QB’s – Current depth chart and needs

Ryan Fitzpatrick

Josh Rosen

Jake Rudock

So there you have it. 15 year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick who is clearly the #1 choice as the starter at the moment, followed by 2 year veteran Josh Rosen who has played in all of 20 games starting 16 and doing so with a record of 3-13. Of course that record must be taken in context as he was playing for an awful team in Arizona for a HC that was fired after just one season. Jake Rudock was signed to a 1YR deal for $600K and he rounds out the depth chart.

Fitzpatrick had an uneven season, sitting behind Josh Rosen until the Fest game where Rosen was pulled and Fitzpatrick took over the reins for the rest of the season as the starter. He finished really strong, developing a strong relationship with WR DeVante Parker, who really grew in leaps in bound last season. I don’t want to ruin the upcoming WR article but the duo of Fitzpatrick and Parker from game #10-#16 totaled 39 receptions for 733 yards for a crazy 18.7 YPC and 5 TD’s. That’s a season for some guys right there. Mike Gesicki also had a very nice season and Fitzpatrick had a lot to do with that as well.

What to do with Josh Rosen? The best answer is probably nothing right now as his value couldn’t really be diminished any more than it already has so we just have to hope he has better things to show us. He needs to show a lot of improvement in camp and in the preseason and let him continue to build on that. There shouldn’t be any pressure for him regarding the starting job because if Ryan Fitzpatrick is healthy, he’s the QB, there is no uncertainty there. Of course if Rosen played out of his mind he may force a different outcome but no one really expects that to happen.

There are so many different ways to view the draft and the QB’S that may be available to us. My preference is to stay where we are and let the players fall as they will. I don’t want to trade multiple picks to get Burrow and I’d rather not trade multiple picks to get Tua, although the value to potentially get to #3 with Detroit shouldn’t cost more than our #5 and and our #39 pick. I could tolerate that, but the more I consider Justin Herbert or Jordan Love or even Jacob Eason or Jalen Hurts later on, as long as we have a solid foundation after free agency and the draft, I’d feel fine with any of those guys knowing none of them have the pressure to start this season. We can develop them and see what we’ve got and still be able to draft a QB next season providing we don’t trade away any future draft capital.

I’m excited for the draft, even if no one is there live, that doesn’t matter to me. All I care about is WHO we draft, not whether they hug the commissioner. It’s possible due to COVID-19 that free agency will be postponed, because part of the process is meeting team’s staffs and also checking out the neighborhoods, schools etc. If travel is limited or shut down completely, all that stuff can’t happen. I suppose they could do video conferencing but it can’t be the same as meeting a guy in person and of course seeing the sites around town and feeling the lifestyle of sunny Florida. I’m open to taking a QB early and I’m even more open to taking one later after we got some top OL and defensive players and maybe a RB. Next up is WR’s followed by TE’s.

GO DOLPHINS!!

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

So, Ogbah on basically a one year deal. Gives us a chance to see if he has or can fully recover from his torn pectoral. Torn pectorals can be a bitch to fully recover from. If he does, this kid is another potentially disruptive DLman who you can move around a little bit. It certainly looks like we are going for a rotational pass rush. Now, watch them move up in the draft and take Young. Lol

  25. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    Steve,
In this particular D I like that Ogbah can set a strong edge and can legitimately free up others when we run stunts and blitzes. He’s not a Cam Wake type of player, but this D requires physical versatile DE’s more so than the blur rush end. Him and Lawson really strengthen not only the DL, but will make our LB’s better.

    • D's avatar D says:

In this defense they are looking for hybrids, they want 3-4 DE/4-3 DT hybrids, 3-4 NT/4-3 DT prospects and 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB prospects. Ogbah will be the DE/DE hybrid, and he likely will be bulls-rushing to crash the pocket with an OLB pass-rushing on his side so the OLB has more direct line to the QB. Same for Taco, and Jenkins. Van Noy, Biegel, Van Ginkle, Equavon, will be the DE/OLBs, Baker, McMillian and Harris will flex in and out at LB. Our front 7 formations will be really fluid i think.

Like the Emmanuel Ogbah signing and this FA in general. Flores as a defensive coach has to have a good defense. Not saying we won’t draft any defense because we have the picks to draft a lot of positions. But stocking up on defense in FA is starting to shape the draft up for QB, OL and RB.

  37. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Of all the signings

Ogbah is a 2 year deal
Flowers and LAwson are 3 year deals

If they don’t work out over the next 2 years, we won’t be scrambling to trade them or eat some of their salary. These signings don’t hurt us long term

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s set up to compete now and transition in young players along the way. I think this defense takes a big step with the guys we added. We’re going to be an aggressive and unpredictable defense. Lots of different looks, stunts and blitzes with two corners who can play press man.

Miami Dolphins defensive FA signings continue with Emmanuel Ogbah
    by Brian Miller6m ago
The Miami Dolphins are continuing their defensive heavy free agency signing former Chiefs defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah.
Emmanuel Ogbah is joining the Miami Dolphins new-look defense as the Miami Dolphins have agreed to a contract with the free agent. He will join Bryon Jones and Kyle Van Noy as the new faces on the defensive side of the ball.

It looks as though the Dolphins are far from done though.

Dolphins’ extreme defensive makeover continues with addition of DE Emmanuel Ogbah https://t.co/Y6fwSU3wwQ

    — Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) March 17, 2020

Ogbah looked really well last year for the Chiefs. In fact, had he not been injured, he may have ended with a career year. Drafted in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, Ogbah spent three seasons with the Browns before joining K.C. last year. He played in only four games for the Chiefs but had three passes defensed, one forced fumble, and 5.5 sacks which is impressive given the number of games he appeared in.

  50. D's avatar D says:

My guess is Karras is going to be a guy we bring in at OC, or maybe Skura, we supposedly have been in on both. Skura has a RFA, but he was a UDFA, so its just about the matching rights that might be keeping us from making that move right now. I dunno if we are after an OT, i havent heard of any of the ones left being on our radar. There arent really a bunch of good ones left in FA though. Might be some after draft cuts, but by then we may have also filled those spots.

With this much work done in FA,
we have the draft capital to get the best TE in the draft
and a great top 3 RB and a great top 3 Safety.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m thinking he’s the blocking TE to push and/or replace Smythe.
But we still need a pass catching RAC seam buster type TE to give slow LBs fits and sub for Gesicki as needed.

I think in the offense we want to run, you need 4 TEs active or at least on the “53” or whatever the number is now.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You’re getting greedy, Naples. We didn’t have a RAC seam buster type TE until we drafted Gesicki. He had a slow start but really started to emerge as just that in the 2nd half of last year. Now you want two of them. LOL

The focus on defense may be a sign that’s where we want to get really good first. Brown may not even fall to #5. But if he is there and we haven’t traded up for a QB, or the QB we like isn’t there, he’d definitely be in the discussion.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      If we trade?

Dolphins were searching for a veteran RB to help what was the NFL’s worst rushing attack. They found one part of that answer in former Eagles RB Jordan Howard — a bruising back who has been productive when he’s healthy — on a two-year deal. Miami is still expected to target a RB in the first three rounds of the draft with J.K. Dobbins, Jonathan Taylor, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Zach Moss drawing strong early interest.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fitzmagic is so much more fun and / or a rookie is so much more fresh.
      Brady is stodgy and stale.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If you consider the afc west is very competitive. For brady to go to the charhers and have to play mahomes twice a year? With what the bolts have. It is very unlikely that he can win that division. Tampa has a tough division as well with brees and the saints. Miami in the east what better division is out there? He teams with flores who he already knows. The pats look to be rebuilding and buffalo is so.so . miami makes a lot of sense for brady if miami is intetested

Grugier-Hill, played in 10 games last year for the Eagles and started 6 of those. He is 25 years old and was a 6th roudn pick by the Patriots in 2016. He has played with Brian Flores before and spent time with him there in New England. During his time in the NFL he has 2 forced fumbles, 1 INT, and 98 total tackles, 23 of which came in 2019

The Wedge Scouting Report: Jordan Howard, RB

  75. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We are already a much better team and we haven’t drafted yet. Is it okay if I say we’re killing it, or does that make me an out of town homer? LOL

  76. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillip Rivers to the Colts on a one year deal.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A top defensive player is definitely in the mix in the draft, but we are setting this draft up via FA to go heavy at QB, OL and a young RB.

Thanks for posting those scouting reports!
Revisiting the comments section is priceless!

    LOL @ Steve on Ross.

Tim – I swear that Charlie Weis was practically crying this morning when he was talking with Bob Papa on the opening drive this morning discussing Tom Brady leaving the Patriots. It was pathetic!

On Floyd, how does a guy who’s playing 84% of the snaps on D have only 40 tackles and 3 sacks?
    ——————————————————–
I think he played hurt last year. Look at the rest of his seasons though.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kind of meh and I liked him as a prospect.

      • D's avatar D says:

Yeah if we could get him on a low risk signing id be on it, im not overly pushing the move i just know the guys has good talent, and he is kinda what we have been signing, young guys, some of which are either looking to bounce back or are bouncing back.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s pretty much on par with what he did the rest of his career.

  84. Ken's avatar Ken says:

So let me get this straight. We now have a defense and the best QB in the division is now Ryan Fitzpatrick?

    • D's avatar D says:

I lean more to Josh Allen is the best QB in the division,

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Allen definitely has more upside and I definitely would pick him as the guy to build around but if I wanted to win one game I would pick Fitz

      • D's avatar D says:

5 TD fitz would get it for ya, but 5 Int Fitz wouldnt lol, i love the guy, i wanted him here as soon as we got rid of Tanny, he was the guy even before Tanny was gone i was saying we could replace Tanny with, still that inconsistency is crazy. I mean if he was more consistent he’d probably be an all pro, potential HoF’er

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I know D I was actually very skeptical about Fitz because of his inconsistency but he was on fire the second half of the season. That Fitz could lead a contender

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, Floyd kind of reminds me of Charlton. Another opportunity. I thought Charlton responded well with us last year. He was active as a rotational player. The additions of Lawson and Ogbah push everyone else down but the depth and competition just went up. It’s not going to be easy to make this team as an edge guy this year whether more DE or more OLB. Only so many spots for those positions – what maybe 6?

  86. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Jordan Phillips, DT: Signing with the Cardinals on a three-year contract, per Rapoport.

  87. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

This is all the Jets have done so far. No one wants to play for Gase. LOL

    New York Jets
Biggest remaining needs: OL, edge rusher, CB

George Fant, T: Agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth 27.3 million with a max value of $30 million, per Rapoport.

Bah, one of my hopes for the TE room just signed for the Raiders. Witten would have been huge for that room imo.

  90. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    So Lions signed Chase Daniel,
so we prob do not need to worry about them drafting a QB in the first, right?

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The way we’re building this defense, Josh Allen is not going to run all over us anymore.
Whatever the formation is we use, the big scheme of our defense is 8 in the box and 2 press man corners and a single high safety. We know where they want to go with the ball because we’re making them do that. That’s what Belichick does. Force everything inside where there is more of a mosh and opportunities for mistakes. Outside isolated plays are easy. What if you make it not easy? 🙂

      Brilliant post.

      The Patriot Way.
Make your opponent sweat every yard..

I had a high school coach whose thing to say as he sent us on the floor was
“OK Men, make ’em hate basketball.”

His philosophy on defense was “pretend you are on offense and think of your favorite shot or play. Then think of your worst nightmare happening there. Be that nightmare.”

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks and good stuff! We already know Flores will fake punt, onside kick, send the kitchen sink, punter throws a TD to the kicker etc….. LOL

If Redskins get Cam which is likely they are not drafting a QB

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      True and true

This strange realigning of QBs is helping us out on draft day.
Indy might pick one, but maybe not so desperate now.

They might be sucking for Luck again.
