Dolphins walloped by Patriots in 43-0 shutout

I would like to think after seeing what QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has done for the Dolphins so far this season that the decision to go forward with Josh Rosen as the starter is going to happen as early as Game 3, away against the Cowboys. In very limited time yesterday, Rosen had 2 potential TD’s dropped in the same drive, one to Jakeem Grant and one to Preston Williams, both very catchable balls that were mishandled. Obviously when you lose 43-0, who starts at QB isn’t the only issue, but the notion that the veteran QB gives them a better chance to win on Sunday simply can’t be true.

I said it before the season that the Dolphins were putting a lot on Eric Rowe’s plate. If we had 2 poor CB’s, he wouldn’t see as much action as pass attempts would probably be divided more equally, but with Xavien Howard on the other side of the field, teams will always look to exploit the weak link. Rowe has struggled here as the starter, after being used sparingly in NE for the past 3 seasons. Rowe started only 12 total games for the Patriots, and it’s pretty clear why. Rowe is not up to the task, but our depth at CB just isn’t there, with Jomal Wiltz, Chris Lammons and Johnson Bademosi.

I look at our O-line and D-line and think “Who are these guys”? If I told you Jesse Davis would be our LT a month ago you’d surely laugh. If I told you veteran DT John Jenkins, formerly of the Saints, Seahawks and more recently the NY Giants would be our starting RDE in our 3-4 base you’d say “huh?”. I love Godchaux, glad to see he’s still with us, but surprising he’s at the nose instead of DE where Jenkins is. Jenkins is 330lbs, you’d think they would flip flop those 2. Rookie LG Michael Deiter has been OK, and veteran OC Dan Kilgore is doing his best. Tough task for Kilgore with Deiter on one side and newly acquired Danny Isidora on the other. Now, veteran J’Marcus Webb is our RT, not LT. Good job Naples, you called the Webb signing!

Then there’s the Minkah defection. Here’s Minkah’s strengths in his draft profile:

Strengths

  • Loves ball, lives ball
  • Extremely competitive play demeanor with a history of showing up big in the biggest games
  • Versatile chess piece with experience all over the field
  • Can step right in and cover the slot, play high safety or handle nickel linebacker responsibilities
  • Good feet with ability to transition backward and forward smoothly around the field
  • Gets to top chase speed quickly
  • Can become rangy safety
  • Able to stick a foot in ground and drive to the ball
  • Plays with “ball-man” vision of an off-ball defender in basketball
  • Has awareness from zone to make loads of plays
  • Has nine career interceptions and four pick-sixes
  • Has downhill mindset as a hitter
  • Plays off of blocks and into tackling position
  • Dangerous blitzer off the edge
  • Attacks line of scrimmage from high safety look in run support and welcomes physical challenges
  • Special teams ace with 22 career coverage tackles

So where the heck does this 2nd year player come off not only complaining about how he’s being used, but actually asking for a trade? Some here want to defend that? Clueless! We’re on Game #3, deal with it! To me, this may be the most disappointing development so far this season. The team invests a high 1st RD draft pick on this player and he has the audacity to request a trade in only his second season. Garbage!

It’s been nearly impossible to make any kind of evaluation on our running backs or even our WR’s. We’re -92 in just 2 games, so how can you evaluate anything? Our RB’s have a total of 23 carries for 52 yards, and Kalen Ballage has 5 yards on 9 carries. Ugh! Of course the O-line and also the level of competition we have played factors in (Ravens, Patriots). It doesn’t get any easier as we play the Dallas Cowboys in their house. Dak Prescott is playing out of his mind so far, Zeke is just getting back into the groove, and the defense which looks to be pretty good behind DeMarcus Lawrence and Leighton Vander Esch hasn’t hit it’s stride yet, but will have a much easier job against us. Our best hope is the Cowboys look past us as they play at New Orleans the following week (w/o Drew Brees).

Going forward, I want to see Josh Rosen in at QB. I can’t stomach the sight of Ryan Fitzpatrick leading this team any longer. If there was initially the thought that Ryan Fitzpatrick gives this team the best chance to win, that thought certainly has perished. Our QB alone won’t elevate our team to victory, but it looks clear to me that Josh Rosen is the more talented QB at this juncture, he can make the throws that Fitz can’t, so it’s time. I’d like to see J’Marcus Webb at LT and Jesse Davis at his more natural RT spot. He looks slow and overmatched at LT. He will still be slow and overmatched at RT, but at least his mechanics are more familiar there. We have to get some offense going, it’s been dreadful. We complained for years that scoring 17-19 points a game doesn’t cut it during the Tannehill era, well now we’re down to 5 PPG, and that must change NOW!

I want to see Chandler Cox in the backfield in some power formation and let’s make some noise! I think Rosen can give us a little spark, but all the other pieces around him have to work at a high level in order to be competitive. Gesicki is slowly coming around, he has 3 catches for 42 yards. If I told you after 2 games that no receiver or running back has not yet reached 100 total yards yet, would you believe it? Who’s closest? WR Preston Williams has 87 yards receiving. We just have to run the ball to open up the passing game. I saw Fitz play action fake about 20 times yesterday and defenders didn’t buy more than 2 of those. They were coming after him and frankly it looked silly. We need to have a few sustainable drives or our defense will be toast before we get to the BYE week. We need all hands on deck, and that includes the mutinous Minkah. C’mon son, you’re a better man than that, TEAM FIRST!!!!!

GO DOLPHINS!!

    FIRST THINGS FIRST–SUNDAY’S PREDICTION:
48-10 DALLAS. –AND THAT’s IF Rosen lasts the entire game. If “FITZ” has to play a significant portion of the contest, the margin of defeat will go UP, UP, UP!!!
    ———————————–
IF MIAMI SURRENDERS 48 points to the Cowboys, they will have given up exactly 150 points the first 3 games combined. The all time NFL record for most points given up in a season is 533 by the 1981 Colts. If Miami were to average giving up an average of 29.6 points per game the rest of the season, they would be at 535 points surrendered, and beat the all-time record by 2 points for points given up in a 16 game season. So much for “defensive improvement” this season. It’s left me wondering if we gave up 51 points per game this year WITH MINKAH, how many will we give up without him???
    ———————————-
WE’RE ALL HOPING that this barrell of draft picks we’ve obtained will turn us into a winner. But how many of the 70 plus draft picks we’ve had over the 10-year reign of Ross have proven to be big time winners??? –The obvious answer is “NOT ENOUGH” or we wouldn’t be in the huge hole we now occupy. I’m having a difficult time believeing that the very franchise that has done so poorly for a decade will, all of a sudden, pull a dozen or more winners out of the next 3 drafts. That’s why I’ve consistently favored new ownership as this franchise’s best hope of becoming competitive again.
    ———————————-
I WILL GIVE ROSS CREDIT for helping to stick our #1 adversary, the New York Jets, with another SURE LOSER AS HEAD COACH. I guess somebody in New York saw something most of us missed in Adam Gase (a really good coach?) during his 2 failed years in Miami. Anyway, the Jets are stuck with Gase, and I couldn’t be happier for them! He probably would NOT have gotten this job without has two years under Ross–so hats off to Mr. Ross!! I find it VERY INTERESTING that Gase’s Jets are 28 and 1/2 point underdogs to the Patriots this Sunday while the Fins are “just” 21 and 1/2 point dogs.
    ———————————-
I’ve read that a fellow New York real estate mogul has agreed to buy the Fins when Ross decides to sell the team. I’m fine with another New Yorker owning the team. He, like Ross, will certainly have the finances needed for the task of club ownership. And he’s GOT to have better football sense than “Little Stevie Blunder.” Now I know a new owner doesn’t guarantee progress. But, after we go 2-14, 1-15 or, God forbid, 0-16, what have we got to lose?? The sooner we get a new owner, the better. The only thing we have to fear is breaking the all-time NFL record for most point allowed in a season!

I watched a lot of Taco Charleton tape while he was at Michigan. Didn’t like him then (felt he never belonged as a 1st round Draft pick), and his NFL status/stats/tape is very telling. There’s nothing to see here with Taco… he’s another NFL bust.

  3. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

“Why did we get Rosen then?”

He’s a commodity, we got him for pennies on the dollar and if we play it right we’ll be able to unload him for dollars on the dollar. Rosen has hope attached to him. He’s not the answer for us. New FA aren’t going to come to Miami because Josh Rosen is our QB, they just aren’t. They’re going to come because we’ll have a highly touted early pick rookie who will be the face of the franchise. Rosen is either a good backup or good trade bait. We got him cheap. Don’t even play him just to keep hope alive.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

HEY, SON; Big Kudos to your UCF Knights for another outstanding season so far. I watched FAU play both Ohio State and UCF in back-to-back weeks. IMHO, UCF has the better team. In fact, I hope UCF and the Buckeyes meet in a big bowl game at the end of the season. And, unlike a few years ago, the Knights DO HAVE an outside shot at college football’s Final Four. OH how I’d love to see UCF blow Ohio State out of the ball park!!!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We won’t know that until he plays more. Then you can say we don’t see special but maybe a quality backup QB. Troy Aikman struggled as a rookie on a stripped down team too. Rosen is facing it twice in his first two seasons in the league.

I have no idea if Rosen can be a franchise QB that entails more than just a big arm, but Rosen has an elite arm, he can make every throw. If we could block a little better, I think we’ll see positive results and some TDs.

    —————-
I’m not confusing the two (Gary and Taco). Both are from Michigan, both are similar in size, both were played all over the Michigan Defense, and both were highly overrated, IMO.

Let’s see Mike, when did we get Webb? wasn’t it sept 7th? when did we get Isidora? Aug 30th. how long has Davis played LT this year? Isn’t Dieter a rookie?
you’ve got a whole new offensive line most of which was put together in the last two weeks and you want to get Rosen out there.
i’m not sure if that’s the reason he’s not playing but if it is it’s a damn good one.

I think Drake will be the next to go, i doubt he’s in miami’s plans for the future, he’s due a contract at the end of this year and i doubt we pay a RB so early in the transition, that may be the reason we’ve kept so many RBs on this team. trade him now and get something for him or let him walk in march.

  21. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sonny – What we paid for Rosen isn’t really the issue. FWIW, a 2nd RD pick, while a good deal for a possible 1st RD talent is good, but it’s a 2nd RD pick nonetheless, which does have a high value, even if it was a late 2nd RD pick. It would be nice to know if Rosen is a guy we can build around, or if he’s JAG. I know we have time, but let’s face it, this team is painful to watch right now, Rosen could make it a lot more interesting.

I think there are plenty of ways to deal with this. There is, to me, no right or wrong way, but I’m curious what you see as the upside of playing Rosen immediately. Is it more than you just don’t want to see Fitz anymore? What’s the benefit to Rosen and the team, in your mind? Again, not saying you’re wrong…just curious on the thought process.

And, Anyone who is “injured” or being held out of practice are possible trade bait, if you ask me.

  29. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Some one posted on twitter who would win between this Dolphins team and the 72 Dolphins

And when I say 72 Dolphins, I don’t mean the 72 Dolphins in their prime, I mean the 72 Dolphins now who are either senior citizens or dead

And there is a legit argument that a team of seniors and dead people would beat this Dolphin team

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – I just think the time where you can say the veteran (Fitzpatrick) gives us the best chance to win is over and done with. I don’t believe it for a second. On a personal note, these games are so unwatchable for me right now, changing it up to give Rosen a shot is the only reason I will tune in. The picks argument is a yes, but in order to get where you need to go you have to have one year where you talent grab. Having a lot of picks 2021 means we stack behind them other options and a really solid next an up scenario making the negotiations with the 2020 crew a lot easier. A lot of it will also depend on how successful we were during their time with the team, and we also will have 5th year options on at least the first rounders. Its not a bad strategy and as long as we keep the cap to sign the ones we want to keep, we will be fine.

Ramsey and Xaviar would probably be better
It pains me to say that
But those two would be for real
I don’t really want to give up those draft picks though

  74. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We won’t give two firsts for Ramsey but it’ll take one for sure

  75. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

FUCK THAT! Why would Ramsey want to come here anyway? Isn’t he trying to force his way out of Jax?

  76. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

JMO, but I want absolutely nothing to do with Jalen Ramsey. In his very short career, he’s become one of the game biggest $#!t talkers: he’s too cocky and he’s a team disruption.

No doubt his talent is off the charts, but do we really want to bring in somebody who isn’t team-first… after we JUST traded a few players who are aren’t team-first? That just doesn’t make sense to me. Again, JMO

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

I’ve always liked guys like him and you guys have always given me shit about it so bring on Ramsey. Our coach is great he can handle him. Right?

      Ask Parcell’s it’s about talent

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’ve always been a fan of Ramsey, all the way back to FSU. However, I think he’s entered a new stratosphere… not quite as high as AB, but he’s getting closer every year.

It’s ALL GOOD if you want him, man. But for me and my $.02, I’d advise against it.

PS: I rarely give you shit about who ya like, Bro! I’m actually one of your biggest supporters when it comes to your eye on talent! 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just remember it’s always about talent. The Pats bring in troubled players all the time. They just don’t keep them around for long if they don’t buy in. Teams do their research on players. Just go with the flow, bro. We tried to trade for Clowney and he didn’t want to come here so we moved on. The same with Ramsey.

You have to admit, Howard and Ramsey are a sick corner duo.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This season is all about implementing new systems and a culture, taking a good look at some young players, seeing who rises and who falls and then build on that. It’s actually a good thing in the big scheme of things even though it’s painful for us fans as we get made fun of for being so bad.

Grier and the coaches will have a much better idea who fits and who doesn’t moving forward. That will help determine who we target in FA and the draft. They need a core base to work off of.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Maybe so but we have to at least become competitive. Coaching needs to start showing up – quick.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. But it’s only week 3 and we’re still churning some positions. Everything is new with the exception of players who have proven they can play. This team has no history playing and winning together as currently constructed. Coaches and players are still trying to find their way.

0-2 out scored by 102-10 has something to say
Maybe not a win but at least a respectable showing

Or maybe a win why not
    Miami 17
    Dallas 14

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We were supposed to be blown out by the Bears last year and nobody predicted that kind of outcome. Trends don’t always stay the same and predictions are well… just that. 🙂

I would love nothing more then an upset win over Jerry’s boys in his building. We get to watch the NFL world make fun of them for a week. LOL

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They were both in the same draft and we chose Harris over Charlton who we also liked due to a higher grade. Now both of them in their 3rd seasons get to prove it to this coaching staff. Part of the process along with Nkemdiche when he’s ready.

  86. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I agree with ya, M13, say no to Ramsey. Ramsey will be a massive headache IMO. The idea of an X and Ramsey duo is pretty enticing, but I don’t think Ramsey is the type of guy we want to bring in with where we’re at in this process.

The Pets can bring in troubled, obnoxious, or disruptive players because they can get them to buy into the system of team above all. They can point to the results and say “buy into this, and you get a ring”. We haven’t earned that respect yet (quite the opposite at this point), so getting a me first payer to buy in is a much harder prospect.

Does anyone think Minkah would have whined his way out of New England if he was asked to do the exact same thing with the Pets he was asked to do with us? LOL, hell no.

If this goes down, I’ll root for to move to be a success of course, but I think it is unlikely to happen.

When we did the 1st NE fest in NYC at the Landmark bar or something like that, I remember Mike E looking at me and nodding look at NJ. He really was that ripped for a guy in his mid to late 40’s. Much cooler guy in person than his blog persona. The written word makes everyone look like an asshole at times. LOL
