Dolphins walloped by Patriots in 43-0 shutout

I would like to think after seeing what QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has done for the Dolphins so far this season that the decision to go forward with Josh Rosen as the starter is going to happen as early as Game 3, away against the Cowboys. In very limited time yesterday, Rosen had 2 potential TD’s dropped in the same drive, one to Jakeem Grant and one to Preston Williams, both very catchable balls that were mishandled. Obviously when you lose 43-0, who starts at QB isn’t the only issue, but the notion that the veteran QB gives them a better chance to win on Sunday simply can’t be true.

I said it before the season that the Dolphins were putting a lot on Eric Rowe’s plate. If we had 2 poor CB’s, he wouldn’t see as much action as pass attempts would probably be divided more equally, but with Xavien Howard on the other side of the field, teams will always look to exploit the weak link. Rowe has struggled here as the starter, after being used sparingly in NE for the past 3 seasons. Rowe started only 12 total games for the Patriots, and it’s pretty clear why. Rowe is not up to the task, but our depth at CB just isn’t there, with Jomal Wiltz, Chris Lammons and Johnson Bademosi.

I look at our O-line and D-line and think “Who are these guys”? If I told you Jesse Davis would be our LT a month ago you’d surely laugh. If I told you veteran DT John Jenkins, formerly of the Saints, Seahawks and more recently the NY Giants would be our starting RDE in our 3-4 base you’d say “huh?”. I love Godchaux, glad to see he’s still with us, but surprising he’s at the nose instead of DE where Jenkins is. Jenkins is 330lbs, you’d think they would flip flop those 2. Rookie LG Michael Deiter has been OK, and veteran OC Dan Kilgore is doing his best. Tough task for Kilgore with Deiter on one side and newly acquired Danny Isidora on the other. Now, veteran J’Marcus Webb is our RT, not LT. Good job Naples, you called the Webb signing!

Then there’s the Minkah defection. Here’s Minkah’s strengths in his draft profile:

Strengths

  • Loves ball, lives ball
  • Extremely competitive play demeanor with a history of showing up big in the biggest games
  • Versatile chess piece with experience all over the field
  • Can step right in and cover the slot, play high safety or handle nickel linebacker responsibilities
  • Good feet with ability to transition backward and forward smoothly around the field
  • Gets to top chase speed quickly
  • Can become rangy safety
  • Able to stick a foot in ground and drive to the ball
  • Plays with “ball-man” vision of an off-ball defender in basketball
  • Has awareness from zone to make loads of plays
  • Has nine career interceptions and four pick-sixes
  • Has downhill mindset as a hitter
  • Plays off of blocks and into tackling position
  • Dangerous blitzer off the edge
  • Attacks line of scrimmage from high safety look in run support and welcomes physical challenges
  • Special teams ace with 22 career coverage tackles

So where the heck does this 2nd year player come off not only complaining about how he’s being used, but actually asking for a trade? Some here want to defend that? Clueless! We’re on Game #3, deal with it! To me, this may be the most disappointing development so far this season. The team invests a high 1st RD draft pick on this player and he has the audacity to request a trade in only his second season. Garbage!

It’s been nearly impossible to make any kind of evaluation on our running backs or even our WR’s. We’re -92 in just 2 games, so how can you evaluate anything? Our RB’s have a total of 23 carries for 52 yards, and Kalen Ballage has 5 yards on 9 carries. Ugh! Of course the O-line and also the level of competition we have played factors in (Ravens, Patriots). It doesn’t get any easier as we play the Dallas Cowboys in their house. Dak Prescott is playing out of his mind so far, Zeke is just getting back into the groove, and the defense which looks to be pretty good behind DeMarcus Lawrence and Leighton Vander Esch hasn’t hit it’s stride yet, but will have a much easier job against us. Our best hope is the Cowboys look past us as they play at New Orleans the following week (w/o Drew Brees).

Going forward, I want to see Josh Rosen in at QB. I can’t stomach the sight of Ryan Fitzpatrick leading this team any longer. If there was initially the thought that Ryan Fitzpatrick gives this team the best chance to win, that thought certainly has perished. Our QB alone won’t elevate our team to victory, but it looks clear to me that Josh Rosen is the more talented QB at this juncture, he can make the throws that Fitz can’t, so it’s time. I’d like to see J’Marcus Webb at LT and Jesse Davis at his more natural RT spot. He looks slow and overmatched at LT. He will still be slow and overmatched at RT, but at least his mechanics are more familiar there. We have to get some offense going, it’s been dreadful. We complained for years that scoring 17-19 points a game doesn’t cut it during the Tannehill era, well now we’re down to 5 PPG, and that must change NOW!

I want to see Chandler Cox in the backfield in some power formation and let’s make some noise! I think Rosen can give us a little spark, but all the other pieces around him have to work at a high level in order to be competitive. Gesicki is slowly coming around, he has 3 catches for 42 yards. If I told you after 2 games that no receiver or running back has not yet reached 100 total yards yet, would you believe it? Who’s closest? WR Preston Williams has 87 yards receiving. We just have to run the ball to open up the passing game. I saw Fitz play action fake about 20 times yesterday and defenders didn’t buy more than 2 of those. They were coming after him and frankly it looked silly. We need to have a few sustainable drives or our defense will be toast before we get to the BYE week. We need all hands on deck, and that includes the mutinous Minkah. C’mon son, you’re a better man than that, TEAM FIRST!!!!!

GO DOLPHINS!!

Start Rosen already so we will have a better idea whether he is a keeper or not.

If you count the Steelers now, there are 8 teams that will be looking for a QB in next years draft. If by some miracle (and IMO that’s what it will take to turn Rosen into a franchise QB) Rosen does turn out to be “the one” then we will have a treasure trove of picks PLUS the potential to trade down and get more high first round / second round picks.

Need to start him next week and jump start his growth.

It’s Mason Rudolph time for the Stealers*. He looked pretty darned good yesterday in his debut.

Thanks Days – If we’re going to wait until our O-line comes along we won’t be seeing Rosen at all this season. I have no idea what he is, but he looks more talented than Fitz, and we don’t really need to coddle him. I’m sure if you asked him would he rather wait till the O-line jells or start right now, he’d say start right now. I’m not worried about him getting injured, I want to see what the kid is made of, if he’s for real. If he gets hurt, then he’s probably too fragile to rely on anyway, right?

look how far fitzpatrick drops back out of the shotgun, how can you maintain any type of pocket with the qb doing this.

Talked about Jesse Davis’ struggles to get out of his stance last week. His late start causes him to grab a hold of a blitzer to put Miami behind the chains, and then this on 3rd down. pic.twitter.com/OIOAp8b4cF

Yeah thats the shit that Tanny did in his drops, Fitz moves forward in the pocket though once pressured, but he does drop too far back.

    ————————————————-
I have had them down as a team that not only might rival us for a top pick, but also would be interested in a QB. We can hope Rudolph plays well and this would maybe make them consider they have a guy already and then take a guy in a later round. We may be in the same situation, tbh. I dont think its a guarantee by any stretch that we will need a QB in the first. Some of Rosen’s throws are pure beauty. We had several really nice throws dropped by the receivers. Still, yes, we will have competition, every year is the same thing. Just play it out and then make the moves ya need to to get what ya want.

  14. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’d propose Minkah and Ryan (the Fitzpatricks) to the Stealers* for their 1st rounder and either another player or a 2nd rounder.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah i thought he really played well. I mean there are piecs ya move around and players you use like that and then there are ones that really shine in one spot, and you should rotate other people around them. IMO, leave Fitz there or trade him.

  16. D's avatar D says:

Best case scenario, Rosen is our guy, we have our guy on the team and we dont have to waste any draft capitol to move up. We could then take a top OT, hybrid DE/OLB or CB, and a CB/S in the second with an OG to round it out.

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I still think we should be keeping Minkah “Alcatraz” Fitzpatrick. We hold all the cards in this game.

  18. D's avatar D says:

To play along with the Fitz’s offer. How about Fitz’s, a 1st and Mark Barron. Barron is what they were trying to do with Minkah. He’s solid, can play the hybrid LB/S role well. He’s also on a cheap contract.

  19. D's avatar D says:

Dont know how interested they would be in giving up Ryan Switzer but id be interested in him as well. Would fit our offense pretty well.

  22. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    D,
I disagree with the premise that it does niether of us any good. We have him for this year, plus up to 3 more on a rookie contract. If he’s balling we potentially have another 2 years of franchise tags. But even just going with the rookie contract, what is Fitz going to do? Not play as well as he can? That does nothing but hurt his career. He’s not a 5 year established vet. He’s a 2nd year player with a lot of potential that still needs to establish his ability.

Additionally, if we turn it around next year or the year after and actually build something here, Fitz may grow up a little bit and realize the best thing that happened to him was to be ‘kept’ in Miami and be a part of what we built. If he’s still salty at the end of his contract then in year 5 we trade him.

It sure looks like he is going to be traded, so none of that is going to matter, but I think it’s fundamentally a bad move from our standpoint. Fitz and X could be the building blocks of an outstanding secondary and what kind of message does it send that if you make a little noise you get what you want?

If we get a 1st and a mid round pick or a player that isn’t just a wet towel, then all we’re doing is “potentially” breaking even IMO.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m not D, but I wanted to say that I agree with everything ya just said, Cav Kong. Unfortunately, it seems that ship has already sailed, being we already gave Minkah permission to seek a trade.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yep, it does look like it’s happening. And I understand you guys talking about the potential target and what we can get in return. I’m only giving my opinion on the way our FO is handling this. I think we are handling this situation the wrong way from a fundamental standpoint.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

100% agreed, man. That’s a lot of what I was talking about yesterday. This FO wasn’t prepared for said “mutiny” to occur after trading Tunsil, and they don’t know how to mitigate the fallout.

  23. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Are with Kong, keep Minkah just to spite him. He can’t not play well without hurting his brand. Let him walk at the end of his contract.

As for QB, I don’t think they will draft one early next year. Rosen will play this year (soon I hope) and next. They will trade the earliest first to someone who is in love with Tua or the flavor of the week for a pirate’s haul of picks. All eyes on Lawrence. Next draft will be about OL, DE, and CB. Throw in some skill positions for spice. Build the team, then get your QB.

Rosen has the physical and, I think, the mental skills to be a very good QB. However, I question his ability to be a leader. Maybe he will bloom after he takes the reins from Fitz, but he hasn’t really stepped up and led yet.

  24. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Chargers just lost another safety. Put them in the Minkah market.

    • D's avatar D says:

I had them there when Weddle went down. Worst case they would have needed some youth behind him because he is old as dirt. Still that does kind of up the stakes.

  25. D's avatar D says:

I think what your missing is, the idea of dead weight. I mean i get you guys are saying stick it to him make him grow up but you must not be dealing with Millennials much. You cant “grow” them. Look at how the NFL is being slung around by these kids right now. If he is showing his colors as a malcontent, thats just year after year of issues. He has the support of his mother, he has the support of all the other Millennials money grabbers and self indulgent giant children in the NFL. Yeah it will hurt his brand to play like shit, but it ultimately hurts us in the long run for him to stay here and drag others down with him. You are underestimating the impact of a guy like him, being in a negative place about his team and staying on it. If they cant work shit out with him, and him voluntarily pull the trade search, then he needs to go.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He played well this past week. I don’t think he can just pack it in, not when he’s on the field. Like I said in my last comment, maybe he has regrets for saying what he said. Just because there is a lot of interest in him doesn’t mean he’s going to be traded. I don’t buy that. I think we’re allowing them to look into it, and we’ll mull over offers, but if we get don’t the compensation we want, we’re not going to trade him for less. We completely have the upper hand and he knows it.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think everyone gets to make a mistake. One, or more depending on what that mistake is. I think Minkah can salvage his career here, assuming he wants to. I’m sure if he had a one on one with Coach Flo, he could rectify the situation here. I wonder if he regrets saying saying what he said or if he’s still on that path to GTFO. I can’t think of any good reason for him to have done what he did, it’s just way too early for that kind of behavior. If he really does want out, I only hope he goes to a worse situation for him, and we get a ransom back for him.

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This is going to be such a miserable year to experience. We’re looking at potentially a winless season combined with the potential for a perfect season from the Pets (that team is loaded on both sides of the ball). Our FO had better get the next draft right. If we strike out on our QB selection and majority of other picks next draft, it very well may drive me to insanity.

  34. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – We’ve got nothing but womp-womp so far. Hoping things get better. To me, despite what some others think, I think it starts with Rosen. No reason to bubble wrap him, we don’t even know what he is, and we don’t have a ton invested in him. We have more invested in Minkah!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The whole idea of saving Rosen until the line gets better, or the team gets better, or whatever the reason, to me gets thrown out the window when you keep putting him in games that are so out of reach the defense gets to pin their ears back and tee off on the QB. How does that help him?

Either start him, or sit him until next year and let him compete with our shiny newly drafted QB.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s a great point Kong. Preservation doesn’t seem to be in effect putting him at garbage time when we’re one dimensional and the defense can attack at will. Well said.

  37. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
Lol. I know, but I just don’t see any upside to starting him now. I doubt the results will be a whole lot different. This team is not gonna win many games regardless of who plays QB, so why risk him by playing him now? They’ve watched him practice and play in games. They already have an idea of who he is as a QB. He doesn’t need 14 games running a putrid offense to tell them much more. I’m usually for letting guys play but I see a lot more negatives than positives to putting him in there now. I’d wait at least a few more weeks.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Right now it looks like Tua will be the top pick
But anything can happen between now and April

Herbert has a lot of great qualities
I’m not sure people should right him off as the #1 overall

We also need to build an OL, fast if we draft a QB
We look in good shape to have as many as 2 high second rounders (bc the saints might have real issues)

Given deiter, and Davis and Kilgore (who if nothing more add depth)
I think we can draft a QB in the first, and use a couple of those early picks, including the second 1st rounder, on OL – maybe even trade up and get a top both LT

But it also wouldn’t be crazy to trade down and take the 2nd best QB, so we can get more picks to spend on OL…no one is going to want to hear it, but we don’t have to take Tua

  39. D's avatar D says:

Mike thats why i was saying that if he pulls out of looking for a trade, we move on with him and if not then we look to move him. He should be here if he wants to, but there is no reason to basically put him in prison to force him to grow up. That’s not going to turn out good, so yeah i hope he made a mistake, got frustrated and took it too far, but if he doesn’t rescind him looking into it, is that really a guy you think straightens out and gets with the program?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think for a number of reasons, even if he really does want out and he has no plans of going back on that, you keep him here because unless you get back what satisfies you, it’s not worth it to make the trade. We have ALL the leverage, he has his brand to protect, so he has no choice but to play well, or damage his brand. I wouldn’t give in just because I’m worried about him, and it sets a bad precedent to satisfy every whiny players demands.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its here already. Brown, Bell, OBJ, Landry, Zeke, looke like Barkley kinda started his ascent to there recently. You can fight it, and have it constantly destroy your team or you can move on and let other teams do the same and run those guys out of homes. You are going against the grain to try to bring in the right guys while a guy who is not your guy, is spreading discourse.

Again, im not saying kick him out, im saying work the issues out and let him choose to be here, because locking him into a prison of a contract isnt helping you at all. He definitely wont be a player for the future if you make him hate being there. Also, he might not deliberately hurt his brand, but when you are not where you want to be, sometimes that shit happens regardless of you giving the max effort you have left.

in 2008 we started 2-4 with the wildcat game upset in Foxdump as a W.
Then we won 4 straight before the patsies were awarded a revenge victory in Miami.
Then we won 5 more in a row to finish 11-5 and first in the division.

Both seasons were the first for the new coach.

    Rock,

3 Amigos is hilarious, but entirely silly. If you don’t go in for silly humor, then it certainly isn’t for you. But to say you’d rather watch those first two dolphins games back to back than 3 Amigos, well, that’s not silly, that’s just stupid. And as a very famous man once said (or is that infamous?), stupid is as stupid does. 😉

How could confusion arise as wisdom? According to the Mahamudra view, confusion arises as wisdom when we realize that everything we experience is the radiance of the mind’s own nature. And what is the nature of our mind? And how do we come to recognize that? -Ringu Tulku
