Dolphins make some surprise cuts – Look to potentially add DE Jadeveon Clowney in a trade with Texans

As you all probably know already, the Dolphins made some cuts yesterday, not reporting this, just recapping what’s happened. One of the bigger surprises was cutting DT Akeem Spence who we picked up last year from Detroit for a conditional 2019 7th RD pick. Also somewhat a surprise was cutting safety T.J. McDonald. Not surprising was parting ways with OL Will Holden (Not to be confused with actor William Holden). We also waived OT Jordan Mills who when we first picked him up after Buffalo released him I thought he may be our starting RT this season. The way he performed for us in practice and in the preseason made it clear that wasn’t going to happen. Also waived were LB Chase Allen, and veteran TE Clive Walford.

Now to the big news. The Dolphins met with Jadeveon Clowney yesterday, although Clowney did not deem the Miami Dolphins originally as a potential suitor. He preferred the Seattle Seahawks, but after meeting with Dolphins HC Brian Flores, his opinion may have changed. At the moment, it actually seems as if the Dolphins are the team most likely to land Clowney, but at what price? Keep in mind, the price is two-fold. We have to trade talent to the Texans in exchange for Clowney, and then we have to pay Clowney. He signed a 1 year deal worth just under $16M, but what happens after this season? Therein lies the rub . . .

I had to drive from one office to another yesterday and I had the pleasure of catching some good dialogue between NFL Radio hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller. Pat Kirwan is not the foremost authority on everything NFL, but as a former HC and NFL GM, he’s well respected in NFL circles. Kirwan was very much against the Dolphins acquiring Clowney and made some excellent points. He was saying that Clowney hasn’t been a premier player while playing with J.J. Watt. This reminds me of tha situation the Dolphins had years ago. Flash back to the year 2002 when the Dolphins had Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye. That year, Taylor had 18.5 sacks, Ogunleye chipped in with 9.5 sacks. This is a similar situation, it really is. Clowney having the benefit of possibly the most disruptive defensive player in the game hasn’t ever achieved double digits in sacks. BTW, Ogunleye only achieved double digit sacks once with CHI, and only once (10) in 2005. Granted, Watt hasn’t been able to stay healthy, but I’m loathe to give Clowney a huge contract when he’s never been a game changer. He’s young, he’s only 26, but where’s the beef? Understood he was injured his 1st season in 2014, and maybe had a hangover from that injury in 2015. Where’s the explosive stats after that? 24.5 sacks in 3 seasons. Sure, it’s better than what we have, but is it worthy of trading top talent away and then backing up a Brinks truck and paying him handsomely after too? I wouldn’t do it. 2015 Watt had 17.5 sacks and FIFTY QB hits. Clowney?4.5 sacks, 8 QB hits.

To me this more about getting a name than production, and as Naples mentioned, all too similar to acquiring Ndamukong Suh. I know we need help at DE, I’d rather run with the young guys who have shown some promise than really overpay twice to get Clowney, one in trade compensation and two having to pay some exorbitant contract for him over the next few years. I don’t think he’s worth it. Nothing wrong with kicking the tires, but don’t please don’t make the purchase!

I just really don’t like McTyer. He seems to be playing along fine, making generically good plays, but he just can’t clamp down in money time.

That was a perfect throw by Bridgewater, but McTyer gave the overtop free and clear, just running along behind the guy.

After weeks of speculation, the Miami Dolphins have finally announced their Week 1 quarterback.
    As per Jelani scott nfl.com

Following Thursday’s 16-13 road victory over the Saints, coach Brian Flores confirmed to reporters that Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Week 1 at home against the Ravens.

Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen, the 2018 10th overall pick, had been engaged in a tight back-and-forth battle throughout training camp but the 36-year-old Fitzpatrick has earned the starting nod over the 22-year-old Rosen, whom the team traded for on draft night.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

left tackles are hard to come by, there’s not too many of them walking the earth. Clowneys hold out may drive the price up and no one on this team should be un-tradeable.

i would think clowney will sign the tender soon to avoid losing a pay check, as soon as that happens we may see this go thru.

get their #1 and maybe a 2 or the next years 1…?

we would have 2 #1s and 3 #2s in the draft next year.

the thing is this team seems far from contending right now so why wouldn’t you pull the trigger on that deal?

  58. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Getting cut normally sucks, but the guys we let loose are then gonna have to either figure out how to get out of South Florida (flights should be real booked up and roads crammed) or wait out Darian.

Fitz must give them the best chance to win, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Fitz go the whole season as the starter and we carry 3 QBs on the roster, next year looks like Rosens the starter and Rudock his back-up.
Rudock looks damn good and he may get poached on the PS

  60. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m predicting (like a lot of other folks) that they ride Fitz into the week 5 bye and then give Rosen his first Dolphins start week after. And that would be the Fest.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i doubt there’s a timetable on Rosens shot, if fitz struggles they may go to rosen other than barring injury fitz is the man.

  61. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it looks as if Walton is the #3 RB as he’s had the most preseason action. Laird may be the 4th judging from last nights game in the order they were used, looks like Gaskin will not make the 53

    • D's avatar D says:

Gaskins has looked pretty good imo, he runs with purpose. I also think he is a sold receiver out of the backfield. Laird i really like too. They might try to PS one of the two, but to me Walton is the outside looking in guy, not those two.

      • D's avatar D says:

Im still not sure they dont trade Drake and keep Walton too. Drake is not someone i want to see traded but his talent makes him a worthwhile trade bait. I could really see that happening before the cuts.

  63. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

trying to find out if rosen is the man so we can draft tua next year is why i think most of you want rosen to start, i just don’t think it works that way.

this coach and the players are concerned about one thing, win on sunday. they do not have next years draft in mind and they probably already know if rosen is the future in miami.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its not why i see it that way, the reason i see it that way is i think that letting Rosen continue to grow a few weeks into the season is good for his development. I think its the smart move for a guy you feel is a franchise player.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh nm, you are talking to the start right aways, im not one of those. Im a sit behind until the time is right guy. I still think he comes in after a few games, i dont think they were so far apart in their readiness that it wouldnt take just a few games to get him ready.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you don’t change qbs midseason unless there’s a call for it, timing is essential and the difference in timing between the two will offset the offense by making the change.

you just don’t do that shit unless necessary and what would make that vital is either fitz imploding or getting hurt, other than that it’s fitz job. IMO

  64. D's avatar D says:

IMO Tunsil isnt going anywhere, but i will say that there is some logic in traging Tunsil with what looks like a really deep OT draft next year. I cant see giving up a proven commodity, and a guy with ELITE footwork (something thats rare in a lot of the OL prospects) for almost any amount. Still if they were to fleece a 1st and a 2nd, or a 1st and a next year 1st. That would be hard to pass up for almost anyone.

  65. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

D… i’m just going by the order in which the RBs have played during preseason. if you look at that you will see that other than ballage and drake walton has had the most activity and has been the first guy off the bench behind those two.
judging gaskin is difficult when he’s performing against the scrubbs, he has been the last guy in for a while due to lairds explosion.

not sure if walton gets suspended but if not he looks to be #3

    • D's avatar D says:

The only thing i can say about Walton making the cut is, is that he isn’t stash-able and the others are. I just dont think he has shown enough to really bring anything to the team that we dont have in the younger backs. If thats the case always go with younger so you can start bringing them up right. I think for Walton to stay, Drake has to be going somewhere else.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

you may be right, like i said i’m just reading the tea leaves of the actions by flores and so far walton has been the first guy behind the 2 locks.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – I think Rosen looks better than Fitz, he’s got more talent, certainly a lot more arm talent. I don’t see any advantage to having Fitz start and I don’t think he’s a winning QB either. Being on 8 teams tells a story, and the fact that he’s the only QB to start for 8 different teams tells another. He’s never been the answer at any stop, he’s wildly inconsistent, and I expect we’ll see much of the same here. He’s also been picked up by teams with poor QB situations, which inevitably leads to him starting. I wish they had more faith in Rosen. We’ll see how it ends up

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

evidently flores disagrees with you…..in fitz’s defense the teams that he’s played for have one thing in common, they suck! and the fact that he was even able to win the starting job on those teams should go to his credit.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The QB’s have sucked that he started ahead of too, so . . . How about finding out if the guy you just traded a 2nd RD pick for sucks or not also?

  68. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The way I see it is it’s the “easy” decision. Teams in all sports do that, they go with the veteran and say he’s more experienced blah blah blah. Hey, if the Mets left Pete Alonso off the roster this year, what would have happened there?

  69. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    https://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/20190830/schad-miami-dolphinsrsquo-brian-flores-makes-right-call-with-ryan-fitzpatrick-mdash-for-now?rssfeed=true

I think this makes a ton of sense on the Rosen sitting argument. Rosen did poorly last year and sitting for a few games can only get him more ready. The guy never read a LB before he got here so he needs a lot of practice. He’s extremely talented and I agree he will probably start after the break. I don’t think it’s terrible that Fitz faces that daunting first 4 at all. Our OL is still a mess and if Rosen is the answer? Then why get him hurt? People are slobbering on Luck but then want Rosen to face similar problems? Give him a few games and then cut him loose after the OL gels just a bit more.

Facing a probably terrible Skins team after 6 more weeks of practice sounds better than the grinder of Baltimore 6 weeks earlier.

Mike, if i were to come in that office of where you had your interview in an armani suit not knowing a damn thing about glasses and competed against you in your monkey suit who do you think would get the job?

So Mike is older than dirt, wears monkey suits…what else do we know about him?

    Bengals cut Lippett

There was an NT i kinda liked in the draft for us, late round prospect Stevie Tu’ikolovatu that got cut as well. Jorad Ta’amu cut by The Texans, some here liked him as a QB prospect.

    ORob,

What do ya think… kick the tires on Teez Tabor?

Im a UF homer, but he was great in College, but he may ned a positions swap. He would be one of those guys who could flex between S and CB.

Lol. A “report” claims players “would revolt” if Tunsil is traded? How, exactly, does that work? Refuse to play? Skip practices or meetings? Come on. I’ve never heard such a stupid comment in my life. Who on this offense even has enough skins on the wall to even claim something like that? Besides, if this FO makes decisions based on what players think of them or what they might do then they are rucked already and should just go away. What a bunch of crap.

    M13,
Interesting. Word up here was the Vikes were gonna cut Isidora.

    • D's avatar D says:

That may be the case, most the times trades like that are so they get first dibs instead of having to wait through waivers and then bid against others.

Danny Isadora, depth move, i dont think it changes anything about our starters.
