Dolphins Win!! Defeat Jets 26-18 and are no longer at the bottom of the “tank”

Preston Williams did this twice yesterday, catching 2 TD passes from QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins finally put together a complete game as they held on at home to earn their first victory of the season. I’m sure Brian Flores enjoyed every second of it. The run game never got on track but that didn’t stop Fitzpatrick from using many different receivers to move the ball. It seems almost routine now that Fitzpatrick spreads the ball around and he hit 9 different Dolphins this past Sunday against the Jets. This was easily Fitzpatrick’s best effort as Dolphins QB. He finished the game completing 24 of 36 attempts for 288 yards and 3 TD’s and no interceptions. Pretty impressive, especially considering how woeful our run game was, 24 carries for 50 yards, so it was on Fitzpatrick to make things happen.

I know you all remember the scene last season where Adam Gase was sitting on the bench during a blowout loss all by his lonesome writing up plays on a clipboard or whiteboard. That same scene played itself out again on Sunday, except this time Gase was on the visiting sideline. Strange that it could occur so similarly twice. Gase has totally fallen out of favor (understandably) with Jets fans who are now calling for him to be fired. Not likely to happen as GM Joe Douglas was hand picked by none other than Gase himself, plus he has a 4 year contract the Jets would have to eat as well. He will most likely get another year with a draft that both he and Douglas engineer and then be judged by those results.

Mike Gesicki is improving and he had a big day against the AFC East rivals. Gesicki caught 6 passes for 95 yards and now has a respectable 21 receptions for 248 yards. One huge disappointment however is the fact that he still has no TD receptions. 6’5 250 and a huge wingspan and catch radius plus a 40″ vertical should have lead to at least a few TD’s, right?

The Dolphins defense had 3 sacks and also an INT for DB Jomal Wiltz. No, Charles Harris didn’t get one, it was rookie 1st RD pick Christian Wilkins notching his first sack. Nik Needham throttled Darnold on a delayed blitz where Darnold never saw Needham coming. Davon Godchaux also got his first sack of the season. The run defense was stout enough to contain Bell and Powell and keep that duo under 100 yards for a total of 81 yards.

It was great day in all, any time you beat the Jets, especially a Jets team with Adam Gase at the helm. Keep in mind Gase defeated the Jets twice last year as Dolphins HC but now lost to his former (depleted) squad. That’s gotta hurt! The Dolphins are now one of 3 teams that are 1-7, while the Redskins are 1-8 and the team that is at the bottom of the barrel but the top of the tank is now the Cincinnati Bengals who are 0-8. Odds are we won’t be the first pick, and you know what, that’s just fine with me!

GO DOLPHINS!!

Pre Season, a lot of you guys said goals for the season are to just show progress, show improvement over time, find some guys to form a core to build on, and find out if Rosen is the man.

We are making progress, we are improving (meaning our coaches can coach), and we are finding some players to build with. i am still not sure if we have decided Rosen is not the man. Maybe he is our “best backup in the league guy” our Earl Morrall as needed for our SB run with whoever turns out to be our Franchise QB, drafted in either 2020 or 2021.

So i’m not happy about the way we lost to Washington at all. But otherwise, the season’s been ok, because losing at home to the jests is anathema.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – I have no idea what we’ve found out about Rosen other than Fitzpatrick is better prepared. After the first 2 games Fitzpatrick played, I didn’t believe that was the case, and to be fair, Flores didn’t give Rosen a very long leash, he pulled the plug on us at the Redskins game and that was that. I hope they know what they’re doing. I think we may see Rosen again near the end of the season, maybe the last 2 or 3 games.

I personally have not given up on Rosen as our starter going forward.

To me he still has not been given a fair eval with quality OL and a full complement of skills players.

Gesicki is a yr 2 TE just waking up, Preston is an UDFA, RB has 2 2nd yr guys and 2 rooks, WR has a semi bust and 2 smurfs to go with UDFAs and whatever Hurns is.

I think Aaron Rodgers would have trouble with that corps, if his HC, OC, and OL coach were also all first yr guys, oh wait, anyone see the Packers bomb yesterday?

I think they pulled the plug on Rosen as the starter when the OL was so porous that he wasnt learning anything but to scramble for his life. There was no reason to keep a guy out there that you are trying to develop when there was no way to do that. Fitz doesnt need development and he knows how to handle situations like that better. I think it was a matter of that more so that they didnt like what they saw from Rosen and put Fitz back in and gave up on Rosen.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

With the sample we have so far…. no doubt in my mind that Fitz is better behind a bad O-line. But guess this year we won’t be able to figure out who is better behind a good one.

    Interesting for the Stat guys!

Check out how the catchable ball accuracy data is shaping up through 10 weeks. Burrow and Tua are destroying the field of the 2020 guys. The class as a whole takes care of the ball uncommonly well. Colors are quartiles (of 23) vs my database. Order is green, yellow, orange, red pic.twitter.com/gICiXssiA9

    ——————————————
Burrow is my top guy, i like Tua, i think he has a great bit of gamer in him, and he is very mobile, slippery, etc, BUT i think Burrow is the best overall fit for us. Ehlinger i like a lot too. Eason is a guy id take in the 2nd or later and develop. If right now the draft has 2 top 10 QB’s and they are Herbert and Tua, id be completely ok with us selecting a guy outside the top 10 taking a guy like Burrow or Ehlinger in the mid-late first or Eason or Love in the second. Fromm would be another guy to consider in the first, and i think he could run the offense we are trying to do, but imjust not a fan of his because i dont see a lot of big play ability.

He caught a pass along the sidelines, about the 10 and was out a few plays. Being out for the year means you’ve been marked as a star, and have been put on the shelf, too valuable to continue playing for current team.

Oh yeah now i remember. Damn. I didnt think it was too serious, though he did look like he was in pain on that play.

  50. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Head to head doesn’t matter in draft spot. I think strength of schedule is the next determining factor after record.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

not sure if the Bengals play a tougher schedule than us or not.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We play the Giants, Redskins, and Jets who all really really suck. That’s a good thing. We almost certainly play a weaker schedule than the Bengals which would give us the advantage in seeking the overall #1…as long as we lose to them, but I’m not sure that is going to happen.

    • D's avatar D says:

Ok looks like you are right, though if SoS winds up being a tie there are additional rules. We would win SoS right now because they played the tougher teams in the NFC which is offsetting us playing againt the Pats, but by the end of the year with us playing the Pats and Bills a second time, who knows how close it might be

      • D's avatar D says:

As of right now the W/L of our opponents is 34/31 and theirs is 43/23. The rest of our season is against teams that are currently 29/37 and their remining opponents are currently 28/37 so its going to be close lol.

  51. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cav — Bengals have zero wins and we are one of 4 teams with one. 3 other teams have two unless the Giants win tonight.

We’ll get a nice pick, but why not leave it at that?

    • D's avatar D says:

Its just statements of fact not preference. We were discussing the formula not so much that we think we should tank the season to make sure we get it.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“We’ll get a nice pick, but why not leave it at that?”

Because people on the board are talking about the possibilities of where we end up in the draft. Is that weird?

Do you want to talk about Real Housewives of Wherever instead? lol

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Didn’t say was weird at all. Just hoping people don’t get their expectations up and anything in the top 6 is pretty darn good.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’d much rather win a few than get the number one overall, but I don’t think the people that are thinking the other way are wrong. I get the thinking that if you’re going to suck, get the most out of it. I figure we’ll likely end up around 3 or 4.

I get the idea of not wanting to win just enough to fuck up the draft, but i have a hard time not wanting to win any game. Im competative and by nature im just not in it to lay up. Still i also dont feel like those that feel like this is a rebuild and we might as well set our self up with the best options for rebuild are wrong either. Still this season needs to be about accepting it for what it is, win or lose. We have ammunition to move around the draft if we need to, we have ammunition to puck up FA’s if we need to. It will work out like its going to, putting your own expectations on it only serves to frustrate.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When the season is over we’ll know where we stand and like you said it will be what it is. No point fretting over it.

Surely understand that, and we have gone through a whole bunch of it, but i think we will be ok doesn’t matter how it ends up. I doubt we are complaining by the time the draft is over next year. We might (as we always do) see better ways it could have been done but i dont think that by end of FA and draft we wont be happy with the additions to the team.

      • D's avatar D says:

Also keep in mind not everything has to be fixed this year, and thats why we have a bunch of picks lined up for next year too, so just gotta be patient.

There is also a story out there where Tua said if he’s not completely healthy at the end of the season he might stay in school another year. Don’t rebuild your team based on one unknown prospect. Let it play out and act accordingly.

Exactly! Winning is an important part of creating a new culture. Some pundits in NFL circles get what a tear it down rebuild approach is all about. Others do not and just repeat the same thing. The color commentator in yesterday’s game understood it.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yesterday one of the studio guys said during the game broadcast (paraphrasing) “well clearly the Dolphins put the tank on hold because they wanted to beat Gase”.

If you have a huge organizational drive to purposely tank games which will be dificult to implement, piss off fans, and cost the team a lot of money, and everyone is on board, you don’t ‘put it on hold’ to beat your former coach, smmfh.

Two different subjects. But I’m not rooting for draft positioning so I don’t pay attention to what other teams are doing. Also who’s the last #1 QB overall to win a Super Bowl?

We all know it’s not an exact science.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Niners still have two against the Seahawks, one at home against the Packers, as well as games on the road against the Saints and the Ravens, so I think we should be good.

        Bengals on the other hand….

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The last #1 overall QB to win a SB was Peyton Manning in 2016

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Or you could consider Carson Wentz 2 years ago even though he was injured at the time he was a big part of the Eagles season

  68. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, I’m not concerned with the franchise QB in 2020 if not available. Build a good team anyway. What if we end up with our franchise QB 2-3 years from now. It doesn’t mean we can’t be a fun, competitive team along the way.

We can’t look at this QB class and specifically Tua as this once in a lifetime thing. It’s not true unless you think only the team Tua is on will win the SB every year from that point on. Lots of the great QBs in the league now are going to be out of the league in the next few years. Father time comes for everyone. There are going to be lots of quality QBs who enter the draft in the next few years. It would also be great to add one when we’re a pretty damn good team. There isn’t only one way to do this.

C’mon, all U guys who thought (or HOPED) that GASE would be Ross’s FIRST successful coaching hire – – – aren’t U NOW VERY GLAD WE KICKED HIS ASS!!!!!!! Tim, I remember some very favorable comments you made about GARSE soon after he became Miami’s HC. Well, now that he MAY be fired after this season or next season, I’d like to know if Ross should again hire this bum if and when FLORES gets the boot??? OR would JOE PHILBIN be a better choice???

ANY DAY both the Jets and the Cheats LOSE is a TRULY GREAT DAY, INDEED. It’s too bad Preston William’s injury put a damper on the celebrations. I feel for the guy.

OK, we ship out Drake and, after 3 days of practice, he has well over 150 yards rushing and receiving for ARIZONA!!! His chosen replacement gets SUSPENDED for 4 games!!! – – Way to go, Grier, Flores and company!!! Oh, and lets NOT mention Minkah getting 3 picks his first 2 games in Pittsburgh, including a record 96 yard PICK-SIX!!! Guys are shipped-out, have career days with their new teams, and we’re left with draft picks that will be used by proven failures like Grier!!
    —————-
AND NO, I DO NOT want replays of “Ground Hog Day” featuring reruns of the Perfect Season. But replays of any one of our PLAYOFF VICTORIES under the leadership of previous owners would be a good start. Unfortunately, that will NEVER HAPPEN as long as Steve Ross and his “DOOFUS BRIGADE” are calling the shots. AND I SURE HOPE I’M WRONG!!!
    —————
FINALLY, ponder this. The Cleveland Browns, who went through 1-15 and 0-16 consecutive seasons while “Blowing Up the Roster,” are NOW, again, “IN THE HUNT” for a VERY high draft pick in Round 1 of the upcoming draft, with JUST 2 WINS going into the 2nd week end of NOVEMBER!! ALL THOSE HIGH DRAFT CHOICES and ALL THOSE FREE AGENT SIGNINGS have, so far, gotten them NOTHING. WHY!!! Because they’ve got the WRONG PEOPLE DOIN’ THE PICKIN’!!!

Will the CLEVELAND FIASCO be repeated in Miami over the next 2 seasons?? I’d rate the chances at 50-50 if Ross, Grier and Flores are still in their current positions. WE, TOO, LIKE CLEVELAND have the WRONG PEOPLE DOIN’ THE PICKIN. That said, even a blind squirrel
finds an occasional nut. So we COULD get very lucky in the draft. LUCK IS OUR BEST SHOT AT SUCCESS!!

KEN, Wasn’t Eli Manning taken in the first round?? Yes, he wasn’t the first overall pick. But SEVERAL Super Bowl QB’s have been picked in round 1. The bigger question for me is “Will we pick the best available O-Lineman with our 3rd pick in round 1??” Lousy O-Lines lead to beat-up quarterbacks.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But he wasn’t the last #1 overall to win

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The last two were Peyton and Eli. Elway in 98 before them. We’re talking #1 overall, not just 1st round. That’s 5 in the last 20 years between 3 QBs. It’s not a lock.

I don’t think the suspension of Walton is based on new conduct
He was arrested 3 times before we signed him
I think it’s just the nfls ruling now
I think the organization new it was coming
So no reason to cut him, it as expect3d

I think most of us would like to see the Dolphins focus on the OL this offseason
I think there is a chance we have 4 new OL by the time day 2 is done in the draft
But that includes 2 free agents

People will think it’s to pass on a QB
But we have 2 first toe under sin 2021 to move up
And if some of the prospects this year stay in school (and I have my eye on Eason and Love) to join Trevor Lawrence the 2021 class might be very good

And we can work on on OL and pass rush with those early picks this year

Wentz was the second overall pick behind Goff. Goff took his team to last years Super Bowl.
Eli was drafted number 1 overall by San Diego then traded to the Giants after the Giants drafted Rivers.

The past means nothing. We all know we gutted the roster to completely start over. I like what I’ve seen the last few weeks. Young players fighting for jobs. This current Dolphins team has the least amount of penalties for the least amount of yards in the NFL. Discipline is being established already.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD, what is your problem? Can anyone ever change their mind? Gase is coaching himself out of the league. Okay…, now what? The blow it up is not easy is it? You love to hold people to what they say but you’re never wrong. It’s not becoming.

I see the hypocrisy of the NFL, they bitch about tanking, then they wait until Walton is actually playing to suspend him.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I believe we are #4 right now if draft were today. Yet we get all the shit still…..

Cant wait for Flores and Grier to build this monster!

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I don’t think I’ve seen them bitch? Maybe I’m wrong but it’s been mostly talking heads at ESPN etc with agendas. I know the comp comittee may explore it but they are mandated if owners ask them to and why wouldn’t certain owners ask? The timing of the Walton suspension is very weird but our record won’t depend on a RB.

  85. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I think this is the best opportunity we will have for an elite QB. We have a massive number of draft picks, lots of money for FA, at least one top 10 pick, and a very, very good QB group if they come out. I can’t imagine most staying. That gives teams even more time to study their tendencies and their team’s. It’s also a higher chance of injury. Tua, Burrow, and Herbert are legit 1st rounders. They will all be top 10 picks and we need to take one of those 3. I’m not impressed by anything I;ve seen from the rest of the field. Fields and Lawrence look great but we have far fewer picks, less resources and will probably be far better in 2020 I see Cincy taking Tua at #1. I wouldn’t be surprised if we trade down from #3 to #6 and get our guy.

  86. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The Walton suspension was going to happen the minute he was signed
I don’t think the team was blindsided by it

  87. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Ok. Fins have the #3 pick as of now.
I hope they end up closer to 10.

That’s right. I don’t give a shit about having to have the #1. Let’s let Cleveland get it again. Who cares..

In 1 weekend we lost our most productive WR and RB. That’s a little overblown, but true. It certainly doesn’t help our team any. We were already a depleted roster, now it’s worse. Good thing is we know we have a legit WR for next season in Williams and I suspect we will pick up the option for DeVante Parker as well. No urgent need to draft a WR early.

In camp he was talking about his “summer body” and how he was going to keep it year round because he lives so close to the beach now (Florida) I think he has slipped a little on the Summer Body. LOL

He was listed as 315 at the combine and the Dolphin’s roster page still lists him as 315……I am guessing is has gained some.
