass on Derwin @ R1P11… but that’s my $.02.
He lacks experience but never heard any knocks about his intelligence. One of his strengths in his NFL profile is “Absolute alpha in the locker room. Comes up to handle film sessions on weekends. When he talks, players listen.”
I’m not seeing it either. Maybe there’s some playmaking ability there but I haven’t seen it in any of his games that I watched. Nothing that really stood out that says to me “this is what everyone has been talking about”. Personally, it seems like a lot of FSU fans hyping THEIR guy
It’s weird with him. Some people say what you guys are saying and others think he’s the best defensive player in the draft. I’ve seen him listed as the 2nd best prospect in the draft behind Barkley. Maybe some chalk that up to him lacking experience but in time he’ll be great.
If we start making more big plays having more speed I don’t see why we can’t score more and match some of the other high scoring teams. Just because we haven’t been that in the past doesn’t mean it can’t change. You see it all the time with personnel changes.

So it seems that there’s some agreement that the offense isn’t going to move the ball or score points but it seems the answer isn’t to upgrade on the offensive side of the ball; it’s to upgrade the defense.
That argument that the defense needs to be upgraded because the offense isn’t going to score is kind of ridiculous. If the offense can’t score or move the ball then you need to address that issue by bringing in players to help on offense. I’m not saying we can’t use some help on the defense but the biggest issue with the team is it’s inability to move the ball consistently on offense and score points.
I have teams needs ranked as QB, TE/OL, LB/DT, then S/CB/DE/RB/WR i dont count out WR like some here are doing. I like the group we have but if the right guy fell to me im adding them just i would any other group so the overall group is better. I dont really feel a strong need at any of the latter positions, including DE, but i wouldn’t pass up talent at any of them if it crossed my path.
Im not big on Derwin James either, though he feels to me like a clone of McDonald, so a box safety with decent coverage skills and could probably play a hybrid LB role. Fitzpatrick though is a guy who can play FS, wouldnt be bad if brought up in the box, has good blitz skills and could even switch out to play at CB in nickle or dime. Hell he has outside Cb skills too but id feel a lot better with him in out of the slot if i had him at CB.
DaRon Payne is definitely in consideration for us at 11 im sure, i dont know if Vea is because he is more suited for a 3-4 defense. He can probably play 3 and 4 tech, but he is suited best for 1 tech.
Not done yet, but according to Troy Vincent looks like the catch rule is gonna be changed more to what makes sense.

I think (think, now) that I would be ok with taking Minkah to play FS, at R3P73, although I would rather have several other guys at R1P11 who I think would have more positive impact (no pun intended), but I would NOT want Derwin James until R4P 131, because he will (I think) only be able to play nickel LB or nickel S or nickel CB and that is way too high to take a guy for that position.

Just remember this, teams play base defense about 20% of the time. The rest are sub packages against spread formations, short yardage and goal line. Matt Patricia recently said this at the combine when he was with Mayock and Eisen. Specialist players are highly coveted.
But James does not get INTs. He did so well cause he was the best athlete in one-on-ones and FSU has so many great players that no opponent can isolate or double team one guy. Neither of those will be so true in the NFL.
I think P, PK, CB, WR, DE, OT, C, OG, and LS are all positions I would not take in Round 1.
Just not enough return on the investment (P, PK, LS) or too risky (WR) or we are too stacked there already DE, CB, OG, C. The OT guys this year just do not excite me at all.

The idea is to have a set of complementary receivers who are position diverse – players that are all capable of being the primary read of any given snap. Philly was getting close all game long. Brady and NE were making plays. But, that’s why I said “consistent pressure” not sacks. You need to be able to just keep coming at him play after play all game long without a drop off in trying to collapse the pocket because, hopefully, it results in a big play…maybe more.
Brady threw for over 500 yards. Most of the game Brady could have a sit down dinner in the pocket

The place that Brady is vulnerable is pressure from DT’s not outside pass rush. Brady can avoid most of the outside stuff and their passign game is designed to negate it anyways with the short quick passes. Big fat men running right at his face shakes him up, so i hope whatever we do we find a way to replace Suh in the draft or with a late pickup after there are post draft or PS cuts. We might have what we need from Philips but he is hard to count on

Philly had 9 QB hits in the game. Held Brady to 58% completion percentage, and NE was 50% on 3rd downs. Again, i’m not suggesting they demolished Brady. I agree with ya. But, they kept bringing pressure, and it finally paid off. You’re rarely gonna get big sack numbers against Brady for multiple reasons, but you have to be able to bring it consistently all game long and hope it pays off. We don’t.

I like Derwin James. I like him because of the versatility he brings. I don’t really evaluate him as a CB or S. I see him as a hybrid CB/S/LB. a guy you may be able to use in multiple coverage packages and really disguise some coverages.
That’s pretty much what James is – versatile

It’s funny we say things like I don’t want to take this guy or that guy and I get it, it’s draft talk. But when you do that you set yourself up for disappointment if the team likes that prospect and takes them. LOL
That’s why I like to discuss multiple options and try to understand all of them. This current regime is big on DL so keep that in mind. You can also find good players in other rounds. It’s not all about the 1st rd. There will also be the next wave of FA for 2nd tier guys so if we add a DT maybe that won’t be a high priority. I’m not sure WR is either. I think TE and a RB is higher being that we have glaring voids there, we have depth at WR. Maybe a hybrid DB will be a priority being that they will be on the field more than a 3rd LB.
I’d be thrilled if Smith, Edmonds or Nelson were the pick at #11 IF Ridley isn’t there. If it’s Vea or Payne, not so much, but I would understand it I guess.
However, my first choice IS Ridley and it’s because I see what he does to defenders in his route running, how he has them going one way and he stops on a dime and goes another. You can’t guard the guy. He’s THAT good. I’m all in on him. Will I be disappointed if we don’t have a shot at him? Sure will. But, if he’s there at #11 and we don’t take him I’ll be pissed; not disappointed.

I saw something about us being interested in him before. You can get quality LBs in the 2nd and 3rd. Again, only two are going to play most of the game.

Drafting McMillan and trading for Anthony helped make up for some of that. Finding a guy in Allen who plays STs and is ready whenever you need him at any position was a nice find UDFA. We should add another LB in the draft. I’d be shocked if we didn’t.
If Gase really likes his guys to be strong leaders then one guy he should be interested in is Micah Kiser. Good LB. Better person.

Ridley is a top 10 talent. He reminds me of Marvin Harrison. Big chunk plays and then those to the house plays. Ridley plays fast and looks the part as a WR. He’s going to be a playmaker in the NFL.

Marvin Harrison was 6-0 185, Antonio Brown 5-10 180 is who he’s compared too. He runs a complete route tree and makes big plays in all of them. He probably won’t be there at #11.

Yep! Plenty of talent you could see a team taking top 10 and others falling to 15 or whatever. There are always draft surprises. Take the BPA who matches need or want. I still think we could trade down.
Yeah, except Luck has played 7 fewer games and close to 30 more TDs. Funny how people compare stars but leave out stuff that doesn’t fit their narrative. Plus, Luck has played behind terrible OLs and been sacked about 80 fewer times than Tannehill. 80. So much for that comparison.
Luck almost died. I’m not into the nitpicky stuff but both QBs are an example of personnel issues. I would put Luck ahead of Tannehill but so what?
At this point I wouldn’t trust him anymore than Tanny either though. I do agree he’s a more developed QB, which was also true their draft year, but still the amount if injuries, the amount of time away from football, I’d draft a QB too if I were the Colts
We’ll find out about Tannehill this offseason. He hasn’t played in games since late in 2016, but he was playing in TC in August of 2017 when the non-surgery failed. He’s on pace to be ready for May/June minicamps and OTAs after having the surgery. He’ll be 30 years old in July, not 34. I think “kind of” writing him off at this time is premature.
