Offseason questions linger – What will the Dolphins do?

March 11th, 2021. Spring is rapidly approaching, the weather is warming up, and so are the rumors. It’s too easy, the 2021 Miami Dolphins have a decent amount of cap space available, 9th in the NFL at just over #33M, but we’re also armed with a bunch of enticing draft picks, thanks to the Houston Texans. The Dolphins own picks #3, #18, #36 and #50, 4 picks in top 50 picks. We also have picks #81 (RD 3) and pick #124 (RD 4), and finally #207 (RD 6), 7 picks in all. There is also potential for us to trade back too, but I have no problem with focusing on quality rather than quantity. If there’s a player that can make a huge impact on our roster right now at #3, go get that player. Of course, we may trade this entire draft, Xavien Howard, Jerome Baker and Tua Tagovailoa to acquire the messiah, Deshaun Watson, so there’s that too. It’s just so easy to look at our team as the perfect trading partner for anyone, including the QB that in my mind doesn’t actually get traded. There’s also #1 on our roster who we prioritized with our #5 pick in last year’s draft. This is where we wanted to be, get our QB, and then have the ability to build the roster around that QB.

We definitely have holes to fill, especially with the surprise cut of LB Kyle Van Noy. We’re looking to upgrade and get younger too. I would expect a LB to be drafted by us, not necessarily with our first or even our 2nd, but it’s going to happen. We need a center unless we re-sign Ted Karras or look to FA once again to find one like we did last year. Corey Linsley is available and will cost similarly to re-signing Ted Karras. We may choose to draft a center and Creed Humphrey and Landon Dickerson are the 2 top centers in the draft. We also must upgrade our WR receiver corps and as the pictures I posted show, I would love to bring in former Lions WR Marvin Jones Jr. He’s such a solid, consistent receiver, and right now now we have none. I said it, ZERO. Oh this guy might become that, and this guy if he’s healthy could be that, but they haven’t and they might not. We need one professional receiver that suits up every game and produces and that’s why I like Jones. Jr. That wouldn’t stop us from drafting a stud WR and I believe we will, the more weapons the better.

Our linebacker corps just got thinner due to the release of Van Noy, and we only had thumper Elandon Roberts on a 1 year contract and he was injured very late in the season so he won’t be back. Vince Biegel is also a FA as is Kamu Grugier-Hill, leaving only Jerome Baker, Andrew Van Ginkel, Calvin Munson and Sam Eguaoven as our LB group. We need to find an impact player for that front 7 to pair with Jerome Baker who had his finest season as a Miami Dolphin last season.

We need an upgrade at RB, and rumors are flying that Aaron Jones and the Miami Dolphins are a match. I’m not as enthusiastic about this pairing as some people are. I think Jones was a nice piece in the GB offense, I don’t see him as the workhorse back we may need to lean on. To be fair, he’s a player not too unlike the Saints Alvin Kamara, smooth receiver who can run the ball in spots, but both of these guys aren’t pounders that wear the defense down, they’re more finesse backs. I think we have 2 guys on the roster already like that in Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. We need a true lead back and Jones is just barely a 1000 rusher and I think we should aim higher and pay less.

We could also use an upgrade at S, but it’s possible that last year’s 3rd RD pick Brandon Jones is given a larger role this year pairing with Eric Rowe, but good ole Bobby McCain looks like he could be facing down the guillotine himself. We can save about $6M if we cut him and I’ve always been a McCain advocate, but last year he had his chance and he didn’t really show an awful lot. With Nik Needham proving adequate in the slot and of course the presence of last year’s first RD pick Noah Igbinoghene, Mac faces some tough odds. What do you think we do???

  1. According to Spotrac.com, Golladay’s free-agent contract would likely be around $17-18 million per season.

Adding Golladay could provide Miami with a key piece to their offense in 2021, complimenting DeVante Parker on the opposite side of the field. The move would also open up more possibilities for the team in the Draft, especially with a trade back or a move to add an offensive lineman or linebacker early. He would be a perfect addition for the Dolphins, though he would not come cheaply, especially if the Giants are also in the running for his services.

I didn’t know anything about this guy. Looks like a FB blocker and a ST stud. From the Bengals website:

“Carter has been among Cincinnati’s most valuable special teams contributors since arriving as a college free agent in 2017 … Tied for team lead with seven special teams tackles in 2019 … Played just 8.7 percent of offensive snaps in 2019, but saw action on 68 percent of special teams snaps (third on team) … Used mostly as a blocker on offense, but did record two catches for 13 yards and a TD in 2019 … Scored a TD on his first career catch — an eight-yarder from Andy Dalton in Game 14 vs. New England … As a rookie in 2017, played in all 16 games and was key contributor on special teams, ranking second in snaps (63.1 percent) and third in tackles (nine) … Did not play in 2018, after suffering shoulder injury in preseason finale.”

I think Judon was their best signing.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

They had nothing at WR last year. They easily upgraded that position with two quality adds. They added a quality TE. They added a rotational player at DT. They added a quality CB. None of those players are top tier, but they are all good pieces, they may have overpaid for all of them, but they are easily a better team IMO. You can’t add game changers at every position.

When you add the players that sat out in 2020, I think they are easily in competition for a playoff spot this year.

  13. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

BPA, will probably be a need position for us. I call that a hole. We have 2-3 holes we might be able to fill in the 1st round. That would be amazing.

  14. a guy like Carter will be fortunate to make the final 53, he will have to overly impress in camp and preseason IMO

  15. the Dolphins remain in the mix for a top free agent receiver. They’ve pursued Lions receiver Kenny Golladay and had contact with the representation for Lions receiver Marvin Jones. Ju-Ju Smith Schuster and Curtis Samuel

    Miami Herald

  16. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Ugh, I really hope we don’t end up with JuJu

  17. i like Marvin Jones, but he is 30 years old, and the other choices are several years younger

We are not going to add anyone in their 30s to our roster in FA. Why?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because 30 isn’t old. You don’t want an entire team of 30+ but a few here and there is not a big deal. It’s not like your legs fall of at 30. LOL

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Yep, that is why I tend to believe we’re in the market to add a WR in FA (for a definite upgrade), as well as the draft (for a potential stud).

I still think it’s just as likely we add a 2nd tier guy like Jones as it is a high priced guy like Golladay.

  29. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

No, but how does that leave us going forward overall? We don’t need to overspend this year…not one fucking dime. There’s really no reason, imo.

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think too many fans get caught up with 30+ years old and what guys get paid. You’re not getting the better FAs at minimum wage. LOL

    • Do You think the Dolphins will sign Marvin Jones to a multi year contract?

that would surprise Me, but time will tell

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

My guess would be 3 years. But it’s always about guaranteed money and how does the player perform under that contract. It’s the same game every team plays.

      • he did play well last year, all 16 games, thats more than i can say about any of Miamis WR’s

so he WOULD be an upgrade over our raggedy anns and part time losers

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

In my mind it depends on what we are looking for /needing. I think we have a need for speed, which at 30 WRs lose a step.. they may get smarter, but speed tapers.. use the draft for the speed merchant .. JJSS has also not shown me he’s worth 13-17 M per.. he was dynamic as a #2 opposite AB, but as a # 1 he was underwhelming… M Jones has always been a grittier kind of WR , never a speed merchant but dependable and good hands .. I did not want Godwin either as he tends to drop a lot of “easy” catches.. Golladay or Samuel I think check both speed and hands

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

I never really believed the speculation about Golladay so that move would still surprise me, but obviously I think he would be a great pickup.

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You hear people say 60 is the new 40 but in football 30 is the new 50. LOL

  33. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So most of the FA pass rushers are off the board. Maybe we’re being frugal and looking to the draft where we have #3, #18, #36, #50, #81 and a 4th whatever # that ends up being after comp picks. We’re in good shape. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think us trading down from #3 is a real possibility for us to a team wanting to draft a QB or maybe even a Penei Sewell.

We have a heist pick. 🙂

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I agree.. we hold the key pick in this draft.. interesting to see what we net with it

  34. the fins should sign Golladay or Samuels, and draft Pitt and Waddle, and some later round WR as well

the fins WR cupboard has never been so bare as it was last season
here is where the fins WR total yards, ranked in the NFL< rank indeed!

    Parker, 39
    Grant, 130
    Williams, 158
    Ford, 164
    Bowden, 195
    Hollins, 216
    Callaway, 417
    Hurns, DNP
part time Wilson, DNP as always

other than Parker, none of the others should be considered a starting WR in the NFL

  35. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Williams could be considered as a starter , if he could stay healthy.. been a big if so far though

    • i like Williams for Depth, but the starters should be Parker1 A, Golladay1b, and Waddle . then Williams as the fourth IMO

with Pitts and Gesicki terrorizing the lb.s

that should keep defensive coordinators busy, lol

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To me the 2021 season is about Tua taking the next step, and other young players doing the same. Including the draft. Do you think Grier and Flores will be cool with 7-9 or 8-8 and no playoffs again? I don’t, I think they want to at the least get into the AFC Championship Game or really close to it.

From the 2019 season – worst team maybe ever, they might not win a game – to 5-11 and 5-4 in their last 9 games. Then in 2020 we go 10-6 with our destiny in our own hands. We got throttled by the Bills and then every team that couldn’t win did.

That is a learning experience for Grier and his staff, Flores and his, and the entire team of players. Don’t forget that. But we’re going to be a bit of a different team this year. The core is very young and even some standout players aren’t at that pinnacle 30#. 😉

  40. According to Overthecap’s Nick Korte, the Dolphins are positioned to get a fifth-round compensatory pick in the 2022 draft as a result of losing Fitzpatrick.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nickie doesn’t have anything better to do than tally up comp picks after every transaction?

Let’s wait until FA is over, I mean we are 13 months away from the draft

  41. Jests are signing wide receiver Corey Davis to a three-year, $37.5 million deal with $27 million guaranteed, Adam Schefter reported.

The Jets were also in on Kenny Golladay. If they’re no longer pursuing the Lions wideout, it could clear the way for the Dolphins to sign him.

  42. i couldnt be happier that Fitzpatrick, the human turnover machine is gone. its impossible to win anything of significance by losing turnover battles

he has his moments of glory, but over his career he bounces from team to team, turning the ball over, again and again. he is extremely sloppy with ball control, it seems to have little importance to him, and he never learned from it either

he has played 165 games in his career, and has 169 interceptions, and 83 fumbles, for a total of 252 turnovers.

165 games and 252 turnovers, this is why he never could hold down a starting position anywhere, and the Washiton football team will regret paying 10 million for turnovers IMO

    ill go with the latter

  47. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Tua needs reliable, trustworthy veterans at receiver to help his growth. We can sign two of those guys and still draft 2 wide receivers who will develop. I’m glad we aren’t going crazy in FA. Sounds like we are indeed staying the course. Of course, all bets are off if we throw away our picks and cap space on a trade for Watson. I’ll lose faith in this regime and start posting like one of the three stooges on this blog. lol

  49. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

If Tua comes out and lights up the scoreboard, that would be fantastic!
However we have to do something at the QB position, unless they have confidence in Ruddock, how can you go into next season solely relying on Tua after watching how he closed the season with the Broncos, Raiders & Bills. but you Tua lovers keep blowing his horn.

how can anyone be comfortable with that situation is beyond me.

And maybe less, if we trade down.

Which brings me to an interesting thought about an alternative to the draft value chart. What if you used the rookies cap hit to determine trade compensation?

When future years picks are involved you’d have to use some value from a round later per year, so a 2022 1st = 2021 second

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Fans look at rivals acquisitions as, that player isn’t great, so what’s the big deal?

Judon and the 2 TEs are a huge improvement

  60. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Ken/Steve, yeah, that makes sense (both comments).

I think Belicheat is in win now mode. He knows he only has a few years left, so he doesn’t appear to care about mortgaging the future. They have improved the roster, but are overpaying everyone, and he has to know he isn’t winning with Cam, nor will he win this year with any new QB they draft, so I’m not sure how those two ideas fit together.

  64. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Guys the Patriots roster has been coming to pieces for a few years now
Tom Brady was just the piece that made the whole thing crumble
It’s not hard to sign players to improve their roster
But that doesn’t necessarily mean wins on Sunday

They have a real hole they don’t know how to get out of
The common theme over the last two decades was Tom Brady

Spending a lot of money on a pass rusher who’s never had double digit sacks and a couple of tight ends isn’t going to take them there

They were bottom 5 in the nfl in offense last year
They were bottom 3 in passing offense with about 180 yards a game
Our offense, which none of us we’re happy with, averaged a full 50 yards per game more in the air then they did

Do any of these signings get them over that hill?

They have added two tight ends for a multiple tight end offense

This is still a team that of you score 21 points on, you can win the game

They just have better players at what they tried to achieve last year

The flaw is the design of the post Brady era

Patriots no longer have the QB that could either light up the defense for 400 yards or make the right throw on 3rd downs to set up winning field goals

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

And they are really doing anything to open up their offense either

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Agholor had the 2nd most yds per reception last year in the NFL. He takes the top off. They improved the receiving corps top to bottom, but I think it’s the TEs that are telling. I think they are going to be a power offense with Cam, and now they actually have some receivers. They were throwing to ball boys last year, lol.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

We all see they have a major problem at QB. Isn’t the whole argument against trading for Watson the concept that even if Tua isn’t our guy, you can still improve the roster.

Well that’s what the Pets have done, added good players. I think we all pretty much agree they aren’t going to the Super Bowl, but it’s insane to say they haven’t improved their roster, lol.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

To me their moves smack of desperation. They are paying relatively average guys elite money. It is the same thing we used to do

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Ken, I’m not disagreeing they are overpaying, and we know that’ll come back to bite them. They are simply a better team than they were last year. They’ve addressed major concerns like pass rush and receiving corps, and filled in holes. How much that translates to on the field, we’ll see, but I think it’s safe to say they will compete for a playoff spot unlike last year.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

They were competing for a playoff spot until late in the season last year. I expect they will be about the same this year

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

It’s pure spin to say they were competing for a playoff spot until late in the season. They were never serious playoff contenders.

They were 2-5, then managed to get to 6-6 before dropping out completely. Even at 6-6, they basically had to win out to even have a slight chance, and they dropped that next game.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

They were really competing for a playoff spot, they were just not eliminated yet

So you want us to believe, that by adding quality vets, at positions of need, isn’t going to result in more wins?

Even with some of the stats you posted, they still won 7 games, so it’s not too hard to imagine adding a few big improvement players will add some wins.

What if Darnold goes to SF, and they get Jimmy G back?

    ——————————
    * Entering the 2020 season, Pro Football Focus rated him the 14th best linebacker in football.

    * Between 2015 and 2019, McKinney’s 87.8 run defense grade, via PFF, ranked fifth among the 66 linebackers with 2,000 or more defensive snaps.

    * “McKinney bludgeons offensive guards, going through them to turn the hole into a massacre, and strangling running backs’ paths,” Pro Football Focus said.

    * Here’s the bad news: In his career, he has allowed 156 of 195 passes thrown in his coverage area to be caught for 1532 yards, equating to a 9.8 average per catch.

    * McKinney was a high school quarterback

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I posted a couple of nights ago he isn’t good in coverage, but you just need to use him properly.

He’s a quality Blitzer, so on passing downs you bring him or disguise the play in a way, that it puts him in a better position to succeed.

We did a lot of disguising the last 2 years, and it confused QBs a lot, which enabled inferior talent, especially in 2019, to succeed.

We weren’t #1 on 3rd down last year, because all of the guys on the field were great players

It’s pure spin to say they were competing for a playoff spot until late in the season. They were never serious playoff contenders.

They were 2-5, then managed to get to 6-6 before dropping out completely. Even at 6-6, they basically had to win out to even have a slight chance, and they dropped that next game.

  74. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

I completely agree with you that the Patriots moves smell of desperation

That’s exactly my point. They have set themselves up to be a team that gives it all to get to 9-7.

They aren’t going to be bad next year. But instead of realizing what wasn’t working for them last year – they are building on it.

They can’t move the ball downfield. They lack playmakers and they don’t have a good qb to make up for it.

Kong I appreciate your point about angalor, but it’s like us adding Kenny stills to take us to the promise land

Most of the Patriots moves resemble a team trying to be a physical team, which is fine, but they didn’t move the ball well last season and I don’t see this spending getting them there either

The national pundits are going to talk up the Patriots and they certainly improved their roster, but I’m looking at a team that won’t be able to beat the Bills, and if we can actually add some playmakers, they won’t beat us either

If when this off-season is done, we’ve added playmakers, our offseason was dedicated to improving one donor weaknesses and being able to keep up with the Bills, while the Patriots was off-season was decimated to improving what they did last year

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Out of curiosity, what moves do you think they should have made with their copious cap space? Blown the whole wad on 2 or 3 top tier signings?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think they should have scrapped the whole thing and moving into rebuild mode

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

What does that mean Piggy? They have to spend a certain amount of that cap, and they can’t make draft picks appear out of nowhere.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, so we agree on 95%, but that last 5% causes us the grief to have lots of posts back and forth…or have you come over to the dark side now and agree they’ll win more games to 9-7🤪

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Yeah, I almost posted something similar. I can see the Pets being 9-7, which is an improved team over last year, lol.

  75. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I agree with Piggy and Ken. Most of the players signed are good but none are elite. Every team should be making moves to improve but it’s a competition and no one knows who will do better yet. A ball control offense will help Cam but he’s still a limited QB. Pats are blowing their load just to compete with the big boys.

This would definitely be scary with Brady still there. It’s just not nearly as scary with Cam.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

What exactly are you agreeing with? Nobody is arguing the Pets signed elite players. You don’t think the Pets are a better team today than they were last year? Because that’s basically the disagreement.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

They are saying it’s not a very impressive haul for the money. Wouldn’t any team be better looking after that haul? Would it guarantee wins tho? No. They spent a ton on some good players. I’m not sure it will get them over the hump. So, not that impressed.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierGrodd says:

Like Steve said, we’re basically saying the same thing. We aren’t arguing the Pets are now top of the league, or they spent their money really wisely. We simply said they got better. They added solid players at positions of need.

        Did they overpay? Yes
Did they get all the best players on the market? No
Are they going to win a SB? No
Is their roster better today than it was last year? Yes

Like every other argument on the board, things get slightly twisted around, and now we’re arguing semantics, lol.

Wilkins, Raekwon Davis and Sieler. Doubt they go with more than 4 DTs on the active game day roster. 4th could be one of them, a relatively cheap FA or even a 4th/5th draft choice.
    —————-
I go with Ourlads.com, and it’s about time I give them up. They have Sieler listed as a 3-4 DE (which is true, but…), he’s also a 4-3 DT, as you correctly stated above. In other words, I didn’t even think of Sieler as a 4-3 DT, the way Ourlads has him listed.
