2021 Position Outlook – Safety

The Miami Dolphins secondary was the strongest unit on the 2020 roster, but it wasn’t necessarily because of the play of our safeties. I believe Eric Rowe had a strong season, but the strength of the secondary was based on the excellent play of the two corners, Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Bobby McCain was good, not great, and the younger players showed some promise here and there but failed to make a clear case to be a starter going forward. Clayton Fejedelem who was a free agent pickup and a good one because Fejedelem is a special teams ace.

Young Brandon Jones proved to be a reliable tackler and that’s good, but didn’t show anything special as far as instincts in pass coverage. Jones was seconds in tackles in the secondary behind Eric Rowe with 62 tackles, but his 1 pass defensed and zero interceptions seem to imply he’s better in run support and bringing down receivers than he is in pass coverage. Jones still had a nice rookie season after being drafted in the 3rd RD (#70). Kavon Frazier who came over from Dallas in free agency played in 15 games but he was almost solely on special teams. Good Ole Bobby McCain had somewhat of a bounce back season, but I don’t feel like he did anything that made him indispensable for this coming season. His cap hit versus salary make him a possible cap casualty as they can save about $5.6M if they cut him. This can open up a potential spot for either Brandon Jones or potentially a draft pick or a free agent signing.

In the 2021 draft, S Trevon Moehrig from TCU may be the best prospect for us. Moehrig 6’2 202 has the size and length that we don’t have with Bobby Mac. A former WR and special teams guy Moehrig worked hard to become a very strong defensive player. He has good ball skills with 4 INT’s in his Sophomore year and adding another 2 in a shortened season last year. He possesses good instincts and good long range speed along with a quick burst, ideal for coverage in the NFL where it could be anything from a RB, WR or TE. Jevon Holland is another good safety prospect but he may be similar to Bobby Mac in that he also plays the slot well and may end up a better player at slot CB than safety. This is not a great safety class and it appears as if Moehrig is the cream of the crop.

In free agency, Justin Simmons heads the class. He’s almost certainly out of range as he will garner somewhere around $15M per, so he will not be a Miami Dolphin. Former NY Jet Marcus Maye is also a top FA, but again, he will be out of our range. Former Steeler Sean Davis is a free agent and I liked him in that draft, very explosive and agile, ran a 4.46 40, 3.97 short shuttle which is very fast and a 6.64 3 cone which is elite agility. In the NFL though, Davis has been meh, starting at SS in his first 3 seasons and coming up with 5 INT’s those 3 years. The drafting of Terrell Edmunds (Bills Tremaine Edmunds brother) and then the trade for MFFF no doubt buried him on the depth chart. He may be worth a risk to resurrect his career. I don’t feel like safety is a position where we have to do anything, so it’s possible we just leave well enough alone and let a guy like Brandon Jones develop.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Spotrac has already updated after the KVN release/trade: we’re now sitting at $37,190,422 under the cap. That is outrageously incredible.

One does not build a successful team by signing a bunch of stud FAs: we’ve learned that lesson before, and we saw how badly it destroyed the stej. Brian Flores knows this, too, coming from the AFC East rival Patsies*.

We’re creating space for perhaps ONE big name FA, with enough cap space to re-sign our own next season. I’m sorry, but it SCREAMS Deshaun Watson to me. I hope I’m wrong.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah it screams Watson, but only in the cap space available and I highly doubt they trade for him, and keep his current contract. I’m thinking of a restructure that gives us some cap savings this year.

That’s if you believe Houston will actually trade him and his 20m deadcap.

      Just say no, FU Watson

  2. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

But Haason has a potential going rate at just under a $1M of what KVN was making, and is not yet proven to be reliable/consistent. KVN is reliable/consistent.

Risk/reward of Haason Reddick becoming perhaps the 3rd most expensive man on our team per year? Dangerous proposition. These are the mistakes we’ve made in the past.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And REMEMBER… Haason feasted on the G-Men last year in a lucky mismatch game situation, where he had 5 sacks in one game.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And FURTHER remember what Steve wisely stated yesterday: JJ Watt was cut, so he could sign with whatever team. Haason doesn’t become a FA until the start of the new league year. Cardinals could still re-sign Haason.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Conclusion: we didn’t suddenly cut KVN to go after Haason Reddick… who may never become available to us. That would be outright foolishness. We’re making cap space for somebody else… not somebody who ‘might’ hit FA, like a Haason Reddick or a Bud Dupree…

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Whatever the FO has up their sleeve I bet none of the U75s have mentioned it yet

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you have a vet and his replacement fits more with the direction you want to go, you get rid of him, if it also saves cap space even better, but it doesn’t mean you made the transaction, because of money.

I think they went over the tape and feel AVG needs to be on the field more

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Van Ginkel is making under a mil next season. How could that not be a factor? Least one factor.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yet, we were $27M UNDER THE CAP with KVN with us this season. If I recall correctly, that had already ranked us in the top-5 teams under the cap. Was it really that necessary to cut KVN? Strange, is it not?

Screams to me that we’re creating even more cap space to land Deshaun Watson. I’m just following the money, nothing more.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Could be Watson cap room, but could also just be they thought Van Noy too pricey given the other option they have. Have a one-on-one at the same position as an option though as a first choice.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Being we’re rarely in our base 3-4 D, that would make ‘some’ sense, too. AVG is a rising star in this league and he should be seeing the field more often in nickel and dime sits.

See my post below… that could make sense, too.

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I heard one take on Twitter, and I’ll never claim another’s thought as my own. Dude said that perhaps we’ve vetted Micah Parsons and his situation, and we may be taking him @ R1P3. That would make sense to me, IF we’ve actually vetted Micah.

Just another thought to be added as to why we may have cut KVN.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Parsons is not going at #3, but in this draft the chances of going edge are very much increased if don’t get that in FA.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I guess my point is that we’re likely going to pay MORE via FA than it would have been to just keep KVN. Thus, we’re highly likely to take an EDGE guy fairly early in the Draft.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Problem: if we are in fact trying to land Deshaun Watson, much of our draft capital will be lost in exchange for him. And that’s exactly why I do NOT want to trade for Deshaun.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Conclusion: there was no reason to cut KVN other than to create more cap space. For who… for what?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If they are willing to pay the price for Watson then they will and then make it work. Highly doubt their off season moves will be with that in mind. Good chance he stays in Houston and best bet he does not end up here if he goes up for bid.

  6. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And M13 — they don’t need cap space. If Phins are willing to pony up to win the Watson sweepstakes, all they have to do is ask Watson to re-do his contract. Not for less money, just a different structure.

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Davon would love to come back and the Dolphins would like for him to come back. The question is can we make it work economically because the Dolphins have invested in three other defensive tackles recently. Davon is one of the most talented defensive tackles, I believe, and the Dolphins would have to be able to compensate him in that capacity. I’m not sure that they will, given the talent they have on the team. We’ll see if the Dolphins are able to step up and be competitive with other teams that may not have as much talent at the defensive tackle position.”
    — Drew Rosenhaus…. sounds like Davon Godchaux is gone.

    • D's avatar D says:

I figured he would be. Not that I don’t think he is pretty good but Wilkins, Davis and add a guy like Barmore and you are better and all three roughly the same price as it’s possible Godchaux gets in FA.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Good to see you D…. been absent for a bit. Where not with you is don’t think they will go big to replace. Maybe 4th or 5th round for next guy in.

  8. D's avatar D says:

Collins is a better prospect than Parsons. I don’t see the love for Parsons. He’s good but I don’t see him as worth 3 with Collins also available.

    ————–
Then why cut KVN? In case you hadn’t noticed, he quickly became a fan favorite, he’s a leader on and off the field, he’s been stellar on the field for us, he’s a Captain (in his first year with us), and even KVN himself was blindsided by this move. What’s more, he’s a favorite of Coach Flores.

It doesn’t make sense, as in, any way one looks at it. All it did was free-up even MORE cap space, while putting another hole in our Defense.

    Van Noy:

    – 61.6 overall grade
    – 811 snaps
    – 31 total pressures
    – 60.4 run d grade
    – 27 stops

    Van Ginkel:

    – 79.3 overall grade
    – 479 snaps
    – 19 total pressures
    – 77.6 run d grade
    – 22 stops

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s easier to get a higher grade, when you play less snaps, even so I think they wanted to get AVG on the field more

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

These U75s are just that. What kind of a schmuck writes that KVN had a 30m guarantee in his contract, when the dead money is only 4.25m?

Does anyone think he counted 25.75m against the 2020 cap?

The second 15m in guaranteed money was, if he was on the team a few days into the league year.

When it doesn’t make sense it isn’t true

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Found this, this morning to show how stupid some of these reporters really are.

      Dan Graziano
      @DanGrazianoESPN
A reminder about real NFL contract figures.

Van Noy signed last year for what was described as 4 years, $51M with $30M guaranteed.

In reality, $15M was fully guaranteed at signing. The other $15M was guaranteed only for injury.

Van Noy gets cut after one year, $15M.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yesterday I read this same thing about the 15m injury guarantee and it made sense, the rest of the reports saying 30m was guaranteed didn’t.

How was it possible for his dead money to be only 4.25m, if 30m really was guaranteed?

U75s and logic don’t mix well

  13. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I really, really hate to see KVN go. He was a favorite and he did go all in. It may be a business but it feels like a dirty business sometimes. I feel for the guy.

With that said, he didn’t have the best of years. The Cincy game was by far his best. He got half his sacks, half his tackles for loss, and a third of his QB hits. That’s a lot of his production in one game. He also completely disappeared the last three games of the season.

It still sucks but I have faith in them to find the next AVG.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m surprised with the release of Van Noy. Thought he’d be here at least another year. The vet who knows how to play multiple on defense and pass it onto the young players especially the LBs. I think re-signing Jerome Baker to a long term deal might be part of this. He had a very good year and is one of the fastest players on our defense, definitely the fastest front 7 player. He’s also a tackling machine.

Not sure this is about Watson or Haason etc. But we’ll see.

  15. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

LOL…KVN is released “while putting another hole in our Defense” (mf13ss quote), overachieving team by underwhelming talent, upgrades needed everywhere……

Coaching and culture change began the rebuild. Stay the course.

I hope we are a strong, solid, young team by the end of this year with few holes. Lol!

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I just wonder how the guys on the team react to this. I thought he was one of the good guys, team captain and leader. Cut a guy like that and players sometimes don’t take it well. I don’t think Haason Reddick is coming here. It seems like too much of a lateral move for the team, not an upgrade and the salary will be relatively close. Not to say I don’t like Reddick, I wanted him in that draft but it would be an odd move. Probably have our eye on a couple of guys in this draft that they like better. AVG played the weak side spot and Van Noy played the strong side. Van Ginkel also played a lot less snaps than Van Noy and put up similar production, but we still need to fill that spot, or hole as Krishna puts it. 🙂

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

A hole is like having a Colonblow at RT, or you could even say Needham at Nickel, or at C with Karras an FA.

RB we need a top line starter, but I wouldn’t call the guys we currently have a hole.

WR we could use another starting type guy, but again not a hole. With Wilson, Williams and Hurns back we have a good not great group. Injuries and covid opt out did this group in last year.

No holes on OL or TE.

DL we have 3 quality guys without Godchaux.

LB with KVN, Roberts and Biegel seemingly gone I’d say we have a hole here.

Secondary we have guys, but might want to upgrade at S.

I see C and LB as th only true holes, but I don’t think there’s a team in the league that has less. It’s the FA era, just the way it goes with expiring contracts.

I expect to see an LB taken in FA or resign Biegel, then one drafted by the 2nd round. At C I also expect we’ll have it taken care of in FA, likely a resign of Karras, unless they make a splash with Lindley.

37M over the cap, assuming 180m cap, which I don’t think will be the number says we’ll be players again this year.

League working on a new TV deal will likely bring up our cap number to 50m, if they can pull it off.

Bobby moving back to Nickel and Jones into starting S would go along way to tightening up the back end, but I don’t see that happening. Baby might even get cut.

I can’t believe we’re even talking about our holes, after the mess we’ve had on the field the prior 20 years.

  17. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Moving on from KVN has to be the only really head scratching move this regime has made so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. However, for a guy like KVN, it’s not about the stats. The guy is a catalyst. He instantly makes everyone on the team better by his presence. This does not seem like a step forward for the team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t think he does make everyone better. Most of the time it was where is he, then when the team was going good he’d make a play.

Ray Lewis made that play or speech to get his guys going

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m as shocked as anyone about KVN, but I can see what makes Flores a great coach, he doesn’t settle

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Kadarius Toney, just say no.

Watched a lot of Gator football, often without Pitts on the field. Their O looked bad early way too often, where was Tony, when he should’ve been the next man up?

Many games at some point he’d get it going, but it seemed far too often after the team got rolling and not as a result of him stepping up.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gregory Rousseau is an interesting guy, starting to think maybe he’s the guy at 18, instead of an LB.

The last 2 years we seemed to be plug and play at LB without missing a beat, maybe a magical trait of Flores, given how he likes to make his players better by keeping the O guessing.

Rousseau is that talent, that, when the game is on the line and everyone knows the O is going to pass he can pin his ears back and get after the QB. Like a Chris Jones or those 2 LBs for Tampa or even JPP.

I’d love to have Collins or Owusu at 18, but only if Rousseau is gone.

Any of the 3 will do, maybe Collins slides to 36, wouldn’t Rousseau and Collins be sweet at 18 and 36, after a WR or Penei with our 1st pick?

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s pretty hard to screw up this draft, with 4 picks in the top 2 rounds and lots of guys out there at our positions of want

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    DOLPHINS GET
    PICK 8
    PICK 39
    2022 FIRST ROUNDER
    2022 SECOND ROUNDER

    PANTHERS GET
    PICK 3

We selected Penei in this Fansided mock at 8. I’d be all in on this trade situation.

Don’t think it’s likely, but it’s easy to see something close to this happening and why a trade down to a needy team makes more sense, than staying at 3

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Then at 18 – Waddle, 28 Najee giving up 39, 50 and 114 to Saints, Collins at 36.

Don’t like the trade up, but taking these 4 players would be a dream draft.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t hate Tony, he could still pan out, just not before 50, but with all those other picks in the 2nd how can anyone complain?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Also taking Smith at 9 lessons the risk with Tony, because he wouldn’t have to produce right away

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

First I’m hearing of rumors about both Bobby and Rowe being cap casualties, but if it happens we’d save 11.6 and would need to add one in FA and/or draft.

I don’t like this big of a tweak, but if Flores makes the move he must have something in mind as a replacement, other than just hoping an S falls to us.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I keep reading Van Noy was a cap casualty, but I don’t agree, unless like was mentioned Watson was coming.

If they just wanted to go in another direction, then I don’t see the money being an issue, because what he was paid matches his play.

Replacing him with an FA, that is a playmaker, like Dupree makes sense, but again that’s not a cap casualty, it’s just going in a different direction.

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

AVG has the most to gain, and likely will be given the first crack at replacing KVN, but if we’ve learned anything from Flores, it’s that there will be competition for him. Biegel is looking more and more like a resign

  27. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So whether you like the Van Noy cut or not, it both creates a need and gives us money to fill it (or to fill another position and take an edge in the draft).

We just became players in FA. Before was thinking we had enough for a few middle to good signings…. now we could actually take a stud if willing to go light in other areas. My personal choice remains to grab a real good C, but we can sign a big name edge, WR or RB. All of a sudden say Aaron Jones is looking more likely.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The FO has us all guessing/speculating, and not sure how anyone can like or dislike the KVN release until they know what the reacement is or what they have up their sleeve.

Dupree would surely be an upgrade. He made Pitts D, when teamed with Watt a dynamic passrush. We saw how the Steelers crumbled, after he was out. It affected the entire team.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

A guy like Dupree becomes possible and so does pretty much everyone else you want to name. But only possible. Might just mean more guys instead of a player with biggest price tag.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

KVN isn’t a typical cap casualty, nor do I even believe he is one.

His play was close to his salary, so why release him? You’ve got a replacement in house? Maybe, but this leaves us thin at LB.

They must have some answer, but the reason why he’s being cut now is, because his 15m in guarantees become fully guaranteed 5 days into the league year.

Is it injury history? Doesn’t seem like it. Half his sacks in 1 game leaving only 3 in 15 games Doesn’t say consistency.

Maybe they feel they don’t need great LBs, just pretty hood ones.

Maybe his style of play, no quick twitch, doesn’t fit.

Maybe there’s several LBs in the draft, that can take his place, with more upside

  28. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I like Mac Jones too. I like Mac Jones…just my preference. Both of them are great quarterbacks, but I love Mac. He was a guy that I came in with from Day 1 when we were on the third team together and we worked our way up.”
    — Jaylen Waddle.on Tua or Mac Jones.

LOL…KVN is released “while putting another hole in our Defense” (mf13ss quote), overachieving team by underwhelming talent, upgrades needed everywhere……
    ————-
Not sure what this means, to be honest! I know there was some convo about ‘holes vs upgrades’… or something to that effect the other day.

The way I see it, cutting (or perhaps a trading) of KVN is an unnecessary act… being he’s a pro on-and-off the field. In that sense, yes, we created a void (or a “hole”) in terms of leadership/mentorship/Captainship… not to mention his play on the field: he was hurt for most of last year, but played through it, and changed several games to help us win.

I sometimes feel I’m taken the wrong way. I’ll try to do better in the future.

At the end of the day whatever moves we make; releases, FA signings and draft, it’s about the 2021 team on the field. This was the year I always felt would be the makeup of the team moving forward. We shall see.

You, sir, are the eternal optimist regarding our Phins! And IMO, there’s nothing wrong with that. 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not really optimistic, it’s more realistic. We as fans have to rely on who is running the team. This is a big year for Grier and Flores. We were 10-6 last year with a new influx of players. Where do we go from here? Not making the playoffs in 2021 would be a negative. There’s no other way around that. You don’t have 4-5 years anymore.

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy posted about Javonte Williams from NC. I like this guy as a RB. He’s reminds me of Chubb at 5-10 220. He’s hard to get down and has enough speed to gain big yards if you don’t get him down. Then Gaskin and Ahmed are nice complements. I like Najee Harris a lot but Williams is my next favorite. We need a bigger back.

Van Noy was sixth with 811, finishing with six sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, six pass deflections, 69 total tackles.

Van Ginkel had nearly half at 480 on defense, while leading Miami with 324 snaps on special teams. His defensive stats: 5.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, four pass deflections, 48 total tackles.

I mentioned basically the same thing yesterday about AVG. Still, AVG played weak side and KVN played strong side, so it’s not like AVG replaces KVN. We still have to find someone to replace him, but it does give more of an understanding about production and value.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The team never said AVG will replace him, the media assumed that. If we’ve learned anything it’s that we don’t know know anything about their plans until it happens.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Everything isn’t about stats, Flores has his own metrics, that he uses to evaluate players.

The U75s were quick to point out areas of concern after the Buffalo blowout, but I saw the Rams pressure the he’ll out of Allen and he was still able to win on the final drive. Overcoming 3rd and 20+ 3 times

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Right Steve – Media and some fans just jumped on that, but it’s not accurate. I’m sure they have plans to fill that spot now, whether it’s in FA or the draft.

Take either Wilson or Fields in the draft and keep Tua. Could take a season and evaluate which one they want as the QB of the future even if the rook never hits the field (they’ll see him in practice). Once we have chosen THE one can trade the other away. Won’t be for what we paid but what we get back will still be valuable.

Just think finding that QB important enough to spend some capital on it. And we hopefully won’t be this high up the draft again for a long while.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Not Fields. Can’t like those OSU QBs.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s what the Chargers did with Brees and Rivers. It isn’t a horrible idea, but I’m ready to challenge now, and taking a QB would basically remove our 1st pick in the draft. I don’t really like Wilson or Fields, so…

Steve, those were different scenarios with the proven vet QB and then the new guy. Tua is just coming off of his rookie season. It’s not the same.

Tim — but that Tua is not proven was sorta my point here. Wasn’t a great season. And Young, Rodgers and Rivers were unproven as rooks.

    ————–
Per Pro Football Talk, the Ravens are reportedly planning to introduce an overtime overhaul, a plan with the catchy name of “Spot and Choose.”

Spot and Choose. What does it mean? In short: one team picks where the ball’s spotted, and the other team gets to decide if it wants to play offense or defense. The coin flip would only determine which role each team plays — “Spot” or “Choose.”

Team A will pick a SPOT on the field — say, the offense’s 35-yard line. Team B would then get to CHOOSE whether to play offense and try to drive 65 yards for a touchdown OR play defense and hold Team A from driving those 65 yards.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The cheats in their heyday could say they want the ball spotted on the 10, and wouldn’t care, if you took the ball or played D, either way they have the advantage. The current way at least you have a 50 50 chance to win the coin toss.

  61. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not enough info, but it sounds too removed from the real game.

Is there only 1 possession? Or is that just how it starts?

I don’t like teams that have unstoppable Os proposing new rules that benefit them

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Think assume otherwise would be as current. Interesting twist, but my guess is teams would always pick btwn the 20 and 35. But maybe some high-powered O would go with the 10. That would be an in your face move.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not in your face, just a you can stop us move, so you might want to think about taking the ball.

  62. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The saying is when you don’t have a QB you’re all in on and you have two or or three, you don’t have one. It’s not that complicated.

Not sure what BLM has to do with anything. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Black lives only matter, when it’s white on black.

If you have 2 QBs you don’t have one, unless you do.

In both situations they want to choose when it applies, so at face value it means nothing

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay wasn’t looking for a debate about it. I didn’t make it up and I’ve heard it from multiple football people for years. I happen to agree with it.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve all heard it. If they added the word yet, then I’d agree with it.

If you have 2 QBs you don’t have one established yet, but that’s not how the saying went.

Us taking Wilson is not a bad idea, if you believe you must find a bona-fide franchise QB before worrying about everything else.

  63. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It makes zero sense to draft another 1st rd QB this year unless we’re intending to move on from Tua.

  64. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And that is a big NO to the new overly complicated weird OT rule proposal. I personally think the OT rules are fine the way they are.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think they suck as they are, 10 minute OT is a huge disadvantage to the team that kicks. You could say the same thing about the old rule.

Just change it to 15 minutes and leave the rest alone

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I wouldn’t be against moving it back to a full 15 minutes. I don’t see it as a huge disadvantage. You still get a chance to possess the ball if your D does its job, but I like the idea of an actual quarter instead of 10 minutes too.

  65. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m for trying out the reviewable roughing the passer call for a year, but I think it’ll be the same disaster as the PI review was. The call itself is too subjective and open for interpretation, so how can you have a consistent review on said call.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Any call will get better if they send it to NY, but then they can do it with all the calls and the games will just get longer.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not trying to be contrary, Stang lol, but I think the PI review was an unmitigated disaster, so I have to disagree with the any call will be better thing. I think some things need to be left as called on the field and we accept a human element.

  66. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

And the 2 QB saying is a generally applicable statement, it’s not intended to be an immutable law of physics. It’s like saying “defense wins championships”.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If you want to use loose statements as word, then yeah I agree.

In other words a loose statement is just words without meaning.

  70. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

So KVN has not yet been officially released, as we’re still actively trying to trade him. Not sure why the other 31 teams wouldn’t just wait for KVN to be released, and sign him to THEIR $$$ without giving up a draft pick(s). We’re (wisely) trying to get anything we can for KVN, before ultimately releasing him… but it’s probably not going to happen.

Now KVN has been put into ‘deep freeze’, where he can’t even pick his next team as a FA, being we’re trying to trade him. Why would we do that to one of our team captains, leaders, and while loved/respected by Coach Flores? I think we’re going to need every pick we can get our hands on after we trade for Deshaun Watson.

Maybe we’re playing poker, maybe we’ve overextended our intentions, perhaps it’s all just an illusion… but I truly feel it’s only a matter of time before we trade for Deshaun. I say BAD IDEA if that’s what we’re intending to do. I’m on the Tua bus, while keeping so many of our early picks for ourselves.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The KVN news is a bit skewed, because the team told him they were going to release him and he leaked it.

Teams will want to trade for him, so they won’t have get into a bidding war

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Interesting… that KVN ‘leaked it’ (that’s true!): hadn’t thought about it like that. That’s now making sense to me, that we’re playing poker. Good call, man.

  71. New Age's avatar New Age says:

KVN leaking the news is exactly why you never let a player decide things on your team. Watson would never pick the best HC, GM, players, etc for the team overall. He’d pick who he wants to play with, thinks helps him play best or look best. The player’s side is always selfish. The other side at least looks from the lens of what makes the team better so I can keep my job.

Players always talk about it being a business but they are a huge reason teams don’t tell them anything that is going on. They can’t and won’t keep their mouths shut. Mike Golic always talks about how Miami dumped his ass out of nowhere one day. That’s the best policy honestly. Team decisions are made by team leadership…not prima donna players.

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – That doesn’t make sense to me. KVN would prefer to be released so he can choose what team he goes to. If he’s traded, he could end up on a shitty team and he will have no control over that. I don’t understand what you’re saying. I think the odds of him getting traded once he leaked the story are so much more unlikely. Teams will just wait until he gets released. They’re not going to want to pay his contract as it is.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He was saying FU to the team, try to trade me after I leak that I’ll be released. Players aren’t always rational towards former team after being told they’ll be released.

Pros for releasing – revenge, he gets to pick his team, and maybe his salary will be bigger.

Cons – maybe salary goes down if no bidding war.

Pros for trade – keeps his salary.

      Cons – can’t pick team

I contacted the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum and they don’t do that sort of thing but referred me to the lady who recently appraised everything in their museum. I contacted her and she told me it would be $500 to appraise a single item. I thought that was a bit much.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    • the bad news is most appraisers/buyers will down play its worth

, its worth what a person will pay for it

see if anyone else is trying to sell the same item or similar,,, that might give you an idea on what to ask for it

Yeah, CA prices, no clue. Last house appraisal in TX was $350 about 5 years ago.

I’m thinking the memorabilia is priceless. Not my call though.

What’s that? You didn’t see the market drop on cartel news? It was all fake?

Probably didn’t affect you, but it will. Lmao.

  86. the late afternoon selloff was so bad, it almost triggered sec breakers
the shorters timed their dumps on Powells speech, and late afternoon was blood in the street prices.
they lost a good chuck of their shorted gains when they got squeezed at buying back higher prices this morning, lol they are manipulators and savages

  87. today is another one of those sell off the peaks , cost average the shorted dips all day, lmao, volatility is insane, just cant panic sell, ever.

hopefully next week the bulls take over

The letter is not for sale. There are 3 siblings and one wants to keep it. Therefore, that person needs to pay the other two their 1/3 of what it would go for today. I have seen other signed letters from John Wayne going for $1000 -$1800. This letter is uniquely related to a famous war movie and also signed by the director and producer. Just trying to do things right by the 3 siblings.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Seems like the other two siblings need to just let the other have it. I can’t imagine expecting monetary compensation for something I don’t want.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just give in, it’s not worth it. That 5 or 6 hundred doesn’t really matter.

Or set a price now and get your 3rd, then if it’s sold later maybe all 3 could share in that profit.

OD may be able to put you in touch with someone

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

BBM — cool item but definitely not worth getting it appraised unless actually want to sell. Keep in mind that what you see things listed for on the internet is the asking or pre-auction price. Would normally go for less. FIguring out the worth of a Wayne autograph should be easy for starters.

I would find the closest I could to it and set the price from that. Anyone has a problem with that I’d say, “we can put it up for bid btwn you 3.”

BBM, I agree with David. Just go the the priceless letter store and see what rate they are selling their September 12, 1949 letters from Republic Productions Company for.

Or ask a few people on the street. Someone is bound to be selling the same letter.

What if we took Pitts with our 1st pick? I’m in, but not at 3.
    ————————————–
I’m intrigued by the thought (but agree not at 3). Could see us go Gesicki and Pits in 2 TE regularly. Think would be a good set-up for Tua. Brings up visions of Gronk and Hernandez. Thing is who is gonna block if that’s almost a base? Gronk can block.

Looks like the Senate may have agreed on special unemployment benefits being extended until September. The $1.9 googolplex deal should be passing soon.

I’m hoping they increase the minimum wage to $75. My youngest daughter will be finishing college in the next few years, and I would love for her to start off making close to what they make at McDonalds.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I hate the thought of extending unemployment. Reason being is, around here, there are plenty of jobs/work to be found. Roofers are still backed up 3 months or more from the storms last year. My roofer said he went from one crew to hiring two other crews. However, my drug addict brother-in-law has lived the last year in motel rooms shooting up heroin and meth (he alternates several times a day). He has recently been experimenting mixing the date rape drug with meth and shooting that. This has been 100% on your tax dollar and mine. Says as long as he gets an unemployment check every two weeks he isn’t even going to look for a job. He has even overdosed 3 times in the last year on our dollar.

I was shocked to hear that him and his drug addict husband together are raking in over $4000 a month in unemployment/COVID relief right now.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

For some people the question becomes why go back to work when you can make more on unemployment?

And the Prez says we’re supposed to have enough vaccine to inoculate all adults by end of May, so why extend the special benefits until September?

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah, I don’t get it either. Things around Pensacola have been, more or less, back to normal since last fall. All the restaurants and bars have been open. I have seen some full to capacity.

Yeah, let’s just stop producing oil and importing it. Fuck the millions and millions of people who drive cars that aren’t electric. Good thinking . . .

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

      Who thought that?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I feel like you guys are missing the point

People aren’t buying crude oil bc people don’t need it like they did pre covid. Travel reduction is a big reason why

It doesn’t matter whether it’s produced domestically or not. You can’t sell it when the need isn’t there. And that’s why production has dropped and caused prices of crude oil to go up

It’s not just OPEC that is dropping production. It’s American companies.

      This is from last April
      https://www.reuters.com/article/us-global-oil-production-graphic-idUSKBN21Z26C

Obviously you guys aren’t going to accept OPECs historical vice grip on oil prices and historical actions. In fact I’m sure you won’t accept it – Today was the first time I’ve ever heard some one say some one else poked holes in what I said a week before a major American periodical published the identical argument.

So fine, you are unwilling to accept OPECs influence on the price of oil on the US. I think that’s plausible denial but I don’t want to waste my time on that anymore

American and Canadian companies also cut production for the same
Economic reasons opec is cutting production

Whether or not we import crude oil or not doesn’t affect whether there is some one to sell the crude oil to

A withdrawal of a license of a pipeline which hasn’t been under construction since 2015, and only issued in 2019 cannot affect a change of oil production in the US from 2020 to 2021 unless some one invests a time machine and brings the oil that would have been produced back to 2021.

US oil production did not drop bc of the Keystone pipeline which did not exist in 2020. US oil production has been reduced bc of demand.

I promise you, if you look hard enough, in 2018, you will find a notable conservative voice in Twitter acknowledging OPECs affect on the market in the US.

  95. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

sb7mvp, it would be that easy as one sister wants the letter and the other sister is willing to let her have it but it is the drug addict brother who says “Hell no, I want my share of what the letter is worth”. It is because of him, I have painstakingly been inventorying all their fathers belongings, putting it in a spreadsheet and mostly doing my own self-appraisal of everything by looking shit up on line. Luckily, his estate is small with no real estate and does not have to go through probate. This letter seems to be my only obstacle.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

There is no money involved either. His monthly checks went into a joint account with my wife and his money market account was also transferrable upon death to my wife. Their father removed the brother from his insurance policy last year because of all the shit he was pulling so my wife and her sister split that. He gave the money market to my wife since he has lived with us the last 6 years and never asked him for anything.

  96. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    BBMike

The appraisal price of $500 is generally a cost of administrating the estate.

You can always contact different appraisers and see if you do better. I don’t know the prices on those sort of things and what’s normal.
but if a museum referred you to her, she’s probably expensive. There might be people willing to do it for free in hopes you sell it to them

But if left with spending the $500. And it’s worthless. That money comes out of the estates funds, before it’s distributed to beneficiaries. This varies from state to state, but If the $500 was just passed to the beneficiaries from the estate, you guys are just no ping to be taxed on it anyway (with the exception of surviving spouse). It might be worth it to spend the $500 bc you are not quite throwing $500 dollars away, you would be throwing whatever the beneficiaries are left after taxes away.

And if that memorabilia is worth a lot isn’t that worth the $500 you spent?

    So my suggestion is
    * look for some one cheaper first
    * if they give you a high number for the value, hire the $500 lady

Whatever you are spending comes out of the estates assets anyway, and you won’t get to keep that all anyway, so it’s worth it to spend money in hopes of getting a professionals opinion. Maybe that $500 lady even will give you some kind of certificate which wil help that value at an auction

This isn’t legal advice, it’s just what I would do if I were you
Sometimes you got to spend money to make money

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Thanks Piggy, tremendous help! The appraisal lady does estates among other things but her main thing is appraising Rock and Roll memorabilia.

      —————————————–
That is what I had thought but that was her price for appraising just that letter. I am more intrigued than anything just to see. It’s not like it is going to be some big amount, maybe 2K at most. I am going to follow your suggestion. Thanks again!

He would know won’t win that and will probably come in lower. What’s he gonna do contest the estate? He very well may threaten that but have a feeling you would mention that it would delay him getting his money by months.
