WR Corps suffer legitimate depth issues with 2 COVID-19 opt outs

Many of you here didn’t really value the services of one Allen Hurns, and maybe I’m on the side of overrating him, but Hurns was on target to be the starter opposite DeVante Parker at least into training camp. If Preston Williams proved he was healthy and battle ready then it’s possible Hurns slipped down the depth chart as he was replaced by the younger, more explosive Williams. IN any case, Hurns was a veteran receiver with AFC experience and one that thrived playing opposite a very talented receiver in Allen Robinson in Jacksonville. Never as much of a big play threat as Robinson, Hurns was a steady, reliable , professional possession receiver. Albert Wilson looked like he was almost all the way back last season, especially towards the end of the season. The last 3 games he caught 17 passes which is nearly half of his season’s production of 41 receptions. He had the lowest YPC average of his career at 8.1 and only one TD but the hip injury that cut his 2019 season short really took its toll on the receiver as he finally worked his way back. I do recall seeing a couple of plays at the end of the year where his explosiveness resembled the player of 2019 where he was turning nothing into something big routinely.

Before the opt outs, I felt like we had a very strong WR room with serious depth and a nice mix of youth and veterans. Parker is 27, Wilson 28 and Allen Hurns 28, along with young up and comers like Preston Williams (23), Gary Jennings (23), Isaiah Ford (24), Malcolm Perry (23) and Jakeem Grant who is now 27. If Preston Williams is ready he takes Hurns spot on the outside opposite Parker. Which receiver or receivers get to thrive in the slot? Jakeem Grant will be in the running as will Gary Jennings and 7th RD draftee Malcolm Perry. Grant has the speed and explosiveness Wilson had but not the size, Grant (5’6 171) is about 25 lbs lighter and doesn’t have the run power to break tackles like Wilson did. Gary Jennings is a little less speedy and explosive but has good size at 6’1 216. Jennings ran a 4.42 at the combine and put up 20 reps so he has some upper body strength. Malcolm Perry is closest size wise and elusiveness to Wilson but doesn’t have the top speed that Wilson had. Perry ran 4.63 40 at the combine. If you watch Perry play though, he always looks fast enough and is a very slippery runner. The Dolphins signed Colts WR Chester Rogers to a 1YR deal which deepens the depth a little. Rogers caught 53 passes in 2018, just 16 last year playing behind WR Zach Pascal.

The biggest concern I have about our WR’s, or really any unit on our team is the depth. If we’ve learned anything by watching MLB, NBA or NHL in 2020 in the year of COVID-19 is that players drop like flies. One second they’re on the team and the next they’re on COVID-19 protocol. Add in the usual NFL injuries, especially considering this year with a huge lack of practices and no preseason games and you will likely see how important good depth will be. I’d even question whether the league will be able to play a full season. We’re going to have to count on a bunch of our deeper depth players this season and I hope we get them all ready for action. When Chan Gailey was with the Jets in 2015-2016, he utilized Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker mostly, with a decent amount of passing to the RB’s Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. In 2016 Decker was gone after 3 games and replaced by Quincy Enunwa and the offense didn’t really feature a slot WR much. Robby Anderson provided the deep threat on the outside and again, the RB’s, now Matt Forte and Bilal Powell caught a bunch of passes. Jordan Howard isn’t much of a pass catcher but Matt Breida is a good receiver out of the backfield who was stifled by playing time in a 3 headed attack in SF with Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman and also CJ Beathard. Malcolm Perry may also get some use out of the backfield and Kalen Ballage was thought to be a good receiver although he didn’t get to show any of those skills here in MIA. Patrick Laird and Kenyan Drake caught the most passes at RB. In any case, one thing we’ll probably have to get used to in 2020 is NEXT MAN UP . . .

Was Albert Wilson still on the roster? I don’t see either of them as a major loss

Ain’t that a good feeling. You hear something turn on and it’s like Christmas.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Glad to hear Ken! Yes, Wilson was in line to be our starting 3rd WR or slot WR. He finally started to look healthy at the end of last season. We’ll see if it’s a loss or not, someone or someone(s) need to step up!

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Mike E — how different that would have read if your wrote it two weeks ago. Herns and Wilson were 2 of our top 5 WRs.

Q for you — is Grant really better suited to slot? With his size you’d think so but the coaches have put him out wide maybe even more so in the past. And while the speed is blazing, not as sure about the hands. Like him on the outside when it was either run deep or do the slant in front of the CB who was worried about the deep.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It depends on the coverage but if a LB or S tries to cover him they will have a hard time keeping up if he can get off the jam. He’s so damned quick and gets up to speed in a hurry. I mean that’s how we used Wilson, although in Gase’s offense it a 1000 different screens. Still, the idea of getting the ball to him closer to the LOS suits him best because I think his hands and tracking are below average and he’s not going to beat anyone on a 50/50 ball like Parker or Williams.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

For sure he might not be better than Parker or Williams given the height/hands thing. But actually thinking a guy like Perry is a more pure slot guy. Yet maybe Grant with his speed is better over all, but also thinking on a great team he’d be the guy you trot out when you go 3 wide. His speed scares folks.

Watching the Blues vs Stars and I’ve seen this game before. Blues start off slow in the 1st period take the lead on their 1st shot.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Stanger – If he could be a lesser version of Tyreek Hill that would be great. They throw the ball to him all over the field, especially when a play breaks down he gets open, but I’m not sure Grant has that kind of savvy. My thought was just try to get this kid the ball in space and it’s easier to get a little separation close to the LOS and then if he’s only single covered he may be able to quickly find some room to move. Tyreel is so much better at than Grant getting to the ball deep because his tracking skills are far superior. Hill is also 4″ taller than Grant, he just seems small.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He’s a always a move away from a TD, but not sure he is the 3rd and 5 guy. But maybe they scheme for his skills.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

No, right about that. I’d sooner see Gesicki in the slot on 3rd and 5 and have either Durham Smythe inline TE or Adam Shaheen, whomever proves better.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And with that TE on the line you can have Breida in the the backfield to either take the rush or catch the dump off. He’s got serious jets as well. Not sure how good his blocking is though.

So this week is the ramp up period of practice, and teams actually start full practice next week. We’ll have only 14 padded practices by the time we play our first game. I really wish they had approved at least 1 preseason game.

“The August 12-16 period will be the “gradual ramp-up period,” with players limited to a maximum of 3.5 hours on the field each day. The first practice will be a 90-minute session, then 15 minutes will be added each day, up to 120 minutes. The remaining time for each 3.5 hour limit will be conducted during a walk-through. Players can wear helmets and approved protective shirts on August 12 and 13, then helmets and shells in non-contact work on August 14 and 16. August 15th will be an off day.

Veterans and rookies will moves into the “contact integration period” on August 17, running through September 6. Padded practices area allowed to begin, and the CBA’s limits on contact work still apply. During this period, padded practices will begin at 90 minutes, with 15 minute increases each day, though no increase or decrease will follow an off day. Teams can have a maximum of 14 padded practices in the 21 days of the period.”

There’s probably going to be sloppy play from a bunch of teams, but I bet you can count on the teams who have continuity to be much better prepared. Flores and the coaches will have to do a masterful job to get all these new faces working together well with so little time.

  11. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Sheesh, Blues with 6 penalty kills in 2 periods. Way too many mistakes. Even with that, we actually look like the better team for the first time in 3 games, more because Dallas looks terrible though. 3rd period, 1 goal lead, I’m not confident.

My Cards have only played 5 games, the next closest is the Marlins with 10, and everyone else has played at 13-16. The series against the Pirates has been canceled, so that means no games for us until Thursday at the earliest. Assuming we pick up play then, we’ll be about 10-15 games behind everyone else. I don’t think they will be able to make all that up.

If the Cards end up missing a bunch more time, they should be disqualified from post season contention IMO. They created this mess for themselves by not following protocol and now missed games are stacking up.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s some crazy shit. I know they (MLB) did NOT expect to end up with a situation like this. I really don’t know how they fix this.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, I don’t know either. They can make up a few games with double headers, and if they can get their season total to within 5 or so of everyone else, then I think that can work, but I’m not sure they’ll be able to do that. I don’t think it’s fair to go by winning percentage for a team with 10-15 fewer games. That’s a quarter of this season.

This should be a valuable lesson for the NFL and their players. A chance to say ‘look what happened to them and their season because a few people were selfish and broke the rules.’

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Chester Rogers and Ricardo Louis both have a salary cap figure of 750K, so they don’t affect the cap at this time, and are just a couple of guys brought in monetarily, no risk, to be given a chance to earn a job. We may see a revolving door at WR 5 and 6 the first half of the season. Surely we have one and possibly 2 on the PS.

If you haven’t seen Roger’s highlights he’s a shifty WR with some quickness and flash ability. I’d say Grant will be given every opportunity to be the first slot WR, but if he can’t cut it Rogers can pick up the slack. Likely we’ll see multiple guys lined up there, even if someone establishes themselves. Week to week it may change based on opponent.

Rogers now makes Grant less of a have to perform player, because of the depth he brings.

We’ve got plenty of WR options now to get through the season barring a run of injuries.

  36. D's avatar D says:

Right now i cant see Rogers as anything but a camp body, i dont have any expectation for him or Ricardo Lewis, anymore than we can have for the young guys. I think its a lock for maybe 4 spots, i dont think 5-6 are anywhere close to decided. Id prefer it to be Kirk Merritt and Jennings, i think they are young with upside, and Matt Cole could go on the PS if he doesnt beat out Jennings. I am just not a fan if journeyman receivers.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I mostly agree on journeyman receivers, but the slot is different, I think lesser talents can excel there, or at least help contribute.

I think having a couple guys that have some experience in the NFL is important, takes a little time to acclimate, but I’m with you on the guys like Merritt that have a higher ceiling. It’s just safer to bring in Rogers and Louis in at the minimum, instead of depending on rookies. If the rookies look good in camp, you run with them, if not go with vets and let the rooks go to PS.

Basically these were insurance signings or CYA signings, something we haven’t seen before.

      • D's avatar D says:

Not political like that, being used in a political war. Its not that im saying politicans shouldnt be involved but they should actually be trying to do something instead of just trying to use it to either make themselves look good or the opponent look bad. Who cares about the political gain from this when people are dying and their lives are being completely trashed.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Hard to not agree with that. Just don’t think University Presidents are thinking about political message so much when it comes to the safety of their students and college sports. But for sure some politicians may use it like masks, but neither those nor college sports are political.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think unfortunately its all intertwined as the message we get and a lot of the data is being skewed on both sides, which leads to the universities and state governemnts basing their decisions off of the spun data. • D's avatar D says:

Yeah i agree they will hold out as long as possible, they are going to try to play, but they cant stay in there by themselves and those on the fence are gonna flip wihen those other two fall, and then its SEC by itself, and even they know thats an exercise in futility.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why can’t the SEC play against each other?

      • D's avatar D says:

They could but whats the point, i mean yeah you have football but there is no real excitement in just winning the SEC anymore. I mean there is an there isnt because whoever wins the SEC most likely wins it all, but the SEC wants to bring hime the big trophy and the SEC championship is not the big prize. I think the season would be really dull without the culmination of a BCS Championship and you cant really have that without at least most of the power 5 to make it legit.

Smart for the team, but the players union has to agree to it. If the choice is we’re going to cut you, but if you’d like we can designate you to this list, that might work. Also 3rd strings QBs don’t have much pull, so…

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, it definitely might be seen as detrimental to the player. A guy could argue he could be playing on another team instead of stuck in limbo on the COVID list, so there are some politics to be worked out.

Hopefully this possibility has already been addressed and accounted for in the 2020 CBA amendment, but with the lack of foresight we’ve seen time and again from these people maybe not.

    • D's avatar D says:

It might be splitting hairs but i think Drake was a cut runner and he could accelerate incredibly through the cuts. As far as speed maybe slightly faster, but you dont have to watch many plays with Drake getting loose to know his speed was elite as well. Again, we will see but Drake was a very capable back and with better OL, he could have and was very good with us. Through that last half of the season, without much of an OL, he was the best back in football, more yards and YPC than any other guy. I hope your right because Drake isnt our back any more and Breida is, but like Kong said, its a wait an see thing.

    6. Dolphins

    Micah Parsons
    LB, Penn State

Making it official and throwing his name in the hat of players who have opted out in order to train early for the draft, Parsons is arguably the cleanest defensive prospect in this class. A prototypical MIKE linebacker at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, he plays violent and displays plenty of athleticism and awareness.

While this isn’t an immediate need on the Dolphins roster, the right method should be to continue to take the best players on the board in order to stack talent. Raekwon McMillan has progressed every season to date, but he doesn’t possess the upside of Parsons. Pairing the former All-American alongside Jerome Baker gives the franchise one of the more athletic young duos across the league on the second level.

    9. Dolphins

    Jaylen Waddle
    WR, Alabama

Miami is once again in a position to continue to add talent to the roster. With there not being much value at their biggest positions of need, the team instead makes a luxury pick with the selection of Waddle. Providing Tua Tagovailoa with a familiar weapon, the Crimson Tide junior receiver provides lots of value to a team that enters the second season of their roster overhaul.

Essentially the fourth man on the totem pole as a sophomore, he now steps into a bigger role. Despite being down on the chain of command, he managed to shine when he was afforded opportunities. Waddle is a near-perfect complementary piece to a No. 1 receiver like DeVante Parker. Possessing unique run after catch ability, 401 of Waddle’s 552 receiving yards from a year ago came after the catch. He also already has three career touchdowns as a return specialist on his resume.

But, I would not be surprised that a part of their thought process was being sued by students if they aren’t allowed to opt out without any penalties. This isn’t a privately owned professional league who can do as they like. Our educational institutions should always…always….put student health and safety first. Whether you believe the pandemic is overblown or not, there’s no way colleges should feel comfortable making student athletes comply but are telling other students to stay away.
    ***
I do believe the situation is overblown somewhat….it’s what we do nowadays….nothing new. But, 170K+ dead and still climbing is the harsh reality. Overblown or not…that’s serious….and has to be taken that way by the people in charge. Most of the athletes will be unaffected…we think. They are young, healthy and low risk. But, all those people connected with sports and the many more they come into contact with either doing it or covering it or watching it, they may not be so lucky. They could bubble them, i mean have ya seen the facilities at colleges these days, especially the ones for the athletes, they are frigging sick decked out. Yeah, no parties, etc, but thats no different than you would have if they weren’t athletes. Classes are no different from being a regular student either, so i mean if they arent shutting down the schools completely, they wouldnt have to worry about anything else a normal student wouldnt, and if the other students can distance learn or whatever, so could the players at their facilities. If all schools do this, and all players are tested regularly, i dont think there would be a significant increase in risk.

The only thing you have to ask yourself is, is it all worth it? Thats a lot of protocols that have to be obeyed, a lot of constant monitoring, a lot of sacrifice. So, is it possible to play and have little to no additional risk. Certainly, is it feasible, maybe, is it worth it, i just dunno about that one. Like you said, its about money in the end, and if they want to spend a bunch to make even more, they can come up with a safe way to go about this, time to get it done is the only factor in question.

What health care legislation did the republican controlled house and senate pass between 2012 – 2018?

It’s cute to criticize the ACA
But it would be nice to offer an alternative

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Health care in the US was dreadful before Obama care
The reason the ACA passed to begin with was bc it was so bad

People have been filing for bankruptcy bc of astronomical medical bills pushed by supply and demand costs of medical treatment, there wasn’t pre existing conditions protection before Obamacare, and prices of prescriptions drugs are much higher than the rest of the world

Not to mention nearly 20% of the us population being uninsured and causing us all to be more likely to be subject to anything contagious

The American health care system is a travesty but most of our problems are related to money and not access

American health care just isn’t affordable to the middle class. It’s nearly impossible to purchase it individually on the market (before and after the aca), the costs of prescription drugs go up and up to match demand

Relying on your employers for health care when we are an employment at Will country isn’t very reliable at all not to mention that it leaves your HR dept with the power to negotaiate.

When you compare insurance plans, for instance of unions to insurance plans of corporations, most of the time the insurance plan of the union is far superior to that of the Corp., although the biggest the business the more bargaining power they have. But a midsize or small business doesn’t really hold much leverage to get its employees the best coverage in our system

I don’t know if more Canadians come here than the US bc the other way around. I’ve seen data that suggest that a lot more Americans go there than than them coming here, but you guys can look it up for yourself

But if you look at the entire world, much more Americans go abroad than people aboard coming here for medical tourism – and that is driven by costs most of the time

People coming here for treatment have $ to spend
But people leaving the US for medical treatment have less $

And that’s a realistic view of it
      It’s not Obama care
It’s what happens to any industry when the demand is endless and you have 3rd (Ins companies) and 4th parties (employers) negotiating the product delivered

That increases costs substantially. That’s just the way economics works.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fact Obamacare made premiums for health insurance skyrocket.

Sure there were problems before it that need to be addressed, but Obamacare sent our healthcare system into spiral we still haven’t recovered from.

To say the Republican led Congress couldn’t fix it when Obama was president is a joke. Under the first 2 years of Trump the reps had control, but the Mccains of Congress wouldn’t allow it.

The reason Obamacare passed was, because the dems wanted universal healthcare and put Obamacare through to fail, then wanted to act like knights in shining armour and slide thru universal healthcare. Pelosi on tape said she didn’t even read it, and would read it after it passed.

We have swampy people with lots of power in this country, that are responsible for our healthcare issues, for example the American Cancer Society regulating themselves, which keeps costs high and goes after alternative treatment methods. There’s also the scam between doctors and big pharma, and big pharma in general that have contributed to the skyrocketing costs.

To say anything good about Obamacare outside of those uninsured it helped is ridiculous.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Of course they are going up now
Trump is doing everything possible To sabotage the Aca

Repealing the individual mandate through the tax bill in 2017 cost revenue that led to funding

Then Trump cut billions of CSRs

        Click to access csr-payment-memo.pdf

When the administrations sets out to harm the ACA instead of looking out for the American people – costs are going to go up. If they sabotage the market place with policy that’s what happens

        But that’s fine – if there’s a plan

The elderly in the US are a growing population and the ACA won’t sustain itself if it’s left untouched (but republicans shouldn’t try to sabotage it either)

        But what’s the plan?

Republicans had control of both bodies of congress from 2011 through 2011 – and passed nothing as an alternative to address rising costs of health care

And none of that changed with trump – that’s not McCain’s fault, that’s bc there was no alternative plan

What is Trumps plan? You are more likely to catch a cricket singing opera than see Trump articulate an actual health care plan – his plan is nothing more than repeal the aca, which is nothing more than finger pointing

Pointing figures isn’t going to make health care better in the US – actually repealing the ACA and taking steps to hurt it, without a backup plan, just makes it worse

The swampiest persons in office is The President
In fact, in order to make his case about the ACA, he needs to set out to sabotage it – even though it costs Americans tons of money and coverage

It would be great if he criticized a policy and offered a better alternative

Instead Trump criticizes a policy, doesn’t offer an alternative and actively tries to hurt the policy he is criticizing

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And btw premiums will continue to go up without the ACA

Bc the cost of medical care continues to go up And baby boomers need more and more medical care as they get elderly

The inherit problems of an employer based system won’t go away by blaming Obamacare

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You can’t fix anything until UCA goes away. Trump has laid forth a plan, but I agree we aren’t going to see health care go down.
